Who actually likes fireworks these days?

I know this is another grumpy mumsnet thread, but does anyone actually enjoy fireworks? I feel like such a grump but I’m not fussed at all by them and haven’t been in years!

Love them and also have a big Maine Coon cat who isn't bothered by them. Helps me through November. Been to 2 this year.

Me! Love them.

I really enjoy fireworks at organised public displays around Bonfire night and New Year's Eve. I think they can be beautiful, especially if set to music. But I don't like people having private fireworks in their gardens and would like them to be better regulated.

Why do people persist in saying this? It hasn't been once or twice a year for decades now. Pretty much any time - weekend, week night, sometimes before it gets dark - from October to January. Even NYE is not the end of it. My dog was terrified by someone letting off a firework on January the fucking 9th last year (well 2024 so this but feels like last).
I mean, no one is going to stop the inconsiderate shits, but those of you who defend the use of fireworks, please at least have the decency to be honest.

It's once or twice a year here.

We used to go to organised displays but now we just have some low noise ones in the back garden as we can do them at a time that suits us when it's dry.

They're quieter than they local pheasant shoots.

I absolutely love them! There has been loads of lovely displays near me and I’ve been really surprised at how many neighbours have set off the most beautiful array of fireworks.

@BiscuitLover3678 ,
MEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I absolutely love fireworks. We had a fantastic time with our boys and their families at the weekend at our local fireworks display. Joyous. 😊

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 05/11/2024 21:02

I mean you've seen one display you've seen them all.

Onelifeonly · 05/11/2024 21:05

I don't think they are intrinsically amazing and, let's face it, you get the same types over and over. Even as a child I preferred the bonfire - back in the days when these were part of it. But I do enjoy the atmosphere being out in a crowd in the dark and cold (not that it has been cold this year), the smell of Autumn and walking through the leaves and mud. It's unlike any other event.

I like them. Also have a dog entirely unbothered by them. Have been feeling like an alien on here lately. Grin

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 05/11/2024 21:07

Hugely dull. Organized displays are much worse than ones at home, mind.

ilovebagpuss · 05/11/2024 21:10

I enjoy them, but I think it should be organised events only. Our recent event had 20 mins of fireworks. I can understand if you live in an area where they are going off all week it must be upsetting for your pets but I don't agree with a blanket ban.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 05/11/2024 21:13

Me. I've just been watching them through the window because I couldn't go to a display this year.

Standin · 05/11/2024 21:15

I love them too. A recent holiday in Spain saw us sitting on the beach at midnight watching the firwework, with thousands of others, as part of the local fiesta.
Amazing experience.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 05/11/2024 21:17

I love them. I love how you can feel the bangs and booms right through your chest. If they get banned I will miss them but I think it'll end up that way, or they'll become silent at least.

I have had scared dogs and scared horses, both of which were equally scared by thunder, there are things you can do to mitigate. Saying that they don't have that many round our way so it's not something they have to deal with often. I feel for those saying they hate them and that they're exposed to them constantly in the darker months, it's just not the reality round here.

I love them, but then I am in East Sussex where bonfire nights run most weekends from beginning of September to end of November!

SomethingFun · 05/11/2024 21:19

I like firework displays, particularly no bang ones which are imho much more fun to watch. But I live somewhere where people set off fireworks all the fucking time. Middle of summer, dead of winter, a y in the day and fireworks are being set off. God knows where people get them from or why they feel the need to always be fireworking. So it’s taken the shine off to be honest as I associate it with knobheads now.

Twilightstarbright · 05/11/2024 21:19

Love them! But at organised displays on sensible days. In fairness, we don’t get many random ones set off where I live.

Jl2014 · 05/11/2024 21:20

I love them

EveryOtherNameTaken · 05/11/2024 21:21

Love them! Battersea Park this year was amazing. The music to go with them, mulled wine and smell of fireworks was total escapism.

Pneumoniabluemonia · 05/11/2024 21:21

Love them at big events. Hate them in small gardens (I’m a bit scared of them at close proximity!)

Elle771 · 05/11/2024 21:21

I don't understand why silent fireworks but allowed at big public displays set to music isn't a thing... would be so much more creative and exciting than random endless bangs in people's back gardens and pets/babies/anyone not a fan of big bangs would be happy, as would people who enjoy a big creative display but it couls be a nice show 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

ArchMemory · 05/11/2024 21:22

Yeah I’m a fan. But I do get weary as Diwali rolls into Guy Fawkes.

Mikalika · 05/11/2024 21:24

Absolutely hate them. An organised display is fine but every other firework going off two weeks before to two weeks after bonfire night is a joke. People with dogs/cats/babies to name a few understand the terror this causes.

Not usually a fun sponge but it’s been a hard night so far!
