Who actually likes fireworks these days?

I know this is another grumpy mumsnet thread, but does anyone actually enjoy fireworks? I feel like such a grump but I’m not fussed at all by them and haven’t been in years!

Nope, once you've seen one you've seen them all. They're a waste of money and I would think bad for the environment if council actually concerned about that...

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 05/11/2024 20:37

I love them and I also love animals, including dogs and cats. It would be different if they happened every day or every week but they happen once or twice a year.

I love them. Always have. I am autistic and gather some people think that means I should be upset by them! But they are beautiful and make me happy. I know lots of people loathe them of course, but I enjoy them.

I think NDs can go in funny directions. I've noticed that ADHD can make us like and feel attracted to things that others don't like. Like holes or squeezing spots.

Almost like the aversion goes all the way through to liking again.

DappledThings · 05/11/2024 20:37

Love them. Was just saying tonight at the big county cricket ground ones we were at how much I miss my childhood when all the local sports clubs did them and all the councils.

PreBlendOils · 05/11/2024 20:38

Organised firework displays that meet health and safety standards, fine. It's not my cup of tea but understand that some people like it.

Numptys setting off hand grenades in their back gardens, often while pissed/stoned I fucking hate it. I live in a pretty crap area and we've had 2 whole weeks of it.

I love them.
i also love animals (and although I’ve had 2 dogs -of 5- and one of 7 cats who were scared at first, I’ve supported them to relax and now they watch with me!) and an ex military DH with PTSD before anyone asks.

What you hate ALL dogs? And other animals that will be scared? How awful.

Anyway, I feel sorry for all the scared animals. Maybe we could develop silent fireworks. So you can appreciate them visually without scaring thousands of animals unnecessarily. I have no idea why we still have them.

I’m very lucky that my dog is ok but so many are utterly terrified.

yes can’t stand dogs. all dogs, horrible things.

Ok all dogs are horrible…

Love them. can’t wait for the local display on Saturday. We live in middle of nowhere so don’t hear any at the house and I would never have any at home because we are surrounded by livestock. Organised displays only.

Overrated

I used to love them but they're so much louder than they used to be.

Some twat a couple of houses down from me just let off the super loud ones and the sudden noise really scared me. It must feel so much worse for wildlife, farm animals and pets.

Why do people persist in saying this? It hasn't been once or twice a year for decades now. Pretty much any time - weekend, week night, sometimes before it gets dark - from October to January. Even NYE is not the end of it. My dog was terrified by someone letting off a firework on January the fucking 9th last year (well 2024 so this but feels like last).
I mean, no one is going to stop the inconsiderate shits, but those of you who defend the use of fireworks, please at least have the decency to be honest.

Yes, I still.like them.

Lavender14 · 05/11/2024 20:50

I love them, but for specific occasions and in a planned way somewhere sensible. Not let off at random in a built up area with no warning.

TeenLifeMum · 05/11/2024 20:50

I like them, lots of displays round here all very popular. Ddog is a gun dog and doesn’t react at all (same as every other dog I know in rl except for one, but that one was also scared of the door bell and the owner sneezing).

RoastPotatoConnoisseur · 05/11/2024 20:53

I enjoy them but I do think they should be for organised displays only.

It's funny as only the other day I was saying to my husband how lucky we are that none of our neighbours set off fireworks given that we are a small hamlet made up by a few farms and we have horses, only for one of our neighbours (one of the farmers son of all people!) to set them off tonight with no prior warning right over our heads. I had very distressed horses galloping around risking serious injury and neighbouring farmers also upset as they had left stock out in the field not expecting there to be any fireworks in our little area.

Smartiepants79 · 05/11/2024 20:54

Me.
My family.
The several hundreds of other people at the display i went to recently.
All the displays around us were completely sold out weeks ago.
I’m fed up of all the moaning about to be honest.

username7891 · 05/11/2024 20:54

I love a firework display. My local park used to do the best displays but have stopped them since COVID.

IcyLilacZebra · 05/11/2024 20:55

I like them and will watch them out my window but wouldn't actively pay to go to a display

BottomlessBrunch · 05/11/2024 20:55

Love them

Fireworksforme · 05/11/2024 20:56

What a grumpy bunch there are on MN who just don't understand that humans are so much more vital than dogs and cats. mainly because they don't piss and shit all over streets or gardens.
Lets have louder bangs.

grafittiartist · 05/11/2024 20:56

Love them!
One of my favourite nights of the year.

GameOfJones · 05/11/2024 20:56

I absolutely love them! But if it were up to me I would only allow them at public displays and ban the sale of them to individual households. More for the safety aspect than anything else.

We went to a local display at the weekend and it was fabulous. Everyone there was enjoying it, local stalls were selling food and drinks and it was a lovely community event. Tonight we did sparklers in the garden with DDs. Perfect.
