People of the left, can we learn some lessons from Trump's win please?

And other things, like Brexit, the disaster that was Jeremy Corbyn and his campaign.

Whilst there will be multi-factorial reasons for the way all these votes went, one of the reason, imo, is that far too many people on the left think anyone who disagrees with them is thick and racist. Do you remember that mock advert for Labour during JCs campaign? ' You are thick and racist - Vote Labour!'. That raised laughs because it resonated with how people felt about the Left.

Just stop being so bloody certain you are right and everyone else is wrong and start bloody listening to people who voted the way you don't want them to. Figure out why that is. Realise they actually have some legitimate concerns. Find ways to address these.

Because, and I can't believe I actually have to point this out, insulting people is not the way to win them over. Addressing their concerns is.

Because its not smart to sit there smugly thinking you are always right, even when voters are repeatedly disagreeing with you. It feels nice to think that, yes. But all that means is that you lack the courage to move yourself out of your psychological comfort zone. Its lazy, not smart. And it shows a distinct lack of intellectual curiosity.

I'm pretty pissed at Trump winning as I support Ukraine. I think the Left in America needs to look pretty hard at itself as to why a candidate such as Trump has won. And the left in the UK has lessons to learn too.

Why did people vote for Trump? Strong economy, dislike of migration, and his nationalism. There’s the attraction.

Any left wing party has to deal with those issues. Not pretend they do not matter to people.

I found the blatant racism from the liberal left over the selection of Kemi Badenoch to be revealing along with the lack of outright condemnation from the Labour Party.

I agree that's been shocking.

I think what happened in America is different from here - the man is a rapist - I don't have much faith left in our country, and I definitely don't have any faith on the Tory party, but despite the fact they will have people like Boris in charge, I can't see them or the voting public condoning an actual rapist as their PM..... maybe I'm naive.
That's what most shocking to me in this, is how America is a 'new' country and yet the misogyny runs so deep. I understand that people don't want to vote for Kamala, but the misogyny involved for people to believe that the sexual abuse claims against Trump are made up or exaggerated or not that bad.... it just gets lost in the noise.

Nope, I still can’t think of a good enough reason that I could use to justify voting for him. There seems to be non stop berating of the democrats and their supporters on here. How Trump and his repugnance is all our fault. How people who vote for him do it because of us. Honestly, no. Take some responsibility for your choices. We will all be on the receiving end. The whole world. If I were religious I’d say god help us.

Ok, you learn nothing and keep on thinking like that, and you know who the next President of the USA will be? Vance.

Trump is an bombastic egotist, doing this for the attention and glory. He's like a baby in softsuit compared to Vance.

The lesson is that we keep making the same mistakes over and over again and thereby dooming our species to extinction, along with a lot of other species as well.

But the bright sight is that Earth doesn't need us, is better off without us and will happily go on without us.

Perhaps this catastrophy is for the best. We could have started to resolve a lot of problems in the 70s when most of these problems were known. But we didn't. We deserve our fate.

The Left leaning Arts and film sector in the US rallied around Polanski who was an actual convicted child rapist, not just alleged, and continued to work with him. .
I don't remember condemnation of him from our UK actors, arts and film sector either.

Kamala made it all about Trump. Her main message was that she was not Trump instead of being constructive, clear and consistent about her own policies and intentions.

I did hope she would win, I thought she gained some momentum, but apparently not.

And I think all the celebrities support didn’t help, it pushed voters away.

But I’m not American and I’m not a voter there.

The celebrity stuff is an odd one. Maybe it goes down differently but maybe it's time to use other ways, ie policy etc

I do not think racism generally affects a vote over matters like the economy. The left always make a mistake when they don’t address the thing that motivates us all, getting bread on the table.

The equation is always that. Principled campaigns okay, but first and always first is the economy.

I suppose it was a two way traffic, some of them wanted to latch on to her, but it was quite tiresome.
Also, when there is distinct lack of policy, what do you do?
Again, I’m not American.

The Democrats really should have fielded a man. There's a load of men and women in America who were automatically against a female candidate. The fact that Harris is not white also went against her.

Any white man who had all his faculties (not Biden then) would have had a better chance of winning.

Then again as incumbent party there was a good chance that the chances were stacked against Harris.

What an enlightening and novel idea

lets keep perpetuating the idea that only a white man can run the world.

Let's face it, the US is too chauvenistic to elect a woman, or trump would never have been president.

MonkeyToHeaven · 06/11/2024 08:47

Lol. Surely the lesson, and we've all learnt that one, is that a populist party that demonises foreigners, the enemy within etc if their propoganda is left largely unchallenged by corporate media will get a sizeable amount of support.

You mention Corbyn's campaign, presumably you mean 2019? Because in 2017 Labour won 40% of the votes compared to Starmer's 34%. This despite the easy ride the establishment gave Starmer.

Exactly especially in a week where a black woman faced racist comments from the left after being elected as the leader of the Conservative Party.

One of many, Victor Salva also. Raped a 12 year old child actor in the 80's, filmed himself doing it, was convicted.... Still works in the industry.

We're talking about a person elected to president as President, with actual power and influence over the global political landscape, people's medical care, the financial markets.
I'm not sure I understand where the comparison is here, sorry - it's a political position, and Polanski was in the arts?
And I remember plenty of condemnation....There were a few very disappointing apologists that made the news, absolutely, but the majority of people were horrified, rightly!

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 06/11/2024 08:50

This is such a refreshing thread tbh.

People just either don’t realise - or, in my personal view, don’t care - that consistently calling people racist, thick, ‘red-necks’, inbred or worse is the surest way to push someone away.

It’s also just entirely undemocratic to try and shut people down based on their political views - it’s scarily reminiscent of 1984 - which I repeatedly see happening (particularly on other mumsnet threads right now).

Yes I agree

”Thick and racist” or not their vote is as valuable as everyone else’s. Maybe try and understand why they vote. I can’t pretend to understand why anyone would vote for a convicted criminal and misogynist but if people genuinely believe that Democrats make them poorer and they are already struggling who could blame them for believing Trump who says he can make it better? He won’t of course but if people believe it
