Do you think being thin will become less desirable now it’s more attainable?

thehighgatevampire · 03/11/2024 07:31

I was just thinking about this, being thin has always been seen as something desirable but not something that everyone could manage for whatever reason but now with weight loss injections it’s something that’s open to many more people.

Things with an element of rarity are always attractive to us but a part of that has now gone wrt to being thin.

just for context I’m what the internet would call mid size and I’d love to be eligible for the injections but I’m not. I could almost definitely lose weight the traditional way but now I know there is an ‘easy’ alternative out there I some how feel cheated in some way because I need to work at it whilst others can get an injection to do it. I know that sounds pathetic but just being honest.

There have been a few threads now recently about the injections and how it's "cheating".
You know you do have to count calories etc on them? You won't just lose weight if you binge eat but take the injections ? I'm not on them but my sister in law is and she calorie counts alongside.

That’s so strange - when I was on them my appetite was simply reduced. So I didn’t need to count calories because there’s no way I would have wanted to eat more than calorie counting would have allowed me to have anyway.

timetodecide2345 · 03/11/2024 09:05

The ozempic look isn't attractive though. You can be slim and look like a gargoyle drug addict!

Dextybooboo · 03/11/2024 09:06

I think someone touched on this earlier but I have been following manjarou users on tiktok and what strikes me with a lot of people who share what they've managed to eat is that diets don't seem to be changing, for me I would have to use the tool to change my eating habits too as as someone said above, if not, when the pens are no longer available it would be so easy to put that weight back on. But it would be fantastic to have the ability to make healthier choices because you're not hungry or fancying a certain food or cramming coke down ur neck because you're exhausted because your dd has had you up 3 nights on the trot 🤣

mondaytosunday · 03/11/2024 09:07

Of course not. Even with little kids if there's one chubby one they get teased and ridiculed. So it may mean those overweight are more looked down on.
And it's not more attainable. Most people can't afford injections, they are not 'magic', you can still be very overweight on them.

HangingOutInRaccoonCity · 03/11/2024 09:08

I think there'll be more judgement against people who are not slim, like they really can't be arsed or are some anti injection weirdos.
Being a healthy weight does imply that you're healthy so would be desirable from a primal perspective.

But you understand you are not atypical or the poster child? Lots of people need to make healthier choices, calorie count, and retrain their habits they don’t have enough suppression to stop them eating calorific items?

anxioussister · 03/11/2024 09:08

I don’t think so at all. We can bang the HAES and Fat acceptance drums to our hearts content. And I’m all for people feeling ok about themselves. But there are some biological imperatives here. Being slim / fit is associated with fertility, health, productivity + survival skills - it’s hard to imagine a world in which we have moved so far away from our animal selves that we no longer prioritise those things in a partner.

for sure there are trends - heroin chic / kardashibums etc etc - but the underlying preference - both to be and to be with - will surely always be for a lithe lean zombie-fighting body..

broccolienthusiast · 03/11/2024 09:08

Slim and fit is more attractive than just plain skinny fat imo

I think if you look at the what I ate today thread on here many many people have changed their diets, I am not sure tiktok is the whole story.

I get your thinking. I'm a great candidate for the injections and have been debating for weeks about arranging a discussion with my GP to learn more about them, but it feels like cheating. Even though it's not. Trust me I've been on every diet going on and off since 18 and am 40 now. I shift a bit and always put extra back on when I eventually fall off the wagon. I'd love to be thin but I know if I did it I would feel like it was because of the injections not because of my hard work.

I keep seeing people that are looking good, who were a bit chunky and automatically put it down to the pens. There's a beautician in our town who sells them at reasonable prices and these are the type that would buy. So yeah I'm definitely guilty of wondering how someone has finally lost the weight and immediately thinking pen. Why I have a problem with it I don't know. Maybe jealousy.

Please don't buy from a beautician.

Life doesn't have to be hard just to deride an arbituary sense of achievement or because you just think it should be. I know this sounds cheesy, but to be successful in losing weight with or without jabs a huge determination of success is how you view and feel about your body. You sound like you feel you don't deserve to be a healthy weight unless you punish your body, but that's not the case, it's not cheating.

I agree that weight will be a class marker.

We will get to the point where we see obese people and assume they can’t afford mounjaro.

Firestorms · 03/11/2024 09:14

kas24 · 03/11/2024 08:56

Where do you get the pens from does anyone have any links please?

https://www.medexpress.co.uk/clinics/weight-loss This is where I get mounjaro from.

There are quite a few other places too - look out for discount codes to make it cheaper.

Being ‘ozempic slim’ will be something different. People on injections can afford to throw money at losing weight. I say this on someone who is on them. I was BMI 29 when I started and have lost almost a stone. My provider will keep prescribing until I’m BMI 25.

You know you can just shift supplier? Even Asda is offering maintence now at 23.

I don't agree sadly. It's not just healthiness that is lionised - it's a skeletal figure.

I'm aware of friends who have been told how great they look when in medical crisis eg cancer treatment, thyroid dysfunction etc.

My mum is dying of cancer. She has always been slim but now losing progressively more weight. She looks skeletal but she said to me yesterday, it's better than getting fat.

Greentrilby · 03/11/2024 09:19

The beautician in my local town is selling the jabs. She’s also a nurse practitioner so is able to do so legally. I think a lot of ex nursing staff who have set themselves up as small businesses doing fillers etc are now offering the jabs. I don’t think this is any more dangerous than buying online from a warehouse where there is a faceless medic.

curious79 · 03/11/2024 09:20

Not a chance, not least of all because:

  • on average most people are so ridden with side effects that they abandon ozempic after two months so there will still be plenty of overweight folks
  • People pack the weight on if they come off it unless they have developed an incredible routine and will power while on it
  • most can’t afford it. It will be the new differentiator between haves and have nots

That’s nonsense on the first two points, the first one as clearly the overwhelming majority don’t come off after two months, and secondly as you can stay on for life,😂

Interesting on the side effects - is that true for most people?

I like being 'thin' because I like how I look in clothes and can't stand the feeling of being wobbly. I feel like myself when I'm lean, I couldn't give a monkeys about how anyone else views me.

There are so many of these posts, it just goes to show how warped some of the thinking is around weight, particularly from a (probably small but vocal) faction of overweight people. Some of them sound like something out of a 90s teen high school film going on about 'skinnies'.

ComingBackHome · 03/11/2024 09:23

The obesity rate has gone down in the US for the first time ever. They reckon it’s linked to those injections.

I think, in time, being thin will become the norm again and being overweight or obese will be treated as an illness rather than lack of willpower etc…. It will also probably be ‘treated’ earlier.

And then we’ll concentrate on something else as a sign of ‘something to attain’ or beauty.

HonestPayforHonestWork · 03/11/2024 09:23

Btw for those saying once the generics are out MJ will come down in price, that isn’t expected to happen until 2039 so you’re looking at roughly a cost of £35k between now and then. Obviously if you can afford that great, but many can’t afford to be on it long-term.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 03/11/2024 09:24

All that injections do is level the playing field so people who take them can now lose weight by putting in the same hard work as you would have to.

I saw, a very annoying, influencer saying something about doesn't matter what she wears because ' the best outfit is being thin and feeling confident'. I agree, and I know that makes me sound shallow and a bit pathetic.

Sorry to spoil your glee that at least people are suffering for their alleged quick fix, but I haven’t had any side effects
