There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

Bill Kristol has apparently said Harris will win and we will know unofficially by midnight.

Daft question sorry but how can he possibly know?

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the House and Senate races. Mooch was predicting Dems retake the House but lose the Senate.

And David Axelrod has said that when campaigns have momentum on the final weekend, it tends to carry through on Election Day.

I guess these guys have been reading the political tea leaves for decades, and know the patterns. Plus there must be internal party polling, and the number of rats jumping off Donald's ships says something.

Ah excellent point!

All 4 natural born Americans I know are voting Democrat and three British born but American citizens are all voting Democrat. The one slight worry is in-laws of the natural born Americans were Republican in the Bush, Reagan etc years and may vote that way now. The DH and father of 2 of the voters was Republican until his DW persuaded him Democrat was the way to go. Partly because she’s Jewish, and their DC are adopted South Koreans and there was a real fear of racism should they move down South where in laws live.

CaveMum · 05/11/2024 13:03

10 more states now voting, including Wisconsin.

It's such a close race that either party winning the presidential election could have a full deck with control of House and Senate or end up with neither!

What to expect from the battle for the House and the Senate
. Will both chambers flip?

Well I'm up, have been since about 3.30 (it's 5am where I am). Partially because of election paranoia, partly because I got my Covid booster yesterday and they always make my bones ache. Maybe all day I'll lie around saying "She's going to win, I feel it in my bones".

There's not going to be much election coverage until this evening here, and supposedly results aren't supposed to be on 'local' TV channels until tonight, 8 pm 'my time' (PST). But my DS1 is in NYC for a few days so I'll check with him off and on to see if there are any early returns being reported. Although I expect that he'll probably tell me he's not going to use his 'down time' to watch the news lol.

From Milton's Sonnet 19;

"Thousands at his bidding speed
And post o’er Land and Ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait.”

Well, those thousands have cast their votes. Now all we can do is 'stand and wait'.

@CaveMum I've been trying to memorise the electoral college votes per state...until my lovely husband 🤨 pointed out that I had a page open on t'internet with it all on anyway 🤦🏻‍♀️ and by the time the results do come in I'd likely be sound asleep or inebriated🍺 after waking up at (4ish GMT) stupid o'clock.

Afternoon all from here in Scotland.

Reading the state polling times posted here, with reference to different time zones really brings home the vastness of US and reinforces my simplistic feeling that as America is such a huge land mass what is people's problems with immigration? If the infrastructure and public services can't support a bigger population then build more - I mean there's plenty of space and immigrants are presumably usually fairly young and fit, therefore likely to be in a position to work and pay tax to fund this. I think I'm right in thinking that the US population, like the population of Scotland (and many other European countries ) has more deaths than births. The only reason the population of Scotland has grown in the past few years is immigration but the number of immigration is less than the number of deaths. It really goes to show how successful Trump has been in whipping up fear and mistrust.

TokyoSushi · 05/11/2024 13:59

Right, busy morning of meetings complete, full 'election watch' can begin!

Talkinpeace · 05/11/2024 14:17

FWIW I read a fascinating article about the methodology of the UK exit poll.
They monitor "change"
so by half way through polling day, observers will have a darned good idea of which demographics have turned out
AND the early / mail in ballot checking will be well underway
giving clarity on turnout level and demographics
by the time the last polls close the result will be known to the number geeks

it then just depends if the candidates accept the result

and yes, Vance scares me more than Trump

Anyone having a special dinner tonight? We've got an old friend coming over so doing a roast chicken with all the works and plum kulfis for pud. Hoping that, plus lots of wine, will sustain us until the small hours.
