How to not be utterly depressed and scared about Trump winning

Is there any way at all to reframe the likely outcome of the US election? I just feel terrible this morning. Scared and angry. It's wasted energy, though. I can't do anything positive with these feelings and I'm guessing I'm not the only person feeling like this. How are other people finding ways to move out of this feeling so they aren't wasting time and energy on something they have no influence over currently?

It's not much of a silver lining but I think vance could see out this term. I think Trump will lose capacity. He's clearly lacking all his faculties.

I was certain he'd win. Americans are stupid and hate women leaders.

Kombuchamonster · 06/11/2024 08:22

Send all your thought and prayer energy to Zelensky, and to our European leaders who will now need to step up and show leadership like never before. Sometimes dire circumstances bring out the best in people and I hope beyond hope this will happen now.

"What I'll do is not watch the news. Can't bear the sight and sound of him."

Same here. A very depressing day. I'm trying not to let it affect me, but it is. The news will be full of his victory and the triumphant supporters of Trump will be everywhere.

If it was the Republican Party people were voting for, then I could understand that. It's politics, so fair enough, different people want different things. But, if it was Trump specifically that people were voting for, then I will never understand that.

When I first heard this witty nickname I assumed it was based on some gaff, or embarrassing incident (like Charles and Camilla..), rather than just that he said schools had to provide period products.

What are the safeguards against him making the US into a dictatorship? How failsafe are those safeguards?

I suppose it depends on the seats won in the Senate and House of Representatives

If he lost, the civil unrest he would incite would be worse, I suppose. Little comfort, though.

Not comforting.

Exactly.

There are virtually no safeguards as he's winning both houses and has the Supreme Court in his pocket plus Vice President Musk.

Well American is f*** then. As looks like they got the senate

ToBeOrNotToBee · 06/11/2024 08:27

He doesn't look in the best of health.
With any luck he will not last the 4 years.

Araminta1003 · 06/11/2024 08:27

Politics itself has basically become a show and a parody of sorts. People are so jaded by the system they are voting in entertainers, it’s not just in the US. 24/7 access to media online and all sorts has a lot to do with it.
The legal checks and balances and Senate will hopefully dampen the madness.

It is difficult with Trump to decide what he genuinely believes vs the persona he publicly portrays. At least he doesn’t drink etc and is very disciplined. For all his faults, one has to admire the energy and zest at his age.

And at least Putin and other crazies will be scared of him somewhat. Like a deterrent of sorts regardless of the very worrying statements he has made on NATO.

I am also wondering about Elon Musk’s political future. I reckon he won’t be happy until he has a plan for life on another planet…

Was it based on them putting tampons in the boys rest rooms?
I think it's a big win for womens and parents rights in the US.
The puberty blockers and gender surgeries for children is not good.

Vance is much scarier, to me. He seems to genuinely hate women. He also openly said he couldn't care less about Ukraine. My only consolation is that he seems to be quite unpopular so (I hope) we won't be looking at President Vance a few years down the line.

As for Trump...Well, let's just see how it plays out. It's not good news but it may not be all bad either.

betterangels · 06/11/2024 08:29

How people can say this is win for women's rights is baffling.

So dark. The poor old planet. The Dems need to pull their figure out and get a damn good, male 🙄 🙄 candidate for the next election.
😤

FreshLaundry · 06/11/2024 08:36

It’s a very bad day for global climate action, with Trump in charge.

i just cannot understand how women in particular could elect a rapist felon.

Mmhmmn · 06/11/2024 08:36

They should regroup and start organising their leadership race. Clearly it can’t be Kamala.

@Truthy you think Trump winning is a good thing for WOMEN?

Well yes, dont think men should compete in women's sports or be allowed in their locker rooms/toilets, don't think kids should have gender surgery, don't think abortions should be allowed after a certain point, don't agree with this all dei agenda,
True, Trump is not a good man, but his policies are better than kamalas.
Why don't you think his and his partys policies are good for women or men or children?

Nobodywantsthis · 06/11/2024 08:50

On a positive note, I'm very very glad I live in the UK right now. I'd rather have our boring politics than that criminal racist sexist nutcase as our leader.
I just don't know how I'm going to put up with seeing Trump on TV for another 4 years. Makes me sick 🤮

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 06/11/2024 08:51

What helped me was (before the election) reading some of the interviews with Republican voters.

Perhaps unsurprisingly they weren’t voting “for Trump” they were voting Republican based on individual issues that were important to them. I didn’t necessarily agree, but mostly they weren’t massively divisive.

Most of those voters seemed to dislike or be embarrassed by Trump, but to recognise that he was what was necessary with a populist political scene. Of those that felt that way, they felt there were sufficient people around him to hold him in check.

It helped to remind me that it’s not actually a TV show, nor quite as sensationalist as we like to think. I think we have a media-driven image of an illiterate redneck in a MAGA cap, but that’s too simplistic.

I am also going to do some reading up about the mechanisms of US government, rather than just relying on re-runs of The West Wing. Someone pointed out that the office of President is more outward than inward facing and has less real power than people think, and I’d like to understand more about what that means.

gladpurpledog · 06/11/2024 08:53

I’m thinking they’ve only got themselves to blame.
