How to not be utterly depressed and scared about Trump winning

Is there any way at all to reframe the likely outcome of the US election? I just feel terrible this morning. Scared and angry. It's wasted energy, though. I can't do anything positive with these feelings and I'm guessing I'm not the only person feeling like this. How are other people finding ways to move out of this feeling so they aren't wasting time and energy on something they have no influence over currently?

OP posts:

I feel sick for my Ukrainian friends.

BruceAndNosh · 06/11/2024 08:56

I'm going to vent my frustration on the garden. I have three shrubs to plant and I hate digging holes.

Well yes, dont think men should compete in women's sports or be allowed in their locker rooms/toilets, don't think kids should have gender surgery, don't think abortions should be allowed after a certain point, don't agree with this all dei agenda,
True, Trump is not a good man, but his policies are better than kamalas.
Why don't you think his and his partys policies are good for women or men or children?

He's a rapist. He was caught on tape saying "grab em by the pussy". He's allowing the right to remove reproductive rights (even though I'm guessing countless of his partners have terminated unwanted pregnancies). He will do nothing for women and children living in poverty, or with domestic violence.

No matter your views on gender and trans people, this is a very bad day for women.

OP, there is absolutely no point in worrying about things over which you have no control. I'm not happy about the result either, but I know that my day to day life will continue to be exactly the same as it was before. We'll all get on with our lives, and won't even think about the US presidency.

1dayatatime · 06/11/2024 08:58

One positive from Trump's success is that the financial markets seem to favour a Trump Presidency with US stock markets and the dollar both up.

BarbaraHoward · 06/11/2024 08:58

2016 felt personal and shocking to me, as a woman. This time there's no shock just depression.

I can't quite believe that mocking a disabled reporter didn't end it, grab em by the pussy didn't end it, January 6th didn't end it, being a convicted felon didn't end it. I will never understand how one person could fill in the circle next to his name, never mind 70 million.

And now he's giving an anti vax conspiracy theorist a healthcare role.

Politics itself has basically become a show and a parody of sorts. People are so jaded by the system they are voting in entertainers, it’s not just in the US. 24/7 access to media online and all sorts has a lot to do with it.
The legal checks and balances and Senate will hopefully dampen the madness.

It is difficult with Trump to decide what he genuinely believes vs the persona he publicly portrays. At least he doesn’t drink etc and is very disciplined. For all his faults, one has to admire the energy and zest at his age.

And at least Putin and other crazies will be scared of him somewhat. Like a deterrent of sorts regardless of the very worrying statements he has made on NATO.

I am also wondering about Elon Musk’s political future. I reckon he won’t be happy until he has a plan for life on another planet…

I'm afraid this is completely incorrect. Putin will be absolutely thrilled this morning. It now seems far more likely that Ukraine will have to surrender its sovereign territory to Russia, and Trump has played right into Putin's hands from the outset.

KoalaCalledKevin · 06/11/2024 09:00

Was it based on them putting tampons in the boys rest rooms?

The law just said they be available for students who need them. Some republican states have similar laws, it's not unique or even unusual.
Trump signed into law an act that included a requirement for menstrual products to be provided in federal prisons. This law was for all federal prisons - not just female ones.

"Tampon Tim" is only used by people who think tampons/periods are things to be sniggered at. "Haha a man talking about tampons".

Rigatone · 06/11/2024 09:01

A sort of positive to cling to:

A couple of weeks ago an environmentalist was interviewed on radio 4 (sorry I forgot his name). He was asked, how worrying is it for you that Trump will likely remove America from the Paris climate agreement again if he wins. The environmentalist said, I'm not too worried because last time he did that 37 US states signed themselves back up and continue to work toward the pledges.

So I suppose the autonomy each of the states has means it's not just Trump ruling the whole lot. Although it's seems and feels like it and it's terrifying.

Except the UK economy will massively suffer from Trump's tariffs.

You are not responsible for the election result.

You could not and did not influence the outcome.

This too shall pass.

I said he is not a good man.
Why do you say he will do nothing for poor people or domestic violence?
What you hear from most Americans is that they were better off when he was in power, especially minorities.
Democrats hate minorities and are responsible for the large number of black single mothers through their policies and seem to be extremely racist.
Ignoring his own personal flaws why don't you like his policies?

TheGoddessFrigg · 06/11/2024 09:03

I was actually in tears this morning- and I never cry. I just keep of Ukraine. And Zelensky- who is probably going to end up like Navalny.

And that vile Elon Musk and Vance- women hating populists with no principles.
I think it's going to be a dangerous time for Europe as Putin will think he can do what he wants. The Baltic states must be feeling very nervous

"Except the UK economy will massively suffer from Trump's tariffs."

True and LabourforKamala campaign probably wasn't the smartest move by the Labour Party.

IncessantNameChanger · 06/11/2024 09:06

I just think it's what the majority of Americans wanted for their own country. It feels insane but they choose what's best for them, not us. As would we.

JeremiahBullfrog · 06/11/2024 09:06

Some actual reassurances for OP rather than just fanning the flames of anxiety:

  • People have voted for a vague concepts which resonate with them, not generally for firm policies; it's unclear what Trump might actually want to do.
  • Most US presidents don't manage to do even the things they say they want to do, because of the way the system is set up.

It’s the opposite though. Putin will be very happy about this. It is just what he wanted. Trump will make it out that Ukraine won the war, when in reality everyone knows it was Russia who won it because Trump will let Putin keep the areas he already won in the Ukraine. Which will make Putin and other leaders even more dangerous. They will definitely test the bounderies more, like flying over Sweden and Finland and test the borders. It will escalate. Not good. Putin is not scared.

Exactly. Why would Putin be scared of him? Trump thinks Putin is a wonderful strongman.

And certain other leaders, China and Xi Jinping, are watching closely. If Putin is successful Xi Jinping might head towards Taiwan.

Take a reality check - limiting social media/media (perhaps significantly) should be enough.

JazzyJelly · 06/11/2024 09:36

I just can't get over how sexist Americans are.

I don't think I'll see a female president in my lifetime.

LetThereBeLove · 06/11/2024 09:38

Cloouudnine · 06/11/2024 07:35

I felt the same about Brexit, it really got me down to think that this country I love had majority voted to leave the EU. I felt like I didn’t belong here any more, somehow. That feeling of alienation hasn’t gone away and I have become much more selfish and self-interested as a result. I find it harder to sympathise with people who are struggling, wondering if they were one of the people who voted us out of the EU.

Give it time for your heart to harden and then try to ignore the crap that follows. As you point out, you cannot change a single thing.

Exactly the same for me.

I read that private prison stocks were up in anticipation of all the people who will now be rounded up. Grim.

MargotwithaT · 06/11/2024 09:41

I detest him but it wasn’t a shock. Nobody knows how this will play for Ukraine and the UK economy. I wouldn’t put it past Trump to impose tariffs on the EU and exempt the UK. He’s that crazy.
