Hands Across The Water - Trump thread #135

There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

Wtf has America done.

The BBC is acting as though he had won, despite him not making the 270 yet. We knew he would call early, if when all the ballots are counted this flips, it's buying into Trumps narratives- that's seriously pissing me off. We could say we've won at this point, it doesn't make it true.

Llttledrummergirl · 06/11/2024 08:16

And why the hell are world leaders jumping on his bandwagon. What happened to every vote counts?

Spandauer · 06/11/2024 08:18

violetchachki · 06/11/2024 08:01

It's interesting - AP still hasn't called it.

  • We’re awaiting late vote updates from Michigan’s Wayne County and Wisconsin’s Milwaukee County, two Democratic strongholds that present Harris’ only path to win either state. The races are too early to call.
  • What states are left to be called? Alaska, Arizona, two districts in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada and Wisconsin.

Harris seems increasingly unlikely to win any of the swing states left to announce. 😔

Surely the Constitution can’t be changed?

Surely the Constitution can’t be changed?

If the GOP end up controlling all 3 arms of government and a SC majority then there will be no checks and balances. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The best that can be hoped for now is a Democrat majority House of Representatives.

It can be amended, and with no one to stop him he can 'amend' it as much as he wants (or is told to).

Willowkins · 06/11/2024 08:27

I don't know a lot about American politics but I guess they'd just have to repeal the 22nd amendment to the constitution.

Vance isn't a solution.

Agreed. In a lot of ways he’s more dangerous as he can theoretically do more than 8 years if Trump steps down. At least my understanding is that they can only be ELECTED twice, I could be wrong.

It’s a shame as at one stage he was actually a relatively moderate Republican and spoke out against Trump.

BruceAndNosh · 06/11/2024 08:53

Right. I'm off to dig my garden. The anger will get those shrubs planted in double quick time.

Susie Dent from Countdown with her Word of the Day, sums it up for me

Word of the day is ‘recrudescence’ (17th century): the return of something terrible after a time of reprieve.

CaveMum · 06/11/2024 08:59

Dominic Sandbrook on the TRIP feed called it, he was the only one of the panel to say he thought Trump would win.

They asked him what he thought they had all got wrong, and he said it was simple - we (collectively) massively overestimate how much ordinary people care about politics. Those of who are engaged, listen to political podcasts, watch political shows, just assume that everyone is seeing the same stuff we are. They’re not, they don’t care.

Lesson to us all - engage your children with politics. Talk to them about what’s going on. This morning I explained to my two (10 and 7) the election result and why some people are happy and some people (like me) are sad.

Encourage critical thinking, ask them what they think about news stories and why they think it.

Everyone should read The Irrational Ape, and when they’re old enough get their kids to read it too!

If I were still of childbearing age, there's no way I would risk booking a Disneyland holiday to Orlando in case I discovered i was pregnant. You don't want to risk a miscarriage in Florida...

Blimey CaveMum - surely CaveBaby can't be 7 years old?! 😭

Totally agree with what you say. We are guilty of assuming everyone sees and engages with all that is said or written about politicians and policies. There will be no political discourse allowed in schools in the US with Repugs in charge so it's down to parents and grandparents. Same goes for the U.K. - must be difficult to have unbiased teaching about democracy in schools nowadays.

Changes to the Constitution must be ratified by three quarters of the state legislatures, after passing by two thirds majorities in both the House and the Senate, so it's very unlikely the Republicans can change it.

The Constitution | The White House

Why a Constitution? The need for the Constitution grew out of problems with the Articles of Confederation, which established a “firm league of friendship”

Yes - I was referring to any legislation going through the House/Senate rather than the constitution being up for grabs. But I did quote the PP who asked about the Constitution. My bad.

It's not that simple though.

Critical thought requires the Democrats to engage a bit of introspection.

There are clearly reasons that voters find a convicted felon more aligned with theirs than the Democrats.

So sure teach your children to think critically but also not to be so partisan that you can't engage with the thought process of those whose opinions don't align with yours. I think this was a fatal mistake for the Democrats. Calling Trump names and acting righteous clearly wasn't enough to win hearts and minds.

I hope that now they will actually engage with the reasons for voter dissatisfaction.

Edited

Apologies, I quoted the wrong poster. It's very early here.

Gutted for Harris, who I thought did her best with not the greatest hand of cards. Hindsight is 20/20 but Biden and his people should have prepared much earlier for a handover. Can't imagine Trump will necessarily last 4 years either. He doesn't look that fit already. Creepy Vance will be waiting in the wings 😔

Absolutely, I should have been clearer but by thinking critically I meant being able to look at things from all sides before making your decisions. That means asking yourself difficult questions and putting yourself in the shoes of someone else - something most of us (including me) don’t do enough.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/11/2024 09:47

Seeing my echo-chamber reacting on social media has really brought it home to me this morning. I mean, I'm honestly not surprised. I just can't understand it. So much stupid ultimately ending in self-harm. Or is it purely racist misogyny?
Taking myself away from this, putting music from the good old days of my youth on.
Good luck to all my friends on this thread. I'm afraid we're all going to need it to survive the worldwide fall-out.

DuncinToffee · 06/11/2024 09:51

I really think it just comes down to racist misogyny, with the emphasis on misogyny Sad

BruceAndNosh · 06/11/2024 09:52

If I were able to vote, I never would have voted for Trump. But there would have been a hesitation before ticking Harris as I think the Democrats have gone too far in subjugating women's rights in favour of some trans rights. Things are beginning to turn in certain sports areas so they need to listen.

Talkinpeace · 06/11/2024 09:52

Harris lost votes compared to Biden in
EVERY county

Her message did not cut through
to soccer moms, to working dads
of any hue.

Less listening to kids in scarves on Ivy League campuses time.
