How do you make coffee at home?

Seekingchange · 09/11/2024 17:08

What do you use and how do you drink it? I have used a Nespresdo machine for the past 2 decades but feel it’s quite a wasteful way of deinking coffee and would like something more “genuine”.
Is a french press the way to go? How do other people make their coffee at home?

Sage machine using whole beans

Wendysfriend · 09/11/2024 17:56

I've a bean to cup, tbh it drives me mad sometimes, so much faff to get a coffee. I'm now currently looking at ones that take pods but so many to choose from can't work out which one is nicest. Just want something quick, tasty and hot.

PorkPieForStarters · 09/11/2024 18:00

My go-to is coffee from a local café/roaster, I get whole beans and have a De'longhi electric bean grinder, but they would grind it for me at no extra cost if I wanted.

To make my coffee, I use a pour-over Hario V60 coffee dripper and their filter paper. I have a few of their drippers, they're all good. You just put your scoop of coffee into the filter paper in the dripper which sits on top of your mug, pour a little bit of boiled water in so it blooms, wait 30 seconds or so then pour the rest of the water in. Then just pop the filter in the bin and rinse the dripper under the tap.

It's a fairly quick process and there's very minimal clean up afterwards. Much easier than dealing with the grounds left in a cafetiere, I tend to grind a load of beans in one go so I have enough for a week and keep it in an air-tight jar in the cupboard.

I have a clever dripper, it's a dripper but has a valve so you can let it stew for 2 minutes. The are hard to get hold off now.

Pedallleur · 09/11/2024 18:04

Morning it's a cafetiere using fresh ground coffee. At work a nespresso machine. At home At weekends and holidays it's either a mokka pot (steel) or a gaggia classic machine.

Ponderingwindow · 09/11/2024 18:05

Super-automatic machine. It grinds the beans, makes the coffee, froths the milk, and then does a light clean of itself.

I unfortunately have to do a big clean of it once a week, but I am enough of a coffee addict that I don’t care.

Sibilantseamstress · 09/11/2024 18:06

Moka pot on the stove and milk in a cheap frother from amazon.

RayKray · 09/11/2024 18:11

I don't drink coffee but on the rare occasions I make my husband one I open jar, put teaspoon of coffee in mug, pour on boiling water. But I sense this isn't the thread for me.

maras2 · 09/11/2024 18:18

Teaspoon of Nescafe
Boiling water
Splash of milk.
Sugar to taste if you're that way inclined.

Which one have you got? Our bean to cup is less faff than a pod machine. I just turn it on and press a button!

We used to have a barista style one, but having to grind, press, pour, and clean at 0545 in the morning took its toll!! Love the bean to cup, it’s been such a great investment.

TheStarsLookVeryDifferentToday · 09/11/2024 18:20

Manual grinder for my coffee beans. For the coffee itself I've been using my Moka pot and cafetière for 30 odd years but recently tried a single cup pour over coffee filter which I love. It's just a metal cone that sits over your cup, no filter papers required. That's now my go to method if I only want one cup of coffee.

If all the messing about with coffee paraphernalia feels like too much effort there's always coffee bags. Taylors of Harrogate does some nice ones.

I go one better. I buy a sachet, open it and pout boiled water over it. Like this I can have capuccino, latte, whatever...
Also, the coffee in jar doesn't go hard with humidity because it only gets used when coffee people visit.

InformEducateEntertain · 09/11/2024 18:22

Sage bean to coffee machine. It even has a milk frother.

mrsm43s · 09/11/2024 18:22

I have a filter coffee machine and a bean grinder. I prefer the taste of filtered coffee to Americano/Italian style coffee, I find it more mellow.

I do use a moka pot over a camping stove when camping though.

Gouldstarr · 09/11/2024 18:25

We have a Lavazza pod machine with a milk frother. Makes a surprisingly good cup of coffee if you choose the right pods.

Lonelycrab · 09/11/2024 18:25

Cafetière, around 2 1/2 mugs full, served black no sugar. Lavazza red if it’s not too pricey at the shops otherwise whatever I can get for around £3.50/bag in my local shop (Tesco express)

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 09/11/2024 18:25

I use the more expensive instant powder. But I drink it with lots of milk and sugar, so I really don't appreciate the subtleties of anything more complicated!

Iamthemoom · 09/11/2024 18:26

Sage barista machine. 2 cups before I can function every morning then one mid morning. I drink it black so it has to taste good. My mum has a capsule machine and it's ok but nowhere near as good as the real thing.

Same but use Tesco decaf .

HundredMilesAnHour · 09/11/2024 18:33

I freshly grind my beans each time with a DF64 grinder and then make espresso and steam milk with my Profitec Go machine.

Occasionally I use a Hario V60 to make a pourover instead, and when I'm travelling I do the same but using my MiiR Pourigami. I avoid cafetieres as I always use too much coffee and end up with (lovely tasting) rocket fuel. 😂

Comedycook · 09/11/2024 18:35

I find this all so complicated and confusing. I just use instant!

nomorehocuspocus · 09/11/2024 18:36

Put kettle on.
Spoon Nescafe into mug.
Pour on hot water.
Add milk.
Drink it.

Can't be doing with any more faff than that.

Same here. Its like a competition. Who has the best coffee machine

crumpet · 09/11/2024 18:37

Cafetiere. Goes in the dishwasher. No messing about and less waste.

Oceangreyscale · 09/11/2024 18:40

Aeropress, super easy to make and to clean.
