How to not be utterly depressed and scared about Trump winning

ChocolateMagnum · 06/11/2024 07:31

Is there any way at all to reframe the likely outcome of the US election? I just feel terrible this morning. Scared and angry. It's wasted energy, though. I can't do anything positive with these feelings and I'm guessing I'm not the only person feeling like this. How are other people finding ways to move out of this feeling so they aren't wasting time and energy on something they have no influence over currently?

I think the only thing we can do is mock Trump at every opportunity that he provides for us. Like remember the cat and dog speech - people on tiktok were so funny with pretending to cook their cats and dogs and the pet videos were so funny too.

The only thing we can do is mock him to fuck.

Cattenberg · 06/11/2024 09:42

It’s a sad and embarrassing day for America and I fear for Ukraine and for the global efforts to combat climate change. But Trump’s last presidency didn’t cause the sky to fall in, so hopefully he won’t affect life in the UK very much.

@Truthy you think Trump winning is a good thing for WOMEN?

It is for unborn baby girls.

Pray for the Ukranians 🙁

This. I am really worried about this😓

OhshutupSimonyounobhead · 06/11/2024 09:47

Why the worry? He is going to make America great again (just like the last time he was in power).

MumOfOneAllAlone · 06/11/2024 09:48

I do wonder whether he'll put a stop to netanyahu's activities?

AliasGrape · 06/11/2024 09:51

I can't quite believe that mocking a disabled reporter didn't end it, grab em by the pussy didn't end it, January 6th didn't end it, being a convicted felon didn't end it. I will never understand how one person could fill in the circle next to his name, never mind 70 million.

It's all of this - I had a cry this morning, just because what does it say about people/ the world that 70 million people can vote for such a terrible person. I don't give a fuck about if you think his economic policy was better blah blah - if you can have watched the shit that came out at the last rally and still vote for him, then you're more ok with racism, bigotry and fascism than you should be, and that's scary.

If 70 million people can read stories like that of Nevaeh Crain and continue to vote for the fanatics who would rather let a pregnant 18 year old die than afford her basic right to lifesaving treatment, what does that say about the world our daughters are growing up in?

I don't care if Harris wasn't the perfect candidate, I don't care what excuses Trump voters used to justify voting for a figure who incites nothing but hate, division and bigotry, and I don't care about think pieces on what the left can learn from this - don't vote for a fucking acknowledged rapist who threatens 'mass deportations from day 1' and dress it up as concern over the economy.

I accept it's an emotional response, and not a particularly considered one. I'm sure there's more nuance to it than all that, but I'm going to allow myself today to have my emotional reaction. And I'm going to avoid any news coverage, I just don't think I can bring myself to look at his face today.

Pregnant teenager died trying to get help on three trips to Texas ERs

Doctors who spoke to ProPublica and reviewed Crain’s medical information said she should have been treated at the first hospital

frozendaisy · 06/11/2024 09:51

Like PP have said, the bemoaning of many, I hear many elders talking about waiting months for medical appointments then they admit to voting Reform, and I think yeah you voted Brexit and then think, so your knee is going to hurt for months, and don't care.

What I say is "we are all in the same boat, unless you can go private of course"

A selfish society breeds more selfishness.

I hate it.

Listening to him rambling and spouting nonsense right now is truly depressing.

Don’t listen to him then.

As pp said we can’t do anything to change things so it’s pointless following everything closely if it depresses you.
stay away from sm and the tabloids.
i thought trump would win so decided just to skim the bbc headlines and avoid everything else.

Calhudd · 06/11/2024 09:59

Errr… sleep well knowing the only guy who didn’t start any new wars in 150 years is back in office. The economy will correct so you can afford to feed your kids, and less people will die.

NetballHoop · 06/11/2024 10:03

It's only 4 years. It will pass. Unlike bloody Brexit.

@Kombuchamonster

"Except the UK economy will massively suffer from Trump's tariffs."

True and LabourforKamala campaign probably wasn't the smartest move by the Labour Party.

Starmer on the other hand took a more cautious and wise approach by calling Trump after the assassination attempt and getting him more on side. That will have more weight with the orange one than what a sub group within government have supported.

Minihero · 06/11/2024 10:04

I'm more concerned about what is happening in Afghanistan. Those women didn't vote for their own oppression.

Yes that is the first thing I thought about, but then why isn't the EU doing more?

He is correct in that Europe needs to step up and start spending their own cash on defence rather than relying on the US.

Germany especially has a lot to answer for.

NetballHoop · 06/11/2024 10:03

You think he'll allow there to be another election after 4 years? Doubt it.

Allergictoironing · 06/11/2024 10:06

I think what makes me despair the most is the tendency in recent years, and I'm not just talking USA here, to vote emotively based on soundbites with no data behind them.

"I'll fix the economy" - but no indication of how
"The economy is worse now than when I left power 4 years ago" - no shit Sherlock, we've had a global pandemic since then with all economies across the world crashing
"I'll get inflation down" - again, no indication of how (though in general globally things are heading that way anyway)
"I'll end the war in Ukraine" - no indication how, but we know the only way to end it quickly is by giving Russia what it wants
"I'll stop all immigration, thereby saving us from all the rapists and murderers" - well apart from the fact that he himself is a 3rd generation immigrant, and his wife is an immigrant (as was his first wife), and his VP's wife is of Indian extraction, I didn't realise that all the murderers and rapist in the USA were illegal immigrants (hint: they aren't) or that every immigrant was a murderer or rapist (another hint: they aren't)

TheYoungestSibling · 06/11/2024 10:08

This feels like bad news in a global scale. For Ukrainians, for Palestine, for women, for the climate.

I can do nothing to stem the tide, just like brexit. I feel adrift in a world I don't fully understand.

Also worried that he might change the law to remain in office. Or he might not survive and that puts the opportunist unprincipled Vance in charge.

Is there any good news?

Minihero · 06/11/2024 10:06

Yes, I do think there'll be more elections in the US.

I despise him and everything he stands for but I don't believe he can overturn the US constitution.

You should all be celebrating! Go out and have a nice meal with champagne somewhere with your friends. The sunlit uplands of a Trump world await. God saved him for a reason!

Seriously hope you’re being sarky.

Deja321 · 06/11/2024 10:18

I strongly suggest you stop or reduce watching the news and other tv shows. There is alot of bias and scaremongering against trump and his supporters. Remember he was president before, they continually said he would start ww3, he didn't.

I also listen to alot of Conservative/trump supporters on YouTube. Most are just normal decent people, not the terrible things media and left wing politicians say about them. Calling them white supremacist etc is deeply offensive and I think the left need to stop doing that. You dont win people over by insulting them.

1dayatatime · 06/11/2024 10:19

Well the financial markets seem to be reacting positively to a Trump win with US stocks and the dollar both up.

I felt the same about Brexit, it really got me down to think that this country I love had majority voted to leave the EU. I felt like I didn’t belong here any more, somehow. That feeling of alienation hasn’t gone away and I have become much more selfish and self-interested as a result. I find it harder to sympathise with people who are struggling, wondering if they were one of the people who voted us out of the EU.

Give it time for your heart to harden and then try to ignore the crap that follows. As you point out, you cannot change a single thing.

COVID and Ukraine are what's causing most of the cost of living crisis.

Are you really seriously trying to downplay the fact that the US has elected an insane misogynistic criminal sex offender as their president

Really??
