Is anyone worried what might happen if Trump wins?

Wasn't abortion made illegal during Trump's presidency? For PP saying nothing much happened, that seems like a pretty big one.

No it wasn't - that was a supreme court ruling and it happened when Biden was president.

SecretWitch · 05/11/2024 11:45

Im off to vote soon. Hardly any sleep last night. Have a lovely headache and bouts of nausea. The last time I felt this way was when Gore lost the presidency to GW Bush.

I do have a feeling that Harris is going to win but I almost don't want to say it out loud in case I jinx it!

My understanding is that some states have the National Guard ready to respond to any violence that may occur post election.

Trump was instrumental in the ruling. Let's not play games.

First vote has been cast

I hadn't seen that nooo video in pp before

I've seen the image used in memes, but this is the first time I've ever actually seen the original video.

American here, though thank god, I haven’t lived there for a long time (still vote every election though). It’s going to be bad either way. If he wins, slippery slope for democracy into authoritarianism and very bad for stabilising the hair trigger global political situation (Russia, Israel/Palestine, etc). If he loses, there will be January the 6th all over again.

Personally, I think Harris will win, but I was shocked before when he won. It was so close. Americans are shockingly uncomfortable with a woman in power, even the progressive ones. It goes against a powerful precedent that rattles people. I think there will also be some surprise voters, who vote for Trump simply because he’s white and a man.

In my own family, my mum, who has been a lifelong Democrat, has switched to the Republican Party only in the past year and is presumably voting for Trump. Harris is, I think, too much change for her, even though she’s likely been de facto running the country with staffers while Biden has been sliding into dementia for the past couple years. I think she feels like with Trump she knows what she gets (crazy), but it’s familiar crazy, white, male.

Kamala Harris hasn’t been running anything. That’s for sure.

Have you seen his stance on abortion interviews?

There's a bigger need for abortion in Blue states where they allow creeps into women's spaces, no men there, less need for abortions.

He won before. Doomsday didn't happen.

There weren’t wars in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza/Lebanon, then. The implications of a Trump win are awful for both.

Many are of the opinion that these wars were started because of a weak US under Biden. So really depends and not necessarily a bad thing if he wins.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 05/11/2024 11:52

Trump turned SCOTUS republican with his appointments which led to the Roe v Wade overturn decision.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 05/11/2024 11:53

I cannot imagine a second term for the man. He is a horror show.

tallegorical · 05/11/2024 11:53

If I don't laugh I'll cry, because the man is planning to allow one of his cronies to do utterly bonkers and dangerous stuff like stop vaccinations, stop fluoride in the water... it's going to be a pretty dystopian place

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 05/11/2024 09:34

Of course. It's terrifying. But I'm also really worried about what he and his supporters might do if he loses.

Exactly this.

I'm in the office with my two American colleagues today. They're worried.

oldwhyno · 05/11/2024 11:56

I'm worried if he does, and worried if he doesn't. The US is dangerously polarised by their own electoral system. It's inherent. A win for Harris doesn't solve that, it'll still be there.

dottiehens · 05/11/2024 11:57

Anyway do not even worry apparently the omnipotent revelation that is Kamala will win so just wait and see the utopia unfolding in the next few years. I am still in awe with the integrity we have found in Starmer in the U.K. What is not to love!!!

The world was very different during his last presidency to where we are at today in many many respects.

Yes it is. 4 years of Biden and we now have war in Europe and the middle east

Trump will kowtow to Putin and Netanyahu. The implications for Ukraine and Gaza are terrible.

No. It is now the situation that each State gets to decide what the law should be in their state.

So, for example, in California the abortion laws are very similar to those in the UK. In Oregon you can get an abortion right up until the day of delivery.

In contrast, in somewhere like Texas, yes, abortions are mostly illegal.

I'm not sure the people in Yemen, Somalia & Niger would agree. This a man who campaigned for the torture of prisoners, wants internment camps & shares intelligence with our enemies.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 05/11/2024 12:10

The world had 4 years of a Trump administration and is still here.

Doesn't it also depend on control of the senate and congress and possibly if they can elect a strong speaker?

Of course it is, because what he'll do is pull US backing and money from Ukraine support and there will be a full on war in Europe because Putin will have free reign. Hungary and Belarus will go to Putin's side (they already basically are in all but name). Putin will go for Poland next, and then carry on West. UK, Germany and France will all be paying for the war, maybe some of the Scandi countries too.

Republic of Ireland isn't even in NATO, we could have war literally on our border if Putin decided to invade there, sensing weakness and no US support. And wanting to exploit a divided EU/UK relationship.

The bloke is a moron but surely there's enough shit here to wade through without their bullshit

Last time the people around him did try to prevent him from acting on his worst impulses. None of those people support him now and his team will be people who think like him and will support the dreadful things he is planning. As someone said, it will be Trump with no guard-rails.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 05/11/2024 12:14

I think it's going to be very fraught whatever the outcome and divisions will deepen.

Have you seen his stance on abortion interviews?

Trump has flip flopped on abortion since the 90s. However we all know that he nominated three of the Supreme Court Justices who voted to overturn Roe in 2022.

He called the state level restrictions that followed "a beautiful thing to watch". He is aware that being anti abortion isn't popular and has since said that he won't sign a federal ban. He's also repeatedly refused to say if he would veto a national ban.

Trump says a lot of things. Recently he's been calling himself a protector of women and said that he's going to protect women whether they like it or not.

Trump has been convicted of sexual assault, been accused dozens of times of sexual misconduct and proclaimed that he grabs them by the pussy.

Last year a judge ruled that a rape accusation against Trump was 'substantially true'.

Do you believe everything he says?
