Hands Across The Water - Trump thread #135

There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

I honestly can't see Trump serving the full 4 years. There's no way both his body and his already crumbling mind can last that long

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/11/2024 13:58

I am not entirely confident there will be a 2028 election.

I desperately want him to. I'll put up with his accordion hands, rambling twaddle and all of that... anything to avoid Vance.

They propped up Reagan for quite a while didn't they? I can sort of imagine Trump being kept behind a glass screen (like an orange Barbie in a box) and just wheeled out to smile and wave as necessary. His signature is already illegible so he'll be able to sign things with a black Sharpie gaffer-taped to his hand.

I am wondering how Melania is going to cope with this. She never liked the whole thing first time round ("Who gives a fuck about Christmas stuff"... her words) and her 'Be Best' and whose speech is she going to plagiarise this time, given she used Michelle Obama's just about word for word last time.

I don't think we will see much of her.

CaveMum · 06/11/2024 14:15

Look, let’s take the next few days to be sad/angry but then we need to channel our inner Bartlett with “What’s next?”

It’s now about holding the GOP to account, and looking out for the 2028 Democrat candidate to take Vance on.

The latest TRIP podcast has dropped, it’s the last hour of their coverage overnight. I’m listening now and poor Marina got very emotional talking about what this now means for women and their rights in the US.

I’m sure it will also include the discussion they had about how 4 of them got it so wrong.

His convictions will shortly be history. His upcoming trials will be cancelled and any investigations suppressed. GA will have a helluva time proceeding with their state case and he will never be sentenced in NY. He is going to rain retribution on his 'enemies' and the outlook for non-citizens, women, and the poor is dire. He and his rich pals will run roughshod over our economy. The world at large will be left to fend for itself. Immigrants and non-citizens will be subjected to what in 'olden times' would have been termed a pogrom.

On a purely personal level and practically speaking, DH and I will survive the next 4 years. I'm post-menopausal, we own our home, we're not 'other', we are financially secure. And we live in a red county in a very blue state. We have room for a cow or two, a hog, and a vegetable garden (I'm only half kidding about that) . But then again, I suppose there were Germans who said the same thing in 1933 and we all know how that turned out even for the ones like us who thought they'd be fine, don't we? At this point the parallels between Hitler's rise to power and Trump's are actually frightening.

Ben Franklin said "You have your Republic, if you can keep it". Well, apparently we can't. It may have taken us 248 years to wreck it, but it was nice while it lasted.

Don't ask me 'how this could happen'. I don't know.

Today I'm drawing the drapes and ignoring the world.

Well said. I feel the same.

Devastated for our children who will be the ones to inherit this unholy mess.

I'm getting the feeling here this morning that people don't quite understand yet the implications for Europe and the UK.

Sending you hugs and the offer of the spare room if you feel the need to escape @AcrossthePond55.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/11/2024 14:24

AtP55, you have my sympathy. Hands across the water, indeed.

What's going to be hard to stomach is the gloating Hitlerjugend types who will turn up on every thread for a while (as they have here and no doubt will again) rejoicing in fascism successful.

Talkinpeace · 06/11/2024 14:26

"The rest is politics" is unedited navel gazing by two rich English men who WILL NOT step outside their bubble to understand how they got it wrong.
They were offered the chance many many times before the vote
but actively chose not to have their views challenged.

Vance is a threat.
The Democratic party are in absolute denial (as per speakers on R4 and all SM sources)
46% of women voted for Trump

Hopefully between now and January some growing up will happen
by politicians all over te place

Trump is a nightmare of a man but I don’t think he is interested in reenacting the Nazi regime in Germany Why do people keep saying this.

isteppedintoanavalanche · 06/11/2024 14:36

This is the first stitch being unpicked from how democracy in America will unravel. No guardrails. Immunity from prosecution. The constitution as we know it will not surivive a president with unchecked power and absolutely no regard for it.

America does not and never had a divine right to democracy. It needed to be protected.

I was quoting Sinclair Lewis back in 2016, but here goes again: "“When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross”

That was the last democratic, free, fair and transparent presidential election.

Grrrpredictivetex · 06/11/2024 14:42

So 4 years ago I put this on Facebook. Seems not much has changed.
Feeling very sad and frustrated.

Re what to expect next... Not so much about specifics but about the management via media.

Seared into my memory from the day Roe v Wade was struck down is that, within minutes, social media was chockers with messaging that when the Right does something that hurts people, it's the Left's fault for not stopping them hard enough.

It chimed so very closely with the Rules of Misogyny: that when a man does something bad, it's a woman's fault.

So now it's a pattern I can't unsee.

I expect to see a lot more of that.

I've also realised that, for some actors, it's not that they don't care that the population are angry with their actions, and nor do they try to minimise the anger: they're actively pleased at generating the anger because they are confident they will be able to redirect it onto a scapegoat they want to target. So it becomes a win-win.

It can be direct, like anger over loss of abortion rights in the US. Or it can be indirect, like degrading public services and living conditions, then relying on the pressure cooker exploding when you offer your chosen scapegoat.

I want to try to stay alert when I notice "I'm getting feelings of anger", and pay attention to a) where the feeling is coming from, and b) who is trying to direct it.

Thanks for such a great post.

I hate myself for how I'm feeling at the moment. DH said last night that if America votes for Trump again, this time knowing EXACTLY who he is, then all his liberal, generous, understanding, democratic ideals will be replaced with a flash of "Well, fuck you. Fuck you all. You deserve everything you get."

I felt exactly that way this morning. Impotent anger and hopelessness. It's not who either of us are or what either of us believe. Confessing it here, I suppose.

PerkingFaintly · 06/11/2024 16:12

<chinks Brew of solidarity>

Please don't hate yourself! I think trying not to have natural human reactions isn't a winner. Of course we're going to have feelings, it's what makes us human.

I believe it's what we do with those feelings, that matters.

I'm trying to spend a bit of time recognising my own feelings, and taking stock of where they come from and who is trying to nudge me along what path.

It's the only way I can think of to take back my power.

Bagpussnotbothered · 06/11/2024 16:29

Deep breath.

We can't control what happens in America (the choice and the outcome are both up to them), but we can step up efforts to combat climate change and support Ukraine.

So long, NATO. It had a good run.

If I were still of childbearing age, there's no way I would risk booking a Disneyland holiday to Orlando in case I discovered i was pregnant. You don't want to risk a miscarriage in Florida...

This is a really good point, not just regarding miscarriage but with any complication past 6 weeks you would not be guaranteed healthcare that prioritised your survival over the fetus's. And under 6 weeks, could you prove that in the middle of a medical emergency? Food for thought for the hundreds of thousands of Brits who visit Florida every year.

This is a great post. I have felt quite out of sorts today, bordering on depressed about all of it. I will allow myself just one day to feel like this.
Tomorrow is another day.

Chinks 🍷with everyone on here. (please note, has to be wine, not tea 🤣)

Thank you all for your sanity.

21 yo Dd called me feeling distressed about the result and I assured her that it was normal to feel as she did. However, I suggested that, depending on the US actions under Trump, she may have to consider the things that are important to her and how she can advocate and make a difference.

if anyone is interested, Dan Snow’s daily podcast today is about conspiracy theories in particular the “Clinton Bodycount” and QAnon. It’s with Gabriel Gstehouse, who did the BBC Coming Storm podcast.

https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/dan-snows-history-hit/id1042631089?i=1000674897660

I've been listening to the Coming Storm podcast.

Highly recommended but it's scary.
