Sorry it is random! Just been watching a documentary on Lucy Letby and one of the people of there was pronouncing 'insulin' in a way that was making my teeth itch! 😂

How do you pronounce it?

No 'sh' sound.
Ins Sue Lin

Ins-yuh-lin

I originally said in-shuh-lin but I think this is a more accurate description for me

PiggieWig · 30/10/2024 12:27

In shu lin.

How was the presenter saying it?

BadgersGalore · 30/10/2024 12:28

Oh god, I think I've been pronouncing it wrong. I say it with a 'sh' in the middle.

amoreoamicizia · 30/10/2024 12:28

The insertion of "syu" is characteristic of RP speakers, especially older ones (not exclusively, before everyone jumps on me!), and it's dying out. You hear it also in "Pyootin" (Putin) and "syoot" (suit) etc.

Lakeyloo · 30/10/2024 12:29

Ince- u -lin

kittykatsupreme · 30/10/2024 12:29

I've never thought about it before but I don't think I can write it!

I pronounce it as it's written but instead of a "sue" sound for the su you its more of a "s-yuh" sound but the sy bit is almost impercetible so writing it as s-yuh is overstating that sound.

Spirallingdownwards · 30/10/2024 12:32

Opaque58 · 30/10/2024 12:21

How should it be pronounced?

The same way the majority are pronouncing it on here with a syoo sound rather than a shuh sound

Nannyfannybanny · 30/10/2024 12:32

I was nursing over 40 years and most people say IN SIR LIN

HEMole · 30/10/2024 12:33

In-syu-lin.

There's no 'sh' in it.

See/hear https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/insulin.

I teach medical students. I also correct their pronunciation of renin (ree-nin, not renn-in, which is a different substance).

This!

OMGitsnotgood · 30/10/2024 12:35

Ins you lin

How were they pronouncing in the programme?

Willsnbills · 30/10/2024 12:35

cactimouse · 30/10/2024 12:33

In sur lin, I didn’t realise there was other ways!

Why the “r”?

OliviaRodrighost · 30/10/2024 12:39

I suppose maybe people who add the “h” are thinking it’s the same as “insurance” - no “h” but pronounced “inshoorance”?

English is a fascinating language! I love it.

TheCheeseTax · 30/10/2024 12:40

ince - you - lin

Anewuser · 30/10/2024 12:41

As @Nannyfannybanny says.

I say in -sir- lin

Sister and dad used insulin for over 40 years.

PucaBandearg · 30/10/2024 12:41

In-suh-lin

cactimouse · 30/10/2024 12:42

Willsnbills · 30/10/2024 12:35

Why the “r”?

Just how I’ve always heard it locally

MadisonAvenue · 30/10/2024 12:44

Ince-you-lin

WorriedRelative · 30/10/2024 12:48

Is it is written ins-u-lin

With the ins like inspection, the su like suit, and the lin like the girls name Lynn.

I can understand why people might say inserlin or ins-ul-in but don't get where a shh comes from.

NewGreenDuck · 30/10/2024 12:49

Ins uh lin. I've never heard anyone say it any other way!
