Is anyone worried what might happen if Trump wins?

I think you find it was in 2022. See how informed you are.

But this was only able to happen due to the ultra-conservative, anti-abortion justices that Trump appointed to the Supreme Court during his tenure.

Outandinbout · 05/11/2024 12:15

Well, he has already been President, so we know what will happen. Lots of entertaining ' OMG I can't believe he said /did that' moments and USA will not collapse into anarchy or chaos and WW111 will not start.

It is likely to be crap for Ukraine though as I think Trump said he does not think the USA should support them militarily.

This. Whatever you think about Trump he is a dove, not a hawk.

That's the funniest thing I have read this year.

Super slick sarcasm there.

The world had 4 years of a Trump administration and is still here.

Doesn't it also depend on control of the senate and congress and possibly if they can elect a strong speaker?

The polls, for what they are worth, seem to suggest that will be the republicans, so he would have much more of a hand to do things.

reesewithoutaspoon · 05/11/2024 12:18

He wants to win and stay out of prison. He's not in it to Make America great again. He's in it to save his own arse.
What concerns me more is the people who have helped fund and back his campaign, to whom he now owes a debt.
They haven't backed and funded him to sit back and not get their policies pushed, it's the only reason they have backed him. No one for a minute believes that Trump is a devout Christian, but he's stupid and venal enough to sell out everyone else as long as he's ok.

Wasn't abortion made illegal during Trump's presidency? For PP saying nothing much happened, that seems like a pretty big one.

Abortion is not illegal in the USA. What happened was Roe vs Wade was overturned ( by the courts, not by Trump, but some of the Judges were appointed by Trump according to what is allowed in the USA constitution). This means individual states are again free to decide their own local laws on abortion.

If I don't laugh I'll cry, because the man is planning to allow one of his cronies to do utterly bonkers and dangerous stuff like stop vaccinations, stop fluoride in the water... it's going to be a pretty dystopian place

RFK is going to be in charge of women's health! Apparently he will ban all vaccines so 'hello polio, you've been missed'. He's an absolute nutter.

Ujustcantandwont · 05/11/2024 11:38

The world was very different during his last presidency to where we are at today in many many respects.

This just sounds like a desperate attempt to still believe a Trump presidency will destroy the world, it won't.

I don't like either of the candidates, but lets stop with the world catastrophe hyperbole if Trump wins. Its that sort of thinking that has led to such a divided America.

The Supreme Court had two President Trump appointments who swung the Court in favour of overturning Roe v Wade. I think you should acknowledge that, before telling another poster that they are ill informed.

Nothatgingerpirate · 05/11/2024 12:22

What will happen, exactly?

And it's not if Trump wins, he's gonna win!

Where is the ground for Harris ever becoming President?

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 05/11/2024 12:22

The implications for Ukraine and Gaza are terrible.

Ukraine will be adversely affected but they still have European support - I think Russian has less appetite for conquest that it did prior - it may well be looking for a way to back out gracefully.

Gaza - USA say now they want to stop but keeps selling Israel weapons and pretty much getting ignored and blocking UN sanctions - I think he could kick of a wider war with Iran - strengthen a weakening regime with internal problems there.

He may upset the Chinese enough for them to do something more about Taiwan

Congress declares war in USA - and senate has control over military spending I believe - so I don't know how much actual power he'd have in such international situations.

I do think it a worry about not enough sensible people round him to stop him like last time - but while he'd be a loose cannon on world stage - there are many others on that stage -I suspect he'll cause more issue internally.

stop fluoride in the water

We don't have fluoride in all UK water, may I ask why you are horrified at it's removal?

First vote has been cast

I hadn't seen that nooo video in pp before

Quit the dramas, the first vote was cast weeks ago, via postal voting.

REP22 · 05/11/2024 12:25

I'm really worried. Mostly about if, heaven forbid, he wins, but also the reactions if he doesn't. On the BBC news website last night someone had picked up on a seemingly-throw-away comment that Trump made, which was that if you voted for him this time "you would never need to vote again" (Donald Trump repeats controversial ‘You won’t have to vote any more’ claim | Donald Trump | The Guardian), which I find extremely sinister.

Also, having been in power once before, he now has enemies he will pursue without check or mercy and will be better-prepared as to how to go about it.

I have friends in the US who are so far down the Trump/MAGA rabbit-hole and some of the stuff they talk about is horrifying. That only Trump has stopped babies being aborted at 9 months, appalling racist stuff about what "should happen" to immigrants (obviously only the non-white ones). And these were reasonable people too, before they got sucked in. One even explained away and "justified" the people who turned up at the US Capitol on January 6 2021 complete with a gallows, fully prepared to lynch Mike Pence (Trump's VP) if they'd got their hands on him.

The polls, for what they are worth, seem to suggest that will be the republicans, so he would have much more of a hand to do things.

I've not seen as many polls for those races - it's all focused on main job.

Well - more of a free hand is worrying though maybe there someone in there who eyeing up the top job for next term in republican who can manage him or oppose him - though given last speaker race in senate maybe not.

Damnloginpopup · 05/11/2024 09:36

He won before. Doomsday didn't happen.

The bloke is a moron but surely there's enough shit here to wade through without their bullshit

I get what you mean. Life isn't rosy here either.

BUT I fear what will happen with Ukraine/Russia and the Middle East if he gets in. He doesn't give a shit who he pisses off, he doesn't have a diplomatic bone in his body! He also only cares about the US and not what will happen to the rest of the world.

No it was under Biden.

There were lost opportunities from the Democrats to prevent this, for Obama it was a pre-election promise that he failed to deliver.

The Democrats didn't think reproductive rights were a pressing issue despite the risks that Roe v Wade could be overturned.

I don't think he has the balls to, but it really depends on whether he just wants old USSR countries back or the very long term goal is to defeat the West entirely.

Trump was instrumental in the ruling. Let's not play games.

Yes, lets not play games.

Trump acted completely within the constitution. Whoever was President when the existing Judges retired would have chosen Judges they believed were most aligned to their own views.

If you are unhappy with the outcome, then your ire should be aimed at the system that allows this gaming, rather than the individual President.

Not that outrageous an idea.

Ireland has a land border with a Nato country the UK.

Russia tried to build a huge embassy in Dublin a few years ago, why would it need such a huge embassy for such a tiny populated country?

Simon Coveney

He’s too old. He bangs on about Biden’s age but will be older than he was if he gets this term. God he’s just vile. It’s embarrassing that the US can’t come up with anyone better (see also: UK)

What do you mean?

It was Trump who negotiated a withdrawal of US troops with the Taliban. He reduced troops even though the Taliban continued to attack the government and accepted Al Qaeda into their leadership.

Afghanistan is so peaceful now.
