How to not be utterly depressed and scared about Trump winning

ChocolateMagnum · 06/11/2024 07:31

Is there any way at all to reframe the likely outcome of the US election? I just feel terrible this morning. Scared and angry. It's wasted energy, though. I can't do anything positive with these feelings and I'm guessing I'm not the only person feeling like this. How are other people finding ways to move out of this feeling so they aren't wasting time and energy on something they have no influence over currently?

Well the financial markets seem to be reacting positively to a Trump win with US stocks and the dollar both up.

Woo soooo happy to hear that

Never mind a lunatic in charge of America

@Deja321

Genuine question, do you believe that all the women who have accused Trump of sexual assault and rape over her span of decades are liars?

Do you believe it was a wrong decision to find him liable for sexual assault in the recent case?

If not, do you honestly think it's 'scaremongering' for people to suggest it's terrifying that a sex offender has just become arguably the most powerful man in the world?

You should all be celebrating! Go out and have a nice meal with champagne somewhere with your friends. The sunlit uplands of a Trump world await. God saved him for a reason!

One of the wisest comments on here. The world is like a bad episode of the Twilight Zone.

Are you really seriously trying to downplay the fact that the US has elected an insane misogynistic criminal sex offender as their president

Really??

I don't believe he is those things. I have real concerns about the media bias against trump and the lengths the establishment have gone to to stop him running.
He has been president before, Harris was vice, the American people must feel things were better under trump. I wish him well and I hope things can improve now.

curiousS · 06/11/2024 10:32

Are you in the US? Otherwise, I don't understand all these posts this morning about people being utterly sacred and depressed!
It really isn't going to affect us that directly.
People are massively overreacting.

Mochudubh · 06/11/2024 10:33

I think footage from the last few weeks show he's in cognitive decline, possibly worse than Biden.

I give it 2 years at most before Vance takes over, which doesn't fill me with confidence either and I agree he's a bit of a scary prospect too. but I do think that Vance at least has a brain whereas Trump has always been thick as mince.

Its perfectly normal to get upset about things that affect them directly.

I'm upset about the treatment of women in Afghanistan for example. I don't know any of those women personally and will never travel there. But you don't think I can be upset for them?

Politics itself has basically become a show and a parody of sorts. People are so jaded by the system they are voting in entertainers, it’s not just in the US. 24/7 access to media online and all sorts has a lot to do with it.
The legal checks and balances and Senate will hopefully dampen the madness.

It is difficult with Trump to decide what he genuinely believes vs the persona he publicly portrays. At least he doesn’t drink etc and is very disciplined. For all his faults, one has to admire the energy and zest at his age.

And at least Putin and other crazies will be scared of him somewhat. Like a deterrent of sorts regardless of the very worrying statements he has made on NATO.

I am also wondering about Elon Musk’s political future. I reckon he won’t be happy until he has a plan for life on another planet…

I was just thinking earlier that the USA is basically living out the plot of Don't Look Up at this point. Right down to the elites planning to head off world. Meanwhile the Bible belters are waiting for the Rapture, not realising that Musk has his own ideas about ascending to heaven...

I think what makes me despair the most is the tendency in recent years, and I'm not just talking USA here, to vote emotively based on soundbites with no data behind them.

"I'll fix the economy" - but no indication of how
"The economy is worse now than when I left power 4 years ago" - no shit Sherlock, we've had a global pandemic since then with all economies across the world crashing
"I'll get inflation down" - again, no indication of how (though in general globally things are heading that way anyway)
"I'll end the war in Ukraine" - no indication how, but we know the only way to end it quickly is by giving Russia what it wants
"I'll stop all immigration, thereby saving us from all the rapists and murderers" - well apart from the fact that he himself is a 3rd generation immigrant, and his wife is an immigrant (as was his first wife), and his VP's wife is of Indian extraction, I didn't realise that all the murderers and rapist in the USA were illegal immigrants (hint: they aren't) or that every immigrant was a murderer or rapist (another hint: they aren't)

People have always voted on statements of intent; very few people read into the finer detail of policy. This is not (even remotely) anything new - it's the norm. And he's not spoken in 'all' terms either, that's entirely your own (pointless?) slant.

I'm not keen on Trump, however all the hysterical nonsense this morning - people in the UK crying (honestly 🙄) people (who've most likely did nothing for war hit communities, probably spare little to no thought day to day) 'despairing for Ukraine'. It's an outpouring of insincere garbage.

I'm despairing this morning, despairing at what social media and rolling news has did to some people's perception and rationale. The best thing those people can do is get offline for a while (I'm being serious btw, not facetious - people's heads are genuinely being wasted by twitter and the like).

VivianLea · 06/11/2024 10:39

They shouldn't have fucked around with a shambles of an opposition. You can't blame people for voting for their own party - you can blame the opposition for doing a piss poor job of convincing the undecideds not to.

curiousS · 06/11/2024 10:41

@whathaveiforgotten sure you can. But people getting to the point of despair and depression is over the top and only going to make themselves stressed and anxious over something they have no control over. It's a wasted emotion.

Totally agree. It's a symptom of cultural domination. Because US culture dominated our media, news outlets and cultural tones, some people seem to mistakenly believe that they in fact live in the US. Where was the hysteria when right wing politicians came into power in Europe, or across the world more generally? No one without ties to the country has ever cried about an Australian election.

Lampzade · 06/11/2024 10:42

He will last two years or so, then JD Vance will take over and will be even worse.
The Democrats and the Republicans fielded two very weak candidates.

SabreIsMyFave · 06/11/2024 10:43

Look on the bright side. At least he can never EVER run again. Once these next four years are done that's it. He's history.

Disappointing news, as I wanted Harris to win, but I suspected Trump would win.

Dark day for some Americans.

caringcarer · 06/11/2024 10:44

I felt exactly Like this when Starmer won. It's democracy, we just have to accept the majority vote.

HoppingPavlova · 06/11/2024 10:46

I am not a Trump supporter and am extremely frustrated and disappointed by the result. However, the answer to your question is yes. While the guy is a complete and utter turd, the sky didn’t fall in, nor did the world end, when he was President before. So……… Realistically the worse that can happen is he gets another term after this, though I’m not familiar with American laws and whether limit to terms in office are in total or have to be sequential. So, basically a ‘this too shall pass’ approach.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 06/11/2024 08:27

He doesn't look in the best of health.
With any luck he will not last the 4 years.

He looks in 100 percent better health than Biden over the last 4 years.

AnonymousBleep · 06/11/2024 10:47

Deja321 · 06/11/2024 10:18

I strongly suggest you stop or reduce watching the news and other tv shows. There is alot of bias and scaremongering against trump and his supporters. Remember he was president before, they continually said he would start ww3, he didn't.

I also listen to alot of Conservative/trump supporters on YouTube. Most are just normal decent people, not the terrible things media and left wing politicians say about them. Calling them white supremacist etc is deeply offensive and I think the left need to stop doing that. You dont win people over by insulting them.

They literally voted for a rapist and fraudster. It doesn't smack of caring about decency and a better world tbh.

Truthy · 06/11/2024 08:27

Was it based on them putting tampons in the boys rest rooms?
I think it's a big win for womens and parents rights in the US.
The puberty blockers and gender surgeries for children is not good.

Big win for women? Really?

How about those that will die due to removed access for women's health? A friend in Texas already had to pay thousands to leave the state to abort an ectopic pregnancy as they wouldn't do it in Texas until her life was at risk. She would have literally had to wait till her tube ruptured. And her health insurance has no out of state coverage. How about the women he has, and possibly will, sexually assault? How do you think women will fare under Christian rule? This is a man who cares nothing for women.

Hasn't he already said he plans to change things that could prevent him being president again?

dottiehens · 06/11/2024 10:49

Just accept the results gratefully and stop being influenced by the media like CNN or BBC that are biased. Nothing terrible would happen and the win is a landslide so it is the will of the people.

Be grateful for democracy and let the US heal and unite. The results means people want change so I am happy for them.

It was pretty shit though, especially if you were a woman in Afghanistan, and Trump's decision to pull out all his troops meant the Taliban back and a return to the dark ages.

Plus the environment will be fucked and climate change sped along.

genesis92 · 06/11/2024 10:51

Do you think you're being a tad dramatic? What happened that was so bad in his last term for you?

I'm not a Trump supporter by the way, I just don't believe it's the drama many are making it out to be
