How do you make coffee at home?

What do you use and how do you drink it? I have used a Nespresdo machine for the past 2 decades but feel it’s quite a wasteful way of deinking coffee and would like something more “genuine”.
Is a french press the way to go? How do other people make their coffee at home?

Moka pot on the hob, or a cafetière if I’m making enough for others too (DH doesn’t like coffee so usually I’m the only coffee drinker).

LaPalmaLlama · 09/11/2024 17:10

Not quite what you asked but I use a Nespresso but get the pods from Grind and compost them. They mail them and you can set up a subscription.

I bought a cheap espresso machine for 80 quid on amazon a year ago, much better than nespresso, has a milk frother etc too and I love it.

I’ve got a moka pot for my induction hob, big enough for 2 cups, & I have my coffee with a bit of milk.

I buy the beans from my local independent coffee shop & have a small grinding machine. Although I usually have to stop & enjoy the scent of them for a few minutes first.

BrendaSmall · 09/11/2024 17:13

I bought a espresso machine with milk frother, my next purchase will be a bean to cup machine
Ive bought a pod machine a while ago and the coffee was awful, as a majority of the nes-crap pods contain instant coffee!!

AdoraBell · 09/11/2024 17:14

I drink black coffee so I use a cafetière.

PaminaMozart · 09/11/2024 17:15

Just a simple coffee grinder and a cafetiere. At the end of the day it's the coffee rather than the method that matters.

SatinHeart · 09/11/2024 17:15

We've got a filter machine as we both drink quite a lot of coffee (especially at weekends).

TheDandyLion · 09/11/2024 17:16

Cafetire. It's only me who likes it in this house so a bit overkill for a proper coffee machine taking up space in the kitchen. I like basic coffee with a drop of milk and id rather buy a fancy one from the local cafe.

RamblasTapas · 09/11/2024 17:16

I use a Phillips Senseo coffee machine. It uses pods ( like big tea bags) much less waste.

The Senseo machines are very popular in Europe.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 09/11/2024 17:21

I drink my coffee black and use a cafetiere. Sometimes I buy beans to grind at home, but often I buy ground.

The used grounds get slooshed on to the garden

Irridescantshimmmer · 09/11/2024 17:21

I grind my coffee beans at home using a manual burr bean grinder, then I make coffee fresh in a cafetiere.......it tastes delicious this way as opposed to the electric grinders and the difference in the taste is quite remarkable.

The filters paraphernalia on all cafetieres always need to be separated to prevent mould. I have had mine years whereas coffee machines last me 12 - 13 months.

My manual burr coffee bean grinder was under £90

I was curious about the coffee pod machines but the cost of the pods was as bad as taking out a mortgage but I am happy with my choice in the end.

I'm off to make a coffee!

I love my Mokka pots.

username7891 · 09/11/2024 17:26

I rarely drink coffee but use a cafetière.

EVHead · 09/11/2024 17:26

Bean to cup machine - best purchase ever!

Cafetière coffee has been shown to raise cholesterol so I avoid that.

KnigCnut · 09/11/2024 17:27

Bean to Cup machine.
Got it on a Black Friday deal.

IceSkates · 09/11/2024 17:27

We have a fancy Sage coffee machine and grinder for the coffee beans. It has the milk frother too. It’s used daily, so worth the investment.

Tastes better than any coffee shop coffee imho.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/11/2024 17:27

I buy beans and grind them fresh before use. Then I use a stainless steel mesh filter like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coffee-Permanent-Dripper-Paperless-Stainless/dp/B09PB6D7NL?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 which sits on my mug. I buy really good quality beans, which you can't do with Nespresso.

ArghhWhatNext · 09/11/2024 17:27

Mostly Nespresso machine using Illy pods but when this machine breaks I won’t replace it.
sometimes filter (I have an ancient plastic filter cone and make a mug at a time), sometimes cafetière if there are lots of people here and v occasionally mokka stovetop coffee. I’m not a fan of coffee bags as they’re too weak, but use them at work.

RandomMess · 09/11/2024 17:27

I've a one cup filter machine.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2024 17:28

Funnel - filter - boiling water - drip. Coffee needs to start out really hot imo.

DD makes hers in a moka pot.

We have a French press too but only use it if the other equipment is being washed.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 09/11/2024 17:28

I use a French press. The coffee comes out like rocket fuel though.

I used to have a Keurig machine but I was able to get a reusable pod from Amazon. I could fill it with any coffee I wanted and composted the spent grounds. It meant I got the advantages of a Keurig without the waste.

cinnamoncaby · 09/11/2024 17:29

Nola pot in the morning when I want several cups of coffee. I got the glitch Nespresso berry and make coffee in the afternoon.

Pallisers · 09/11/2024 17:29

I have a Cuisinart filter drip coffee maker that I use every day. I don't like coffee from nespresso or similar. Sometimes I will make it using a french press (dh slightly prefers this).
