Who actually likes fireworks these days?

I know this is another grumpy mumsnet thread, but does anyone actually enjoy fireworks? I feel like such a grump but I’m not fussed at all by them and haven’t been in years!

OP posts:

I think they are great from a distance.

I do feel for animals and those with PTSD or Autism and little babies etc.
Torn, but Yes I like them.

PennyCrayon1 · 05/11/2024 23:50

Ruined my favourite pair of boots standing in dog shit the other day.

Dog owners can fuck off with their whinging and just cope to be honest. It’s not like you don’t know bonfire night is coming. Plan accordingly.

yes can’t stand dogs. all dogs, horrible things.

So you like the idea of something being tortured/suffering just because you don’t like them?

I love them, always have. We take our kids to an organised display. We could do them in the back garden but ours is a new build house which backs on to too many gardens. I'd also be concerned about neighbour's pets and we already get people on the estate Facebook group moaning about them every year.

This thread has done a good job of bringing out the MN lowlifes.

Me! I love them, saw an amazing display at the weekend.
I feel sad people are so grumpy about them, like part of our traditions are dying.
Bonfire night with fireworks has been celebrated since the 1600s, and there may have been more animals/horses around at that time.
I've always had pets but if you keep them in, they are usually fine.

Roryno · 06/11/2024 00:06

Well it shouldn’t take arocket scientist to work out that the fireworks nowadays are a lot louder than they were in the 60s/70s/80s…. That’s the issue. And you’d think most people would be able to work out that it’s not how a dog is raised - some are scared, others aren’t…. I’ve had dogs that were terrified and dogs that loved them. My own horse is happily eating in his stable, the horse in the next stable is running round, dripping in sweat absolutely terrified.

Personally I like fireworks, but I think less noisy ones are obviously the way forward. And letting them off in your garden is pretty stupid and selfish.

But I think a few people on here are just trying to be arseholes.

Love them. Went to the next town's display on Saturday night. It was really good.
There were a couple of thousand turned out so I reckon lots of people like fireworks these days.

Maddy70 · 06/11/2024 05:32

Me!!! Beautiful

ZippyDoodle · 06/11/2024 06:32

No, not anymore.

I'm very much into the natural world and wildlife these days and they're just terrible for the environment.

The Blue Cross posted a really distressing video of some horses reacting to fireworks being let off nearby on Instagram the other day. People just don't seem capable of thinking of anyone but themselves. Very sad.

CatamaranViper · 06/11/2024 06:47

I'm so conflicted about them.

Love them, love organised displays, great for the local economy (around here at least), small stalls set out and run by local businesses, the whole town comes together, money is raised which benefits the community. Also they are very well done and a thorough clean up after.

But, we live in a rural town. Lots of wildlife locally and lots of nearby farms. TBF, the farmers never complain (many also attend the display or participate in it). I do feel sad for the wildlife and other animals.

The town is quite good in that we never really hear fireworks go off any other time. Last night I heard maybe a couple of bangs. They do tend to follow and unwritten rule to not do fireworks in the gardens.

Cheesecakeisntcheese · 05/11/2024 23:30

I can’t love them after seeing what they do to local birds. Honestly not being an arse it just saddens me so much.

Doesn’t make you an arse to care about wildlife..

No as we’ve seen on this thread people only seem capable of caring about themselves and their pleasure. Screw the impact on the environment and wildlife. Thousands of terrified animals - fine. It’s not just pesky dogs that everyone on here seems to hate.

People are so selfish. Sadly they are bringing up their selfish attitude to their offspring too.

Utterly ridiculous.

I bet you do many things which are detrimental to a few other people/animals.

I do wonder how many of the people horrified about scared animals are vegan.

Being a vegan doesn't mean you don't do things that are detrimental to other people/animals.
It means, or it often means, that you are trying to do what you see is the right thing.
Forgoing the pleasure - as it is for some people - of fireworks is also doing the right thing and acting in the greater interest.

And FYI, it's not a few other people/animals.

As a matter of fact I am vegan.

Ridiculous and very selfish of you how you feel it's ok for wildlife and other people's pets to be scared for weeks at a time just so you can get your 'enjoyment' for a few minutes.

Humans are so selfish.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2024 09:09

Love them as does my 7yr

I have friends with dogs

Some don't like fireworks which I get can't be nice

But

Most dogs I know aren't bothered

One dog actually watches them via the window with tongue hanging out and tail wagging

redboxer321 · 06/11/2024 09:12

So stressed then.

Delatron · 06/11/2024 09:18

Do you know my dog isn’t scared? But I’m not so stupid and lacking in empathy to know that just because some dogs aren’t scared it doesn’t mean that they are all ok. Thousands aren’t. And all the other wildlife- birds can flee their nests in terror, deers run in to the road and get hit/cause accidents. We’ve heard how scared horses are.

It's not just pets. What about the poor wildlife and livestock ?
