There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

Anyone want to take a wager on JDV being dropped before January and being replaced with Don Jr?

I think Don Jr might be less horrific. But can Trump change who he has for VP at this point? People presumably voted for Vance as well as Trump?

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/11/2024 18:50

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime I dunno. I mean, it happened in House of Cards (wife rather than son) and I guess one of them has watched it so it's probably within the realms of possibility. And who's going to stop him? They sure ain't going to rerun the election...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/11/2024 18:53

Well, Vance might have a word or two about it...

Saw this on Xwitter.

Biden should resign so Harris becomes 47 and Donald has to throw out all his 47 swag.

If I remember correctly, and nothing has changed, technically one of the differences between US elections and UK elections is who you vote for. In the UK technically you vote for the person and in the US for the party. So that would suggest that Vance can be swapped out for DT Jr.

Is that not the other way round in General Elections at least? You vote for the Labour party, and if elected the leader of that part becomes Prime Minister. In the US you vote for members of Congress, Senators and also the person you want to be President.

No. That's why you don't officially have to have a by election if an MP crosses the floor - because they were voted in as a person who happens to be in a political party.

Yes, you vote for the MPs - the individual person who you want to represent your constituency. And the party with the most MPs becomes the government. And the leader of that party becomes Prime Minister by virtue only of them leading the winning party not because anyone specifically voted for them to hold the role of Prime Minister (though his constituents will have voted for him to be their MP). Whereas in the US they have voting for Congress and then separate to that voting for an individual - the President. Who now would be chosen by one of the main parties to run as their representative but in the very beginning (Washington) was unaffiliated.

I think we are talking at cross purposes - agreeing but disagreeing! But there is a big difference between the role of Prime Minister (or first minister) and that of President. A more technical equivalent to a Prime Minister in America would be the majority leaders in Congress, although in practice they don't actually have anything like as much power/status (Who here has heard of Steve Scalise). So in reality the PM and President are comparable but they are different roles.

Talkinpeace · 07/11/2024 20:51

If the US president resigns / dies / is assassinated the election schedule remains unchanged. The rules of succession kick in.

Cannot see Vance letting a young healthy Trump get in his way.

I think the reverse might be more likely. MAGA has to live on after Trump who has now served his purpose.

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/11/2024 20:52

My thinking was DT snr does 4 years, passes to DT jnr (with or without an election) for 12 years by which time Baron is old enough to reign for the rest of his life. Simples.

I actually think this will be what the administration will aim for. Straight from the playbooks of North Korea and Russia.

I've said it upthread, but I feel this might have been the last free and fair, truly democratic election in America.

A bought and paid for Supreme Court, a rudderless, soulless, moral-free, self-serving criminal with Presidential immunity, a party completely powerless to disobey and a determination to never lose power?

Democracy will not survive.

I do hope you are wrong!

Susie Wiles appointed as Trump’s Chief of Staff. This reassures me a bit, she is experienced and well versed in traditional political operations.

And had no compunction about running the campaign for a clearly unfit, demented, fascist-wannabe who has made no secret of his desire to dismantle all the norms, checks and balances of government. There is no point in trying to soothe ourselves with normalcy.

He has repeatedly told us loud and clear what kind of president he plans on being.

BruceAndNosh · 08/11/2024 05:51

Trump claimed he MUST have won in 2020 because he got even more votes than in 2016. 74million v 65 million.
This year he got 73 million. So people didn't flock to him, but 12m fewer voted Democrat in 2024 v 2020
Considering how hard both sides worked to push voter registration, it's interesting that overall voter engagement has dropped.

If true, this is just... unbelievable

Please don't let him bring back the White Nationalist Stephen Miller. I find him more creepy and more revolting than Vance.and that's saying something.

Wasn't he responsible for forced hysterectomies in one of the detention centres for immigrants?

Spandauer · 08/11/2024 08:36

Likewise Wallaw.
The undocumented immigrants are going to be the number one target as soon as he puts his fat arse down in the Oval Office. Logistically and financially they can't round up or deport the numbers of undocumented people they want to, so they will go for the low hanging fruit - people who are already in the system and easily identified.

I'm only dipping in and out of MSM news at the moment. Can't bear seeing Trump's grinning face or seeing names like Steven Miller and Roger Stone popping up again. Going to make my Christmas cake today and watch some trashy tv tonight!

So it begins. MAGA is about to find out how tariffs actually work first hand.

The same level of economic illiteracy played a big part in the Brexit vote.

Me too. I have watched the least news programmes in the last few days than I ever have in the last four years. I just cannot put myself through it

I do want to thank Eddie Redmayne for his help. The new Day of the Jackal, six parter, is absolutely gripping, classy and exciting. It's kept me away from the news, thank you Eddie 😂

DuncinToffee · 08/11/2024 09:27

Day of the Jackal is on my to watch list now I have finished Ludwig and the Devil's hour
