Is anyone worried what might happen if Trump wins?

You could move to Scotland or Wales.

Northern Ireland. IWell it did vote Remain. But you could find the right area 🇬🇧 ?

JusteanBiscuits · 05/11/2024 16:03

My major concern over Trump winning is the ideas it will give the racists in this country. All of Tommy's little gang who will see it has free rein to act as they wish because "In America..."

I am truly, honestly scared about Trump getting in. As are all my friends in the US.

NI will be having a border poll at some point with RoI and Ireland has a lot of social unrest due to their government. That wouldn't be a stable move to make.

They are worse, thus there is nowhere to move to.

Move to NI! Politics is great craic here 😂

Yeah. I am a bit sarky sometimes sometimes...

I doubt the border poll will happen soon. Sinn Fein has grown more pragmatic as it has shed the old generation and I can see them being much more patient than a generation ago in order to avoid stirring unrest amongst Loyalists. Also, the outcome of the Brexit negotiations works more in Republican than Loyalist favour as well.

What does the Portland riots have to do with the Democratic party?

Left leaning political movements supported the "mostly peaceful protests"(riots) there. Not saying The Democratic Party involved, part left leaning people were, and probably some registered Dems too, though I obviously acknowledge that's extrapolation

AnotherHotDrink · 05/11/2024 16:38

Well a lot of people in the UK will be happy if he wins as a former Marmite poster on here said she will eventually retire if he does.

My cogent argument is a substantial portion of Trump's supporters are well-meaning people who are uninformed, not well educated, and/or very dim. I don't think this is breaking news.

If you think that the half of the American voters who are smart are voting Harris and the half who are not are dim, then you may be unknowingly one of the dim people. Its really not an intelligent position. There are clearly smart and dim people on both sides.

There are plenty of democrat voters who actually think men can literally be women (terms 'men' and 'women' are undefined by them) and that gender identity ( undefined by them) trumps the importance of sex in all and every situation, even in rape crisis services, prisons and sports. There are people on both sides, those who vote Trump and Harris, who believe crazy shit which has pernicious consequences. Neither side has the smart, critical thinking upper hand here.

CAJIE · 05/11/2024 16:45

Actually I am not sure he has dementia so its unfair to say that. The other day he was speaking and making good sense. He had some brain injuries earlier in his life and it has not been an easy life.Yes he was right to stand down but people are pretty ageist. What about Trump's age?

Outandinbout · 05/11/2024 16:47

AnotherHotDrink · 05/11/2024 13:36

I think it is about having a different type of intelligence.

Some people are very good at picking up certain language and are quite good at memory recall for exams.

Some people may not have the quickest memory recall skills to use the latest/best language and pass exams, yet have far superior critical thinking skills.

See my post above. There are plenty of uncritical thinkers voting for Harris. Just as there are for Trump.

This belief that the other side are just a bit thick or they would agree with you, is what has led to the appallingly polarised state in America.

People need to stop slapping themselves on the back and start listening, really listening, to the other side.

It's all the generals who worked with him in the White House during his presidency that have called him a fascist. They confirmed that he also said that 'Hitler did some good things' and that he wished his generals were like Hitler's generals. General Milley said that Trump was 'fascist to the core'.

The media then asked Kamala Harris if she agreed with what the generals were saying about Trump being a fascist and she said yes.

Trump has said many more insulting and untrue things about Harris.

Oh come on! The recent rally from Trump was widely called a nazi rally by the democrats with lots of photos of how nazis once had a meeting there. Its a shameful way to campaign in a democracy.

Trump is not a fascist, he is not running to rule as a fascist ruler. Personally, I think in a different time and era he would have loved to be a dictator. But then, quite a lot of powerful men would have done this if the chance came along. But he is not in that time or circumstance, he is running as President in a country which has built in an extraordinary amount of checks and balances on the power of the President, as they were hell bent on avoiding anything resembling a monarchy. Trump can never, ever be a fascist leader of America, so this name calling and scaremongering needs to stop.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/11/2024 17:03

I am far more concerned about the reactions of the American public to either Harris or Trump winning than I am about what either will do as president. Every election since 2000 has had some questioning, each one worse than the last, and we've gotten to the point of division and distrust enough that I'm concerned about how it will escalate this time

Really glad you mentioned either winning, @RamblingEclectic - god knows there's enough division as it is - but I honestly wouldn't worry too much

The screamers and spitters will always be with us, especially now they have social media to wind each other up on, but not all of them are going to attend demos even if they could find their way there and ordinary folk who remain unmoved by silly noise will just get on with their lives as they always have

That's the rally where the speakers called Puerto Rico an island of garbage, called Kamala Harris the anti-christ, called Hillary Clinton a 'sick bastard' and Trump promised to “launch the largest deportation program in American history”?

There was blatant racism at this rally. There were certainly some parallels to be made between the 1939 rally and this one.

tallegorical · 05/11/2024 18:31

I borderline want Trump to win just so we can see who's right here.

Many people believe him when he says he won't play nice this time, wants to implement project 25 or whatever it was called, wants to turn the country into some kind of dystopian Christian state, surround himself with yes men with fewer checks and balances compared to last time, rule in a more dictatorial way, make amendments to law to make it more difficult for him to lose next time, pass laws that amount to fascism around people of other nationalities or differences around gender, sexuality etc etc etc .

Some people seem to think none of this is true and is all hot air, it'll be fine, the economy will be better, he'll help reduce the number of wars, he's not a fascist or a dictator and actually he's quite a nice man. Not his fault he's a convicted criminal on multiple counts including sex crimes, he's just a straight talking guy fighting against the mainstream.

Bring it on. Let's see.

ShinyShona · 05/11/2024 19:07

@tallegorical I doubt it's either of those scenarios. I think he is just a small minded bigot who lacks the intellectual capacity to be president and will screw things up because of a lack of competence, just like last time when he told people to inject themselves with bleach during a pandemic. The danger is that unstable regimes will take advantage of a buffoon in the White House abroad and more awful judges will be appointed to the Supreme Court and undermine that institution at home.

Well in reality Vance may get ride off him quite quickly. Or he may go to jail but why are you certain he would do all those things?. Deporting criminals is overdue and he is not on board with project 25 as he repeatedly clarified in the debate and other interviews.

Unstable regimes took advantage with Biden and Harris. Do you know about Venezuela and the wars going on? 🤣🤣🤣 The least they could do was to help get ride of Maduro. Nah too much for me 🤣🤣🤣

"...where the speakers called Puerto Rico an island of garbage"

I can't speak to your other complaints, but with regard to this one. This was a "joke" made by a single comedian entertaining the audience before Trump arrived rather than multiple "speakers". The joke didn't go down too well with the audience.

You might not be aware of the context of this joke. Waste management in Puerto Rico is a serious problem.

For example, here is an article from 2021 about the trash problem in Puerto Rico:

Trash Crisis Leaves Puerto Rico Near ‘the Brink’

Or this more recent article

At what time (GMT) will the matter be sealed?

Also, what are people's gut feeling? The polls say it's nearly 50/50 but which way is it going to tip?

That depends if there is not recounting which if as they are saying is too tight a race would possibly happened. It can be days otherwise 2am we should know in the UK. Polls close at 20.00 in the US.

I do know where Venezuela is but I wouldn't consider trivia as a sign of intelligence like you do. Thinking trivia knowledge is a sign of intelligence is a stupid person's idea of a clever person.
