How do you make coffee at home?

What do you use and how do you drink it? I have used a Nespresdo machine for the past 2 decades but feel it’s quite a wasteful way of deinking coffee and would like something more “genuine”.
Is a french press the way to go? How do other people make their coffee at home?

Blue bear coffee made in an aeropress and then I heat the milk in my velvetiser.

That machine is magnificent @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats !

Thank you.
It isn't fast (boiler needs to heat up first) and it takes a bit of practice - so in a world of instant gratification and bean to cup machines they are a bit niche - but for quality of coffee, quality of machine and durability I'm not convinced they can be beaten.
My eldest son has grown up with it and loves his coffee so asked for one for his 21st birthday. His gets used as much as ours. 😁

Moka pot on the hob (use Lidl French blend number 5 coffee) make up to a full café Lungo by adding roughly 2/3's boiling water to the espresso.
It's how the Italians do it (but they probably don't use a French blend coffee 😁) 🇮🇹

French Press, £8 from The Range. Espresso ground coffee from Aldi, topped with double cream in a white, bone China mug. Just two every morning.
While waiting for it to brew, I put a Vit C tablet in a small drop of water and drink that for aches and mood. Stimulates collagen and Vit C is given to patients with depression.

Jura bean to cup at home - expensive, but worth it.

Away from home (we have a boat) Nescafe Espresso with cream.

Delonghi bean to cup machine, best investment ever.

longtompot · 10/11/2024 12:45

We use a cafetière aka a French press and use a bean grinder to grind the beans. My dh buys them online from here

He eventually want to buy a bean to cup machine. We only have a cup of coffee a day so want it to be a good cup, and we very rarely have coffee out in a cafe etc

Which one have you got? Our bean to cup is less faff than a pod machine. I just turn it on and press a button!

We used to have a barista style one, but having to grind, press, pour, and clean at 0545 in the morning took its toll!! Love the bean to cup, it’s been such a great investment.

Which machine do you have, please?

I'm interested in bean to cup machines but have adhd and struggle with simple tasks like cleaning out the cafetiere, so pods are appealing in that sense. Don't like the coffee as much though...

Whatamitodonow · 10/11/2024 13:02

Instant 🤷‍♀️

i like it. It’s less faff, much quicker, less cleaning, less space in the kitchen, less waste.

I also find it doesn’t have that slight bitter taste coffee from cafe’s etc has, so I prefer the taste.

mimiasovitch · 10/11/2024 14:54

I have a variety of Bialetti moka pots, in different colours and sizes, and I add hot water to make americano type coffee. I only really need two of them but they're just so pretty.

I use a Phillips Senseo coffee machine. It uses pods ( like big tea bags) much less waste.

The Senseo machines are very popular in Europe.

I have had Philips Senseo for ages, but have bought an adapter so now I use finely ground coffee instead of pods. It is not only cheaper but gives more choice of coffee as there isn’t much variety of pods available.

RamblasTapas · 10/11/2024 16:48

@juldan

Can you link to the adaptor please?

I've had a LaPavoni lever machine for over 30 thirty years. Gets used every day. Would be lost without it. When it's being serviced (very rarely) we use a cafetiere. Makes great coffee and looks fantastic 😁.

That's beautiful

Pylwin · 10/11/2024 19:11

I would absolutely love a bean to coffee machine but I don't really need one because I've already got all the equipment I need for an outstanding coffee

But once they all give up the ghost I'll be getting one

OolongTeaDrinker · 10/11/2024 19:17

I use a Nespresso machine, DH uses a cafetière.

GiddyRobin · 11/11/2024 14:15

All sorts!

Cafetiere
LaPavoni Espresso machine. I love this.
Stovetop coffee machine.

We alternate between grinding beans or buying pre-ground. I absolutely hate instant coffee, it makes me gag these days even though it's what I grew up with. I used to love the packets of instant cappuccinos when I was a kid, but then I worked in a very fancy coffee shop for 6 months, learned how to steam milk properly, how much coffee went in each drink, etc., and I just cannot go back.

I mainly drink black coffee tbh, but I absolutely love a flat white for breakfast with some toast made with homemade bread, or a lovely pastry. The way the milk is steamed makes it sweet, so I don't even need to add sugar.

juldan · 11/11/2024 17:11

@RamblasTapas
It is called Senseo coffee duck. I bought it from Amazon but now they only seem to have used ones available.

Pedallleur · 11/11/2024 17:18

Don't forget that all the machines need servicing at some point. New seals, using a descaler etc to keep the coffee tasting good. Oils build up so you need to use eg puly caff. Had my Gaggia serviced this year £80. That Pavoni looks fantastic. James Hoffman on you tube is a go to for coffee know how
