How do you make coffee at home?

What do you use and how do you drink it? I have used a Nespresdo machine for the past 2 decades but feel it’s quite a wasteful way of deinking coffee and would like something more “genuine”.
Is a french press the way to go? How do other people make their coffee at home?

I bought a little second hand Braun coffee grinder recently. Works perfectly, cost under $5.

Nespresso machine, the grounds go on the garden and the washed pods into recycling.

I have a bean to cup machine from DeLonghi, I can’t remember how much it was but about £300 a few years ago. Has a slot for powdered as well so we can have one side caffeinated and one side decaffeinated. Also has a milk frother. We order Lavazza beans in bulk online and try various powders.

I have a delonghi espresso machine with a built in frother/milk wand. It’s great. Bean to cup with a built in grinder.

We have a professional coffee machine which cost around £1200 but I expect it to last 20+ years like the last one did. Coffee drinking is taken very seriously at our house!

Either a cafetière, for a slightly weaker brew, or a moka pot on the hob for coffee that puts hair on your chest. In both cases, beans fresh ground from whole.

Cotswoldmama · 09/11/2024 17:36

Moka pot, I've got a 1 cup and a 2 cup one. I have a cafetiere as well but prefer the moka pot.

PandoraSox · 09/11/2024 17:37

DH uses a Moka pot. I can't drink coffee any more, which makes me sad.

Heronatemygoldfish · 09/11/2024 17:37

Krups burr grinder plus a 'cup to go' permanent filter machine.
DH buys ridiculously strong ground coffee and uses a cafetière.

Xiaoxiong · 09/11/2024 17:37

@mathanxiety my bean grinder is a Braun too! You can wipe out the inside with a damp cloth and grind spices in it as well.

NamelessNinja · 09/11/2024 17:39

Bean to cup machine. It was an investment but I love it and coffee is good enough it saves me money on buying takeaway coffee out and about!

Aria999 · 09/11/2024 17:40

French press. Bodum.

We used to have a coffee machine that did latter and espresso but despite cleaning it, over time the coffee got more bitter and eventually we got rid of it.

We put them through the dishwasher after use.

Spoon coffee into mouth.
Slurp a little milk.
Pour in some hot water.
Shoogle head until well mixed.
Swallow.

Or set alarm earlier and make in mug.

We have a fancy Sage coffee machine and grinder for the coffee beans. It has the milk frother too. It’s used daily, so worth the investment.

Tastes better than any coffee shop coffee imho.

Same.

I also have a large cafetière for when there are lots of coffee drinkers and a single cup drip filter for travelling.

I can't believe I've been doing it so wrong for so long. Thanks Lisa

We’ve got my husbands grandma’s ancient bean to cup machine, its so old the plastic is now yellow, always works perfectly.

Wigtopia · 09/11/2024 17:47

Ceramic funnel thing with a filter paper for a single cup or the filter coffee machine for a full pot. Filter is my favourite way of drinking coffee.

roibustea · 09/11/2024 17:49

I have an espresso machine which tastes nice but is a bit of a pain as for every cup of coffee you have to add the coffee to the holder, tamp it down, attach it to the machine, and then empty the grounds and clean it. Which is a mild annoyance if you're making several cups. So I drink a lot of instant and save the fancy coffee for special occasions. When it dies I'll be investing in a fancy bean-to-cup where I can just turn it on, make coffee, then drink it.

LushLemonTart · 09/11/2024 17:49

I prefer Ringtons instant with a teaspoon of honey and milk. Dh has black cafetiere usually Italian roast. Friends and family usually get my Ringtons. I hate nescafe etc. Can just about bear douwe egberts.

Ragwort · 09/11/2024 17:50

Single plastic cone with filter paper & my favourite ground coffee - it makes one mug at a time ... I've tried so many coffee machines over the years but always go back to this - simple & cheap & I take it away with me when I stay in hotels (used to take it camping but fortunately no longer camp !).

PickleSarnie · 09/11/2024 17:50

I have a sage barista impress. It's my favourite possession ever. Grinds beans, has a frother that is pretty easy to get the hang off. Also, it's pretty. Some of the other brands of machines are a bit plasticy looking.

I can't deal with cafetiere or filter or shudder instant. I need good strong espresso to punch me in thr face in the morning.

WinterFoxes · 09/11/2024 17:52

I use a cafetiere. So easy, no waste. With a hand held milk frother for cappuccinos.

NotMeNoNo · 09/11/2024 17:54

Aeropress. Don't have space for a big machine and like the convenience. Also get a subscription decaf coffee ready ground to the right size. Get the cafetiere out sometimes but it's a faff to wash.

Eta- I just drink black decaf , DH takes milk but no need for special frothing etc
