There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

For the last election, I found a website where the votes were noted as soon as they were dumped, I could see the totals totting up and they matched the mainstream media. Has anyone found something like this, for this election?

It will be here as each county comes in

But remember that as Robert Reich says every time
small counties count fastest and most of them are red.
Big counties take longer and often swing blue

And while the most important result is the Presidential race, who holds the majority in Senate and House is nearly as important.
Biden was severely hampered in the second 2 years of his term by a GOP house that not only wouldn't work with the Democrats, but also couldn't work with their own side!

Yes - if Harris wins she could still end up with a Republican House and Senate. 😔

But at least Trump would be toast!

Neither party has had a filibuster proof Senate since 1981

Which is why the Democrats were never able to pass proper abortion legislation - the Senate would have blocked it

tobee · 04/11/2024 21:44

If Trump wins how much would the Senate and the House be able to (potentially) rein him in? And would he be able to change things up so they would have to do his bidding?

Talkinpeace · 04/11/2024 22:00

If Project 2025 is carried out (and Trumps back room men are its writers)
the Senate and House will be sidelined

I think the trouble is the feeling of helplessness, which is that much worse if (like me) you don't even live where you might make a difference however tiny.

But so long as you have voted if you live in the States, or intend to vote asap, you are in the same boat as I am: there is nothing left that you can do to alter the outcome. It's hell, but managing to do other things for an hour at a time rather than watch/listen to the whole thing is less shredding for the nerves. (There are heaps of books on Project Gutenberg that are more than seventy years old but still worth reading, free: some are very obscure and now is a good time to browse the site and choose one at random. As a for instance. Last time, I got one about early settlement in the US which was so fascinating that I got quite caught up in it and ended up finishing it after I no longer needed to.)

I''m with you, Sister. And we both need to remember that we've done all we can. We've voted and/or we've encouraged those in our 'sphere' to vote and 'badgered' them to get their ballots in the mail/dropped off early. DH and I have made sure that no one we know needs a ride to the polls tomorrow.

We spent this morning running errands. This afternoon we're spending catching up on shows we've got on DVR (skipping the ads). Tonight it'll be Netflix and Prime Video. Neither of us feel like we can deal with the news tonight. Tomorrow, well I'll deal with that when I wake up.

Jon Stewart has titled his election show tomorrow as "Nothing We Can Do About It Now" and I'd say that pretty much sums it all up, right?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/11/2024 22:15

Jon Stewart has the right of it.

If Trump drops dead tonight, who becomes president if Harris doesn't win?

A word of advice. I was at a work event tonight and almost went into news update withdrawal. I recommend easing down slowly, taper. Don't try to cold turkey.

It was made worse by the fact my silenced phone kept vibrating, which I knew was DH texting me little updates.

Resisted a glass of wine when I got home. Deep breaths. Almost there. I'm feeling pretty positive...

Well.... I've had the most wonderful emotional ...can't put it into words...news today.
It's put everything into perspective and just for today I DO NOT CARE about the nasty orange blob

Tomorrow I will be back with a vengeance! Sleep well everyone in UK and for all those in the US our hearts go out to you ...with hope.

Very glad for your good news: hurrah!

Jon Stewart has the right of it.

If Trump drops dead tonight, who becomes president if Harris doesn't win?

Per Brookings.edu

"If the candidate dies or is incapacitated after Election Day, the Constitution kicks in. The first milestone will be the December 17, 2023(sic, that should read 2024), meetings of the electoral college. It may surprise many to know that the electoral college is composed of real flesh and blood electors who meet in their state capitols and sign documents (attestations) that are forwarded on to the president of the Senate (the vice president) for the purposes of counting only! We only hear about electors when someone decides to make a point and vote for someone whose slate they were not on. (During segregation some of these so-called “faithless electors” voted for segregationist candidates.1) Some states have laws binding electors to vote for the winner of the election, others do not. If the winner of the convention dies or is incapacitated it is likely that the legislature would quickly meet to amend the law so that their votes would count.

Finally, what if the president-elect dies or is incapacitated after the electoral college meets and before the inauguration? The authors of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the one adopted to provide for a way to pick a new vice president, thought of this. If the president-elect dies or is incapacitated the vice president is inaugurated. Section 3 of the 20th Amendment reads:
“If, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President elect shall have died, the Vice President elect shall become President.”

So I think this means the count proceeds, the electoral college still votes, and if (dead) Trump has the 270 votes in the Electoral College, Vance becomes POTUS elect.

And I think I need to take some anti-nausea medication at that thought.
