Who actually likes fireworks these days?

I know this is another grumpy mumsnet thread, but does anyone actually enjoy fireworks? I feel like such a grump but I’m not fussed at all by them and haven’t been in years!

@Mademetoxic Why do you think that because I recognise that a dog was showing signs of stress that I don't care about wildlife and livestock?

Just wasn't clear in your post whether you were being serious I think.

I love them. I don't ever do my own but I love the proper displays.

I have 4 dogs.....only one that is bothered by them (thankfully only when she is outside though, she is fine inside with the TV or music on) but she is a rescue that I got aged 2. My other 3 I got at pups and specifically desensitised them to fireworks when they were pups. Don't know if that's why they are fine with them or if it's just luck

One dog actually watches them via the window with tongue hanging out and tail wagging

So stressed then.

No I don't think he's stressed. He wags when happy

He doesn't whine

Equally some nights they are on he's asleep on their floor

As obv a lot of fireworks about at the moment

Not all dogs are scared of fireworks

HappyNewYear2027 · 06/11/2024 10:07

I absolutely love fireworks, my son's school is putting on a display on Friday night and I'm very excited. I do however believe they should be much more strictly controlled, only allowed to be used at organised displays by specialists and not in back gardens. Or alternatively only allow quieter fireworks to be sold to the public and have a limit on numbers

I desensitised mine by playing fireworks to him via Sonos when he was a puppy. I do think that worked as he barks at lots of other loud noises but not fireworks.

Official stats are that about half of dogs are scared and half aren’t. That still a lot of dogs. But then you have all the rest of the wildlife that are. And don’t have humans by them to reassure them/ keep them inside/plat music to. It’s really not just dogs that are affected.

Why do people persist in saying this? It hasn't been once or twice a year for decades now. Pretty much any time - weekend, week night, sometimes before it gets dark - from October to January. Even NYE is not the end of it. My dog was terrified by someone letting off a firework on January the fucking 9th last year (well 2024 so this but feels like last).
I mean, no one is going to stop the inconsiderate shits, but those of you who defend the use of fireworks, please at least have the decency to be honest.

It is obviously different in different places. Here is only this week. It really is very unusual to see or hear fireworks any other time.

Delatron · 06/11/2024 11:32

I don’t understand why we can’t just have silent ones. Some places have introduced laws on this. The visual side of fireworks are far nicer than some loud bangs.

afishcalledvanda · 06/11/2024 11:35

Me!
Sick of all the moaning tbh.

KnittedCardi · 06/11/2024 11:54

I love them, but from my bedroom window! We have a big display on a hill just behind us. We get a fabulous view without leaving the house, with hoards of people, in the cold and dark. Big win.

Ohnonina · 06/11/2024 12:12

I used to like the ones you could use in your own back garden, you know the ones that weren't like a bomb going off! Sparklers and Roman candles and Catherine wheels, that kind of fireworks. I loathe the huge ones we have now, especially at 1am when they're waking me up as seems to happen frequently where I live for weddings. I have a dog but he's never been bothered by them and is now mostly deaf anyway but I don't like that they upset other people's animals but it's mostly that I hate being made to jump out of my skin by the bloody things when I'm least expecting it or I'm asleep.

There was a 4 day wedding one street up from us a few weeks ago and they set off display level fireworks at between 1 and 2am all 4 nights on the run. Obviously there were lots of complaints and the police did visit in the end but not til it was all over and everyone else had been woken up every night and I'm not confident it won't happen again at some point. Someone took photos of the debris left behind and they were enormous fireworks, so dangerous (not to mention inconsiderate) to be setting them off in a residential area and I really wish they could all be banned completely now.

redboxer321 · 06/11/2024 19:45

Anybody being treated for a second night? It's nothing like as bad as last night but some twunts are having a mini whizz bang fest. Oh well, should be all over by the spring.

Thelondonone · 06/11/2024 19:47

I love them. Beautiful, exhiralting make me feel good. Slight concern about environmental impact. I don’t hate dogs but am mildly irritated by people who complain their dogs are upset by them. I’m upset by my neighbours dog barking at 5.30am every day. Pets also bad for environment.

Davros · 06/11/2024 19:49

I love them, especially in the back garden

Oblomov24 · 06/11/2024 20:01

Love them. Going to display on Saturday at cricket club, organised by scouts. Go every year, see people, glass of wine, walk 2 minutes home. Love it.

DilemmaDelilah · 07/11/2024 08:50

I love them. We have spent a few Christmases at Butlins and the firework display on Christmas Eve was a highlight for me. My (boarding) school used to have a huge bonfire and a firework display for Guy Fawkes every year and I loved that.

CindyBirdsong · 07/11/2024 09:03

Love them. This year I could watch the bonfire parade ( bonfire society was resurrected in the village) from my bedroom window, watching the flaming torches from all the societies parade past was amazing.

Normally we have a party with Catherine wheels in the garden.

2 cats, we put them in the bedroom.

chipshopElvis · 07/11/2024 09:24

Me! I love fireworks bonfire night is one of the highlights of the year.

HospitalitySux · 07/11/2024 10:01

I don't particularly like or dislike them, the bangs when unexpected (as in during the day, or middle of the night etc) are unpleasant, the debris and fire risk is not a positive, but we live near a couple of places with shoots and there's a fair few crow scarers as well so to some extent local people and animals are desensitised.

Organised displays would probably be the ideal, but they have their issues as well, the one most local to us didn't go ahead this year, I think the police and council objected because last year the way people parked caused absolute chaos and you could barely get a car through what is the road linking several villages and larger towns because people had double parked all along it, which includes some hairpin bends. Buses & vans were backed up that then completely blocked the road, the detour to get around that is about 15 miles, and the roads to the village with the display were completely blocked, not ideal when we usually need the fire & ambulance services more on Nov 5th, or for people just going about their business.

Merlin321 · 07/11/2024 15:11

Something very professional, timecoded to music, lights etc. Yes, this is technical and creative work, well advertised in terms of time, location and is one set of disruption for many many thousands of viewers, example the London NYE Show.
'Organised Display at the local rugby club/scout hut' £5 to see some random larger than you can buy from ASDA fireworks set off at random whilst. No, this is just lighting a big box and running away.
Loud Fireworks in the Garden like rockets etc, that you can buy from ASDA. No, this is lighting a small box and running away.
Genuine home fireworks like a Catherine Wheel nailed to the bird table and a few sparklers and toasting marshmallows on the firepit. Yes, this is enjoying things in your own space without massively impinging on others.

I would take 'organised display' if it banned the home sale of shit rockets, IF they could all agree on a date to do the same date and people just went to their local one, not what happenened here which was some did last weekend, some did the 5th, some randomly are doing tomorrow then some more are doing this upcoming weekend. Local Parish Councils etc need to decide on the 5th or the closest saturday, and then NYE.

Every random concert doesn't need them at the end.

silent fireworks are pointless. The whole experience is the lights, the sounds and the smell.
Drones are not an appropriate substitute.
No firework display should be set to music or have lasers either, both of those are shit too.

Err you can have the lights without the sound.

No idea why everyone seems to love loud bangs at the expense of the wildlife. But clearly nobody gives a shit as long as they get their crappy fireworks with loud bangs and smells..

TheDefiant · 07/11/2024 20:11

I love them. Love the sound. Love the looks. Love the smell (if I can get close enough). I really love the big huge ones that echo in your ribs.

They are so creative and I love when timed to music too.

Only go to official displays though and none near by this year.

Only downside is the ill effect to others, animals and nature.

I find them totally mindless. Setting fire to a 5 or 10 pound note that bangs. Ooh whoopee!
They should be confined to the nearest Saturday of Nov 5th and no more.

The only fireworks have been from a South Asian family up the road. This is the first night since Saturday that they haven't been letting them off but the night is still young.
Started with loud bangs but the screaming ones were the worst and seemed to go on for ever. They must cost hundreds of pounds, I saw some in a shop years ago and was shocked at the prices then.

Think a lot depends on your usual noise outside. If it's traffic and general hubbub some additional noise hardly matters.
I can hear nothing, so a sudden bang or scream isn't welcome.

Luckily, none of my lovely dogs over the years have even noticed them.
