I'm starting to emerge from my mental fog but the feeling of 'what now?' isn't gone.

We've lost both the House and the Senate. This basically means that unless there are 10 GOP Reps and/or 7 GOP Senators who have a moral compass, we are screwed. Whatever Trump wants will be rubber stamped, unless it requires a Supermajority, which most legislation does not. The most we can do is try to slow things down with appeals.

It's rumored that Trump will pressure Justices Thomas, Alito, and Sotomayor (all 70+) to retire so he can appoint younger conservative justices, thus determining the course of decisions for decades. Sotomayor won't retire, of course, but I'd say that there's a good chance Thomas and Alito will, although not until close to the next election (2028). And speaking of that, if 'Vance 2028' doesn't strike fear into your heart, I don't know what does.

Here's the thing. The Democratic party has sort of painted itself into a corner. Now, I'm not preaching 'yes' or 'no' on gender politics and I don't want to start (or re-start) a big 'thing' on our thread, but it's pretty obvious to me that it's an extremely divisive subject within the party and apparently within the Dem electorate. The Party is going to have to decide if or to what degree they are going to compromise or temper their stand in order to regain the votes of those who either believe that you cannot change your gender or if you do, that you should be denied/restricted from certain areas and activities. Do they compromise or do they stand firm knowing that either stand will gain and lose them votes? It's rather a 'Sophie's choice' scenario, isn't it?

The next four years is going to be terrible. The four, possibly eight, years after that will be even worse if the Dems don't make some really hard decisions. Because even if we find the perfect candidate, the party's stand on social issues may keep them from being elected.

Eeyore is now returning to the stable to 'doom and gloom' more privately.

@AcrossthePond55
If it helps at all, focus on 2026
because there are a LOT of Senate and Governorships and the whole house

It will not stop the orange one
but it gives a good point of focus for the Democrat organisers
getting back to talking WITH voters not AT them

One of the Trump grandkids was tweeting family photos with Musk in. One was of the whole family where Musk seemed to have replaced Melania.

I saw that Stephen King (author) had called Elon Musk the new First Lady - so probably in response to that picture.

Plus Russian state TV announced Trump's victory and apparently accompanied it with a montage of Melania's nude photos! Sounds like a bit of (not so subtle) blackmail to me... Putin saying if I'm happy to show everyone multiple pictures of your wife in nude, semi-pornographic poses then be aware I've still got all the comprising stuff on you (Trump) too"...?

@lifeturnsonadime there is an interesting panel discussion on bbc I player re why trump won. They discussed this trans issue and Democrats seemingly turning a blind eye to it however then championing women's rights.

Jukeboxjive · 11/11/2024 14:44

@Spandauer musk replaced Melania😂 stranger things have happened at sea

borntobequiet · 11/11/2024 15:19

Placemarking, for old time’s sake, saddened but not particularly surprised.
Luxury beliefs don’t win elections in troubled times, and neither does pissing off millions of soccer/swimming/athletics moms and dads of enthusiastic and ambitious girls (other sports are available).
It’s a shame, because the Biden presidency did well in many ways.

Elle771 · 11/11/2024 15:27

Place marking after a week of news blackout as couldn't take all the doom!

Relived not to live in the US but felt heavily invested from across the pond so gutted with the result:(

On a side but not unrelated note... how did I only just realise that Donald Trump Jn is engaged to Gavin Newsoms ex wife?! Am I the only one who finds that totally bizarre/small world/wtf?!

BestIsWest · 11/11/2024 15:32

No I didn’t either @Elle771. That seems strange to me.

It’s not that strange. She is very accomplished in her own right and after her divorce she was a long time panelist on Fox News. The Trumps are pally with most of the Fox News contributors so they would be in the same circle.

Thank you, do you know what it was called?

No, you aren't mixing up. Kimberly Guilfoyle was married to Gavin 2001-2006.

AOC asked her followers who split their ballots either for Trump/her or Trump/downballot Dem to explain why and posted the replies:

I'm not a big AOC fan but well done to her to start the dialogue.

New Hampshire is another routinely split state.

Which means I have to share this absolutely jaw-dropping photo that is seared into my brain: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/gavin-newsom-kimberly-guilfoyle-rug-photo.html

Copperas · 11/11/2024 23:03

There was an interesting article in the Guardian or Observer which pointed out that very many people are/feel much worse off now than four years ago because of the withdrawal of government support for families which Biden wanted to keep. But I can’t find it again!

Copperas · 12/11/2024 05:46

It was the Covid support which made a significant difference to many families. So on top of inflation very many people were much worse off anyway

Putin saying the quiet part out loud

https://x.com/JuliaDavisNews/status/1856121278597320825

Meanwhile in Russia: Putin's presidential aide Nikolay Patrushev said, "To achieve success in the election, Donald Trump relied on certain forces to which he has corresponding obligations. As a responsible person, he will be obliged to fulfill them."

Interesting. I have a few thoughts about that.

One is that Putin can whistle for it. There's lots of talk of Trump being transactional: what it fails to mention is Trump's lifelong history of shaking hands on the deal then dropping his end.

But Trump's failure to fulfil deals isn't itself a barrier to him delivering for Vlad – as long as Vlad keeps up the flow of sweet-nothings to his ear. Trump likes to be wooed and made to feel precious every day: that's his motivator, not fulfilling a deal.

The other thought is more complex. Given this is coming from the Kremlin, I can't tell whether it's an inadvertent slip or something intentional. I've been saying for years that one of the reasons Kremlin "support" to other countries' political parties is such a winner is that it gives the Kremlin leverage – even if the "support" was unwanted and had no impact on the election.

Give every party a fiver each: if you don't like who wins, leak the story that it was the Kremlin wot put them there. Instant discrediting of the unwanted government.

So while in Trump's case, the bomb threats and the level of contact between Putin and Musk/Trump suggest the Kremlin has been quite heavily involved, Russia claiming credit for elections is something we can expect to see in other cases where it isn't true – and the "support" really wasn't wanted.

CaveMum · 12/11/2024 09:42

Richard and Marina had an interesting discussion on TRIE today about the role of media in the election and how the media landscape has shifted. Definitely worth listening too.

There isn't enough ironicum in the Universe to comment on "Donald Trump" and responsible person" in the same sentence.

While we are all assuming that Donnie Darling is in the pay of Putin, we need to consider the possibility that the Mango Mussolini is trying to get one over on Putin. Honour (sorry, honor) amongst thieves and all that.

CaveMum · 12/11/2024 12:55

Very good TRIP US today. Mooch saying he is hearing that a lot of Democratic supporters are angry and feel that they were misled by the campaign about how well things were going.

Also discussion about the appointees so far, I won't repeat it all here but recommend a listen.

SerendipityJane · 12/11/2024 13:45

Well, there was an almost universal narrative that things were "neck and neck" which the results rather seem to disprove. However the electoral college system can skew things so that a 49.9/50.1 split across the swing states can make it look like a landslide.

I would have thought that having grown up with this system (see what I did there ? 😀) the democrats would understand how the optics went. However if the Electoral College system is beyond them, it's no different to the total lack of understanding in the UK electorate about how FPTP distorts reality.

Which - returning to the US - is something the Republicans will need to bear in mind. They didn't "win a landslide" and assuming that >50% of the electorate, let alone the American Public, are backing you all the way could lead to some very fractious decisions.

Particularly as a fair number of voters voted blue down the ticket - Senate, House and State legislature (abortion, immigration, education etc) but went for Trump as president. So might not end up all rosy in Melania's Rose Garden*

(*wonder how that little horticultural project is doing now?)
