Hands Across The Water - Trump thread #135

There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

Like BruceandNosh, I think it's a morning to be outside and away from any postmortem gloom - got a lot of leaves to rake and into the road for the sucky machine to hoover up. 🧹🍁🍂🍁

I’m off to listen to Katty Kay and Mooch as their latest podcast just dropped.

It's not that simple though.

Critical thought requires the Democrats to engage a bit of introspection.

There are clearly reasons that voters find a convicted felon more aligned with theirs than the Democrats.

So sure teach your children to think critically but also not to be so partisan that you can't engage with the thought process of those whose opinions don't align with yours. I think this was a fatal mistake for the Democrats. Calling Trump names and acting righteous clearly wasn't enough to win hearts and minds.

I hope that now they will actually engage with the reasons for voter dissatisfaction.

It isn't as simple as that post, either.

People can only think critically about information they have. US voters are a media landscape where they have been intentionally fed enormous amounts of disinformation. Just as one example among many, Elon Musk X/Twitter has been personally amplifying it on X/Twitter because he can.

So "reasons for voter dissatisfaction" can include believing that Haitians can gain citizenship within 6 months and vote multiple times, because they've been shown a video claiming this.

But the video is fake, and not only fake but part of an operation by a hostile state (Russia).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9vnyl2jnpjo

A failure to acknowledge that this is happening, and the media landscape that voters experience, is exceptionally dangerous.

The seal of the FBI

US officials say Russians behind fake 'Haitian voters' video

The FBI and two other security agencies say the video is an attempt to interfere in the upcoming presidential election.

Oh I don't dispute that.

But one major problem for the Democrats when it comes to fake news is their insistence that men who say they are women ARE women. We all know this isn't true.

We live in a post truth age. Navigating that is tricky.

Talkinpeace · 06/11/2024 10:34

@lifeturnsonadime Sadly yes.
Levine standing on a podium speaking clearly provable lies.
Volleyball Mom's seeing boys on girls teams
Newspapers printing that rapists are women

Then when they ask us to believe them on the economy we know they lied on other stuff.

PerkingFaintly · 06/11/2024 10:36

But interestingly, lying doesn't seem turn into a problem for Republicans.

Trump spent 4 years on daily public show, lying publicly and getting caught in it almost every day.

Really pointless shit, like: "I had a really good call with the Mexican president", but the Mexican president and all US officials immediately say "Nope, no call."

We all know what he says isn't true.

And it's not some handwavy generalisation "Republicans believe..." like voters are a hive mind. It's the actual person whose name is on the ballot paper, and he shows us his behaviour himself.

The media landscape means a lot of voters don't get shown this behaviour – or if it's mentioned at all it's minimised... and then the ranting fury of the Tucker Carlsons, etc, swivels back onto their two-minute hate for whoever their today's target is.

I’m back. Highly recommend listening to the TRIP US episode, they were recording just as Fox called PA for Trump.

@CaveMum I can't see your other post but did you say 3 out of 4 on that podcast were saying Harris?

Were they surprised to get it wrong?

The polls seem out, even the popular vote poll

lifeturnsonadime · 06/11/2024 10:45

@PerkingFaintly both sides are based on a foundation of lies.

And we call it Democracy.

It's appalling.

PerkingFaintly · 06/11/2024 10:47

X-posted with you, talkinpeace, and you bring up another good example.

Trump committing multiple sexual assualts doesn't seem to cause him difficulties among people who declare they are very worried about rapists being mislabelled.

So clearly there's more going on here than the apparent surface issues.

lifeturnsonadime · 06/11/2024 10:48

I listened to it last night and this morning.

Rory Stewart was genuinely surprised but he seemed to admit it might have been based on his ideological beliefs rather than evidence.

Dominic Sanbrook called it.

Marina Hynd was hopeful but resigned.

The only person I'm not sure about is Alastair Stewart. But I don't think he was convinced anyway.

As @lifeturnsonadime says only Dominic Sandbrook called it right.

The videos will still be on YouTube and they were having the “why did we get this so wrong” chat around 8.30am our time so you can watch that part back.

CaveMum · 06/11/2024 10:55

Also should add that (confusingly) the TRIP US podcast I posted is separate to the TRIP YouTube feed.

Katty Kay is contracted to the BBC so had to do their election coverage so it was Mooch, plus Alistair, Rory, Marina and Dominic on YouTube.

Both podcasts will be putting out numerous editions this week. Kathy Kay said she and Mooch are going to put out another one tonight (overnight for UK listeners) to try and digest what has happened.

Harris lost votes compared to Biden in
EVERY county

Her message did not cut through
to soccer moms, to working dads
of any hue.

Less listening to kids in scarves on Ivy League campuses time.

Less listening to kids in scarves on Ivy League campuses time.

Exactly this. Biden ran as a moderate, centrist Democrat. Then he turned over policy making to the far left of his party, which turned out to be unpopular for many issues.

boatyardblues · 06/11/2024 12:27

I listened to the Mooch/Katty Kay podcast earlier & they said something about the elites with college degrees, the media etc. I think that SNL sketch with Maya Rudolph was ill-judged in hindsight. It seemed smug and cosy, like they thought they had it in the bag. That kind of coverage will have turned people off if they were wavering about voting for Harris.

goingtohellinahandcart · 06/11/2024 12:31

We can hope that Trump does a Boris and gives the republican party the reputation Boris gave the conservatives

Although he has already been president

Although he has already been president

But literally every single member of his Administration has distanced themselves from him (all but one I think) so he can pack his Cabinet with those as incendiary as him.

Hands Across The Water - Trump thread #135
goingtohellinahandcart · 06/11/2024 12:48

True but this time he seems more out of control.

If the republican is hoping to get rid of him by claiming he is unfit and put Vance in his place now they no longer need him I don't think his most ardent supporters would accept that easily

EasternStandard · 06/11/2024 12:51

It's hard to predict where they'll be after his term. I think they would have found it harder to regroup if he had lost though

DeeVee · 06/11/2024 13:11

I commented above:
"When I checked the betting odds - Trump is the favourite by a wide margin. Despite the criticism of Trump a huge swathe of people are voting for him. Many have felt their views have been ignored over the years and for good or ill he has latched on to this."

Wallaw commented in reply

"No serious political analyst is putting stock in the betting markets as a predictor."

Well the bookies got it right and the political analysts got it wrong!

Allan Lichtman will have to hang up his keys

Nate Silver got it right though

bluecomputerscreen · 06/11/2024 13:42

kudos to kamala harris - she had a tough job as incumbent (sort of)
she only had a short time to campain
plus she is a woman <shock>
of colour <shock>
plus some of the policies (title IX for example) are a difficult sell

CaveMum · 06/11/2024 13:49

if anyone is interested, Dan Snow’s daily podcast today is about conspiracy theories in particular the “Clinton Bodycount” and QAnon. It’s with Gabriel Gstehouse, who did the BBC Coming Storm podcast.

So my friends, it appears we are now in it for another 4 years. Lord, CaveBaby will be in secondary school by the time the 2028 Election comes round, though we all know that the campaign starts…
