How do you make coffee at home?

What do you use and how do you drink it? I have used a Nespresdo machine for the past 2 decades but feel it’s quite a wasteful way of deinking coffee and would like something more “genuine”.
Is a french press the way to go? How do other people make their coffee at home?

Bean to cup machine - best purchase ever!

Cafetière coffee has been shown to raise cholesterol so I avoid that.

Whats the science on that and how does it differ from bean to cup which is also water run through ground coffee?

ExperiencedTeacher · 09/11/2024 18:47

Espresso machine at home.

cafetière at work.

mesh filter when camping.

As some others have said - filter. Quick, simple, very cheap equipment - also fresh, clear and not over-heated/over processed/over extracted coffee to drink, which (to my mind, at least) is the trouble with some more complicated machines.

The ideal is freshly ground, but that can be v. v. expensive and not always practical. Maybe coffee experts will criticise, but I find Lidl's premium ground coffees really very nice.

Used coffee filter papers are excellent to biodegrade in the compost. I find that they deter slugs in the garden, also.

I have a sage bean to cup machine. It’s fantastic. I don’t often use the milk frother as I prefer cream.

wendywoopywoo222 · 09/11/2024 18:53

Spoon of Tesco decaf, splash of milk. Add boiling water from the kettle.

Had a pod machine but found the coffee not hot enough

choccytime · 09/11/2024 18:54

Absolutely amazed by all this its like another world !

LittleNincompoop · 09/11/2024 18:54

Aeropress

OptimisticMermaid · 09/11/2024 18:57

A nice big solid pretty silver cafetière. Sometimes grind the beans but not usually.
No milk.

dudsville · 09/11/2024 18:58

We have a coffee pod machine but i prefer the cafetiere. Strong black coffee that's quiet and no fuss, and I get afew cups from it as opposed to having to go back to the faffy machine each time.

I have a bean to cup machine, I got it for a (expensive, but not horrendously - Delonghi Magnifico) Christmas present 3 years ago. It's I really love it and take great care of it. I use Lidl Brazilian beans in it - really lovely. If it died I would save up for another.

If I have to drink decaf I use a cafetiere. I've found a lovely decaf grounds, unfortunately not in the UK or I would recommend it (SuperU decaf)

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 09/11/2024 19:19

Pour over - SO easy to clean up after! Just get good beans & freshly grind if you have time.

localnotail · 09/11/2024 19:30

Put a spoon of grounded coffee into a cup. Add boiling water, let it stand. Stir, drink (occasionally spitting out bits of coffee)

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 09/11/2024 19:37

Roast and grinded ( bought grinded or do it at home, manual grinder is fun ) , coffee and water to the boiling level ( best pot is Turkish coffee pot, some prefer made by what was the red metal), sieve it and add milk , sugar or just coffee

OhMyGiddyAunt · 09/11/2024 19:46

Gaggia Classic coffee machine and a separate grinder which DP and I use daily.

In the house there's also a stove top moka pot, cafetière, aeropress and filter coffee machine for other people/occasions. For example IL's like filter coffee when they come to stay, moka pot is handy for camping etc

Hardlyworking · 09/11/2024 19:48

Well that's horseshit, or you bought an awful cheapy brand. All nespresso pods contain freshly ground coffee. None contain instant.

I have a high end nespresso with the built in steam wand. It makes an excellent coffee and tastes much better than the very expensive bean to cup at work.

BoobyDazzler · 09/11/2024 19:48

Delongi espresso machine with frother - double espresso shot and enough hot frothy milk to make a coffee. Im not sure if that’s a latè or a cappuccino tbh.

BoobyDazzler · 09/11/2024 19:49

Oh and an aero press for camping.

mewkins · 09/11/2024 19:52

I have a Sage grinder and a Gaggia espresso machine with a steam wand. Yes making coffee is something of a faff but I've got it down to about three mins and it tastes great! (I also only drink two cups a day so it's not like I'm always making coffee).

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/11/2024 19:54

I make double strength coffee in a drip coffee maker; fill my cup about 1/3 full; and add foamed milk. A dusting of cinnamon and voila. (Goodbye over-priced cafe drinks that never taste as good).

GiraffeTree · 09/11/2024 19:59

Cafetière with ground coffee.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 09/11/2024 20:01

Put a spoonful of coffee into a cup, add hot water and oat milk and coffee syrup if I'm craving something sweet. Used to have a tassimo but hardly ever used it so it went to the tip

BobnLen · 09/11/2024 20:02

Just me drinks coffee in our house, DH drinks tea. I have a Smeg bean to cup machine which I got in the Black Friday sales last year and use that a lot for different coffee, I also sometimes have instant if I'm in a hurry. I also like those syrups to add to coffee and have some of those.

Luxembourgmama · 09/11/2024 20:05

I have a bialetti

Myfirstbornisacollie · 09/11/2024 20:05

Melitta bean to cup machine we drink quite a lot of coffee and having excellent coffee at home is one of life’s pleasures!

MrsPeregrine · 09/11/2024 20:06

Used to make it in my Delonghi bean to cup machine - until I broke it after accidentally putting the beans in the compartment intended for ground coffee. A replacement for the same machine would cost me over £600 🙄
