There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

Likewise Wallaw.
The undocumented immigrants are going to be the number one target as soon as he puts his fat arse down in the Oval Office. Logistically and financially they can't round up or deport the numbers of undocumented people they want to, so they will go for the low hanging fruit - people who are already in the system and easily identified.

I'm only dipping in and out of MSM news at the moment. Can't bear seeing Trump's grinning face or seeing names like Steven Miller and Roger Stone popping up again. Going to make my Christmas cake today and watch some trashy tv tonight!

That seems exactly the right kind of evening under the circumstances (I recommend Rivals!)

I listened to this yesterday and found it somewhat comforting and quite validating.

Just listening to The Rest is Money this morning, they’re talking around the financial side of things, who Trump is likely to appoint to Treasury, etc.

This is being shared on twitter

So it begins. MAGA is about to find out how tariffs actually work first hand.

I feel silly. That's how I thought tariffs worked too. Is there an explainer for economic illiterates like me?

BestIsWest · 08/11/2024 10:22

The importer pays the tariff but it has the knock on effect of making the exporter’s goods more expensive in that country so they lose business or have to cut their prices to offset the tariffs. At least that’s how I understand it.

Edited

Correct. The importer either has to eat the tariff or raise the price of the goods before selling them on, so they are inflationary.

Import Fees: Who Pays Tariffs?

Tariffs always seem to be on the mind lately. New tariffs being imposed, old tariffs being renegotiated, tariffs as a good thing, tariffs as a bad thing… ...But who has to pay all these tariffs? How do you even know what goods are subject to tariffs i...

EasternStandard · 08/11/2024 10:28

A few people I have been listening to (mostly BBC WS, Times Radio and R4) have talked about Trump using tariffs as a way to get people to do something else. So threaten with tariffs and then say stop your illegal migration for example

China may be a bit different. I have been thinking about another factor though which is I see so many posts saying we outsource our consumption to China, or that we should lower what we buy from there. The underlining theme is generally it's not a good thing.

The only way you achieve what is wanted in those post is by price, it doesn't work just to say hey be mindful and don't order that

So given that tension between two things, do people still prefer lower import of Chinese goods?

CaveMum · 08/11/2024 10:49

Listening to TRIM, Peston says that, from talking to those who know Trump, everything is a negotiation. So expect the Tariff stuff to change, not necessarily go away but if he thinks he can cut a deal that benefits him he will.

Peston also points out that if iPhones go up 60% in price then you can be damn sure there will be pushback! A lot of US manufacturers import parts from China for goods they make in the States, so those businesses will push back too.

EasternStandard · 08/11/2024 10:51

I think people might post stuff like we should stop buying so much from China, I've seen it frequently on mn

But the reality here is more likely we don't want to pay more for stuff, that's the only way you achieve that though

In the US it might be a bit different, but price will be a factor

I am sure that knowing what a woman is gives comfort when women have to listen to this four word slogan “Your body, my choice.” Angry

What are you so angry about?

It is the fault of the democrats that this gift was given to Trump. People did vote on this issue. There were moms who are want their daughters to have the ability to be athletes, Biden took steps to remove title IX on the first day of his Presidency because he doesn't think females should have equal opportunities in Sport for goodness sake.

And there are people who objected to the male trans activist Rachel Lavine holding a public health position who was lobbying for the removal of age limits for gender surgery encouraging gay and autistic kids to remove healthy body parts despite mounting evidence of detransitioners.

I'm no fan of Trump but he has just appointed a female Chief of Staff so I think the suggestion that women should be kept in the kitchen is missing the mark.

Pretending that these issues were not an issue or should be ignored because Trump is worse for women is a huge and very arrogant mistake to make.

The Democrats should take heed, as should the Labour Party here.

DuncinToffee · 08/11/2024 11:12

No, it's the fault of the people voting for Trump

BustingBaoBun · 08/11/2024 11:17

'Your body, my choice' is trending everywhere. And at a Texas Uni there are men there holding placards saying they own women now. And 'women are property'

This made me laugh

What borders on stupidity?

Mexico and Canada

EasternStandard · 08/11/2024 11:42

Nevada called for Trump, the first time it's Republican in twenty years

He may get a clean sweep of swing states, I did not think that with the polls as they were, especially the Iowa one later on

I was listening to R4 I think and Megyn Kelly (I googled for correct spelling I'm not a viewer) talked about viewings for CNN on election night at 4.7m. Her show had 4.1m for the fraction of the cost.

A wider point about the threat to legacy media was also made

So you are not prepared to consider the anti women Democrat policies that made some people vote Trump for what they saw as the better alternative?

You should perhaps listen to the The Rest Is Politics, particularly Mooch on these issues. He says they mattered to voters, particularly to swing voters.

Failing to listen , in the face of how the public has actually voted, will ensure that the Democrats remain unelectable.

While they consider to peddle an anti -science/ anti woman trans agenda that lies on a 'the earth is flat' level that men can be woman they will remain unelectable. Humans cannot change sex. That is a fundamental truth. That they are prepared to lie and say that women can have penises means they can't be trusted to tell the truth about any other issue. They have a man who claims to be women trying to reduce the age for children to have their genitals to be removed ffs.

That's on MAGA scale of bat shit whether you are prepared to accept it or not.

DuncinToffee · 08/11/2024 11:57

No, they voted for Trump and his policies.

I don't care if it was throught gritted teeth whilst holding their noses or to protest against the so called anti women policies.

They voted for Trump, nobody forced them, they should own that vote.

I care about women's rights, I care about single spaces, I care about women's sport, I care about bodily autonomy, I care about access to medical care so I wouldn't vote Trump.

BustingBaoBun · 08/11/2024 12:00

^^ This. It is not one single issue, i.e. trans rights.

That has barely been mentioned in post mortems as to why Democrats lost.

DuncinToffee · 08/11/2024 12:07

This is what they voted for

https://x.com/highbrow_nobrow/status/1854686762431299819

"We're gonna deport a lot of people, 10 million people and growing - anchor babies, their parents, their grandparents.
We're gonna put kids in cages. It's gonna be glorious."

-Benny Johnson, linked to Russian disinfo, with Mike Davis, a possible Trump AG.

oh dear Duncin. There really is no helping you is there.

If you maintain the position that people can't vote for a least worst option and you don't hold the Democrats to account for their policies that lost votes then you are completely blind to how politics works.

The Democrats have no chance in 4 years if they won't address the reasons that voters are dissatisfied with their agenda.

You are calling millions of voters idiots and bigots because you think that the Democrats were offering them something they felt was better. They didn't.

That is what the democrats have to address not just keep slinging mud.

BustingBaoBun · 08/11/2024 12:32

Talking of 'slinging mud'.... that is what the whole of the Trump campaign was about. Unfortunately people who were too stupid or just not interested loved his vitriol.

Let's see how this 4 years go... that's all I can say.

A lot of political commentators are talking about it.

Some posters on this thread are refusing to accept it.

Trumps tag line was

"Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you"

He probably doesn't give two hoots about any form of women's rights but he could see this was a vote winner. Why didn't the Democrats understand that and why do some of them continue to fail to understand that?

Is the ideology so deeply embedded that they can't see that this lie is harming their cause?

BustingBaoBun · 08/11/2024 12:42

A great statement from the Obamas. Gracious and heartfelt.

I never heard that tagline. Not once. And I was following both campaigns closely. A day didn't go by when I did not catch up with what was going on.

He probably doesn't give two hoots about any form of women's rights but he could see this was a vote winner

I agree. He doesn't give two hoots about women. In fact he shows disdain for them a lot of the time.

I presume you are saying that Democrats should lie and fight as dirty as he did with his rhetoric?
