Who actually likes fireworks these days?

I know this is another grumpy mumsnet thread, but does anyone actually enjoy fireworks? I feel like such a grump but I’m not fussed at all by them and haven’t been in years!

Love fireworks. Much prefer organised displays. Don't have an issue with people doing fireworks in their garden as long as it isn't too late.

Money tight thus year so decided to buy a box of fireworks for the DC to watch in the garden, rather than get caught up in buying all the drinks, food, and rides/plastic tack that you get caught up with at the displays.

A lot of organised displays are expensive, or require a car to travel to near us, so it would be a shame to take away the option of garden fireworks for those that have large families or don't have a car.

Love getting together with the family for fireworks at home. So much more relaxed than schlepping across town to a display and then fighting your way out of the car park afterwards.

endofthecorridoor · 05/11/2024 21:28

We love them our town has loads over the year.

Lickthips · 05/11/2024 21:28

I like them. They cause far less disturbance to wildlife than cats and dogs BTW.

Supersimkin7 · 05/11/2024 21:49

I loathe the frozen feet and hanging around between bursts - but watching them from the balcony bench across the London Skyline is the best.

Love them... probably my favourite of the year.

AchillesLastStand · 05/11/2024 21:50

@biedrona signed today. Fireworks are dreadful for all animals and wildlife and also the environment. They release toxic chemicals and pollutants.

Delatron · 05/11/2024 21:50

Thanks - signed. Glad to see so much support. Humans can be so selfish.

NewName24 · 05/11/2024 21:55

Me, I love them.

It has been so beautiful just looking out of my window tonight.

But I love going to events too. I love the food and the coming together of the community and the passing traditions down through the generations.
I also love that they can be a great fundraiser for Community Groups (Scouts, Sports Clubs etc).

Why do people persist in saying this? It hasn't been once or twice a year for decades now. Pretty much any time - weekend, week night, sometimes before it gets dark - from October to January. Even NYE is not the end of it. My dog was terrified by someone letting off a firework on January the fucking 9th last year (well 2024 so this but feels like last).
I mean, no one is going to stop the inconsiderate shits, but those of you who defend the use of fireworks, please at least have the decency to be honest.

I don't know where you live but where I live, it's Bonfire Night and NYE.

Xtraincome · 05/11/2024 22:01

Dog lover here! Bloody love fireworks 🎆 😍

Love a proper bonfire night with fireworks to finish 👌

Growlybear83 · 05/11/2024 22:09

I love fireworks. I used to really enjoy our own displays in the garden when she was little. All of the big displays near us have stopped, but a couple of neighbours who back onto our garden have really impressive fireworks which we can watch from our kitchen. My poor cat has been terrified this year, but was better tonight now thst I've got him a Feliway plug in and some calming biscuits.

minipie · 05/11/2024 22:16

I absolutely love them - especially a big professional display set to music, it just makes me really happy.

I do think there’s a case for limiting sales of fireworks to organised public displays only. Mainly due to the safety aspect.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 05/11/2024 22:25

I love them but organised displays only, where I live there are displays on the seafront so the fireworks are let off from a barge type thing, it's lovely and you can stand anywhere along the beach for a mile or two in each direction , the out of towners all pile in the middle but just along the coast it's quiet, you can sit on the beach with a hot chocolate and have a lovely view. I also think it's good because it keeps the noise mostly away from the residential staff where there are more pets etc

Bazinga007 · 05/11/2024 22:34

I love them, be it a local display or in my back garden.

I don't love fireworks.
My town does way too many of them both publicly, and individually in neighbourhoods sometimes at 2:00 a.m. mostly though before 11:00 p.m..
I've long since got bored of the public ones and the ones in the neighborhood are just loud, startling, annoying, especially when they wake you up at 2:00 a.m..
Talk about money going up in smoke 🙄

clarrylove · 05/11/2024 22:46

I love them! A bit of joy to light up a gloomy month. I've tried to like silent/low-noise fireworks but in just can't. They are too dull and not a sensory exhilaration at all.

SoupDragon · 05/11/2024 22:48

I love them.

The local displays were sold out so plenty of people agree.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 05/11/2024 22:49

Love them. Cycled to the local display with my DS1 on Friday; love the feeling of cycling along in the dark watching other peoples fireworks on the way. Been watching some of the neighbours out the window too.

Yes I love them. But what I really enjoy more is a huge bonfire. A “no reason to be that large” bonfire. The bigger the better. It just looks magnificent somehow. When controlled obviously.

Also we did marshmallows and sparklers and hot chocolate after a display so it’s not all about banging.

doodleschnoodle · 05/11/2024 22:50

I really enjoy organised displays and the kids love them. I do struggle a bit with the impact on animals though. Our dog isn't a huge fan but we don't get much back garden stuff round here anyway. We do tend to go to an organised display once a year though.
