Looks like Trump could win?

It's looking good for Trump. My dad is a total Trump hater and has been convinced that he won't win, especially since Kamala took over.
I don't know how the system works but is it too early to say that Trump is going to win?

I feel really miserable. Concerned about the rise of right wing ideology and losing faith in humanity.

I'm genuinely confused this time. Why???

Up until this point I have only rationalised it by thinking that the majority of the American population must simply be uneducated and/or stupid. But I am starting to think there is something else I need to be aware of.

Can anyone explain to me why Americans have voted this way?

Genuine question- and at this point I'm honestly willing to listen and learn, because obviously the Democrats are getting something majorly wrong that I'm just not aware of. How can they have failed so badly as to warrant at Trump victory?

This is very depressing 😥

Is it to do with Americans looking at the state of things and thinking 'Things could only get worse'?

Perhaps not wanting to spend money on immigrants getting sex changes in prison or the racism behind 'black men need more access to drugs'?

I mean, come on. The whole last 4 years have been an utter shitshow.

@LifeExperience "Americans are split on abortion. Most are okay with it up to a point, but Harris ran on abortion up to the day of birth,"

Please can you show me where Harris ran on this abortion up to day of birth? I've been looking and can't find anything.

And abortion is not a left / right wing issue. Plenty of people on both sides have various views regardless of their economic inclinations.

Good question. Where did that information come from?

On all the news feeds I saw, the people voting for the giant orange toddler were quoting completely false information

Russia has won this election for Trump by spamming SM with misinformation.

The vast majority of non-Americans do not care as much about this election as they seem to due to concern or care for the average American.

Most non-Americans care (that much!) because we know that this election will affect us or causes important to us. Our economies, international trade, the security of Europe, the war in Ukraine etc. For others it’s Taiwan, Gaza…

we hear about the South supporting him but he would never make it without America’s middle class’ vote. I strongly agree.

i don’t understand what you’re telling me about non Americans and the election.

I was replying to a poster that was asking how can Americans vote for Trump and I explained my personal view based on my experience when I lived there.

Netanyahu is evidently already making moves - removing the more dovish Gallant.

Expect Tel Aviv to really take off the gloves now.

The world is a safer place for all of us if Putin is not cornered. If he feels more secure he is less likely to nuke. Ukraine has managed to drag the world to the point of war for the sake of a small and insignificant amount of land and overinflated ego of Zelenskyy. In a few years Putin will be dead anyway and very unlikely to be replaced by someone of his ilk.

@Bewareofthisonetoo
Please do not try to belittle what Russia has done / is doing to Ukraine. It's appalling.
You can't just roll your tanks into another country, kill people and occupy it just because you want to. Thousands and thousands of needless deaths just because Putin wants the old empire back.

I bet Putin is running his hands with glee now that Trump is coming back

It's not sexism. There's some of that to be sure, but she ran a terrible campaign and never focused on the issues that in poll after poll the American people were saying were more important.

Americans are split on abortion. Most are okay with it up to a point, but Harris ran on abortion up to the day of birth, which is way further to the left than all but the most rapid leftists.

Absolute bollocks. Harris would reinstate ’Roe’ so abortions up to 24 weeks, at the extreme.

@Llhaaf you're a UK teacher who is glad that a racist rapist is about to be voted into power?

Help us. Stop the train, I want to get off.

I’m a teacher who doesn’t like the direction that the left has been taking us in.

AliasGrace47 · 06/11/2024 06:43

Beware, that sounds like Chamberlain, ' Czechoslovakia is a faraway country of whom we know nothing.'
The argument about Putin is possible. Buy would he nuke knowing we can nuke him back? If we roll over & US turns a blind eye, he might decide to realise further dreams of extra land..

I agree. I think it will absolutely be WWIII now.

He won’t care about the UK. Especially with a Labour PM. We have fucked off the EU with Brexit. I think a Trump win is an utter disaster for us.

I think I’m going to have to go ‘no news’ for four years.

Sorry but wasn't there less fighting in the world when Trump was last president?

These sorts of men only listen to other men.

Just thinking of the people of Ukraine, Putin will be delighted if predictions are true. I wonder what country will be next for Putin?

The Baltics if Trump weakens NATO commitments.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/11/2024 06:44

EsmaCannonball · 06/11/2024 06:27

I've just woken up to this, not too surprising, news and all I can think about is Ukraine and the threat to the world from autocracies. The people of Ukraine are fighting and dying to defend democracy for us all, meanwhile the Democrats in America are so indulged and divorced from reality, so wedded to silly campus politics, that they think they can afford to play at elections.

Why didn't they jettison Biden earlier? Why didn't they hold primaries to find a serious and popular contender? Why did they devote all their energies to scolding people as racist and sexist when those people tried to point out that Harris was a lightweight candidate?

Fuck, fuck, fuck. The left of politics needs to stop playing around with adolescent, luxury beliefs and find its way back to addressing the world's real concerns.

They paid for their arrogance.

Why on Earth did they persist with Biden?
And Kamala’s biggest positive was that she wasn’t Trump.

I was hoping she’d win but at the same time I wasn’t convinced she’d make a good president.

Lyannaa · 06/11/2024 06:44

I hate Trump personally for his probable sexual assaults & proved misogyny. But imo he's the sort of person who says outrageously unpleasant things but doesn't follow them through, mostly.

The crucial difference this time, though is that he is now surrounded by far more dangerous people who absolutely will follow them through.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/11/2024 06:45

I wonder how long it will take for the idiots who voted for him to realise what they've done.

Thank you. My mum has been brainwashed w qanon & we're UK. SM has really upped the potential for reasonable people to be fooled.. if only there were proper restraints on it.

Right wing ideology? Do you mean people who are educated & have enough common sense to know that a biological male can never be a female & should not be trying to infiltrate women's sports.

Are these "right wing" people very concerned adults who will not stand by & let innocent children be pumped up with hormones & undertake castration & breast mutilation in the name of gender ideology?

Same. Utterly horrifying.

All we can do is hold true to our values and live by them. Be the change we want to see in the world. Stand together, like we did after the race riots earlier in the year, to show solidarity and stand up to dangerous ideologies.

Perfect28 · 06/11/2024 06:46

@Llhaaf what direction? Neither the UK or the us have had left wing leadership?

Unless you're referring to the centrist ground of the Biden administration or the past few months of a mostly centrist labour party?

Or do you mean the direction where we have things like human rights, maternity pay and the equality act.

Are you completely stupid? Putin invaded Ukraine. He wasn’t cornered. Ukraine isn’t a “small and insignificant amount of land…” it’s home to many people. I’m damn sure if the UK was invaded you’d want other countries to help us, for now we’ve got NATO but who knows tor how much longer if Trump is back in charge.

NautilusLionfish · 06/11/2024 06:46

I think the point is he''s a terrible candidate and yet the Democrats are so out of touch they refused to listen to sensible objections and proceeded to anoint a candidate who has now lost to him. This should have been easy. The Democrats need to learn from this. The public do not care about campus politics. The public do not care about celebrity endorsements.

Oh they won't learn. And don't you date take their celebrities away.

As a Brit looking at the world and looking at the US from the outside in, I wonder what on earth makes people vote for someone as inherently nasty as Trump and that people would think its Ok choose that as their leader.

I fear for the world. This is as bad as it gets.

I work with a lot of Americans.
One of the reasons they (some of them) choose Trump is because he has said he will end double taxation on Americans living abroad.

That’s 4 million votes which are concentrated in swing states. These are ordinary people who get a nasty tax bill every year. So residents for the purposes of tax, but not resident for the purposes of getting any of the upsides (eg Home state fees for their kids in their state college).

There is also a group who are tribal

And there is another group of malcontents who want to stick it to the man.

I find Trump odious, btw!

No but he probably will go after other countries like Sweden. He has this in his mind.
