Sorry it is random! Just been watching a documentary on Lucy Letby and one of the people of there was pronouncing 'insulin' in a way that was making my teeth itch! 😂

How do you pronounce it?

OP posts:
Yeahnoforsure · 30/10/2024 13:48

Yup, that's the way I say it, some do say In-seewl-in though.
LOL there can't be that many ways to say it,would like to hear how the op heard it that made her teeth itch!😁

Nannyfannybanny · 30/10/2024 12:32

I was nursing over 40 years and most people say IN SIR LIN

There is no r.

ShopTattsyrup · 30/10/2024 13:56

Ins-yuh-lin

Although I've now said it so many times aloud to myself it's lost all meaning 😂

There is no r.

People with non rhotic accents often put an R in their phonetic spellings. It represents a schwa (neutral vowel sound spelled as "uh").

IN SIR LIN would be pronounced IN SUH LIN.

FixTheBone · 30/10/2024 14:08

British - In-syuh-lin
Awful, grating, American bastardisation of the language - In-suh-luhn

Easipeelerie · 30/10/2024 14:10

Insyuhlin with a bit of a ‘t’ after the first n.

FixTheBone · 30/10/2024 14:12

from the Latin inusla, part of the original derivation

in-suh-lin (me)
in-syu-lin (DH)
inz-yah-lun (MIL)

In-Shuh-lin

Been a Nurse for 30 years so don't tell me i have been wrong all this time!

Well there's no 'h' in it...

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 30/10/2024 14:24

Listen to Dorothy Hodgkin pronounce it in that video (2 minutes 50 seconds).
In-syoo-lin with a very quick middle syllable. ɪn.sjə.lɪn

People get the shoo sound in the middle because they find it difficult to pronounce the syoo sound. Imagine the King saying suit or super - there'd by a y sound in there that most of us just don't say.

And the Americans dispense with the syoo and just say in-suh-lin ɪn.sə.lɪn

But there’s no pronunciation of a shoe sound in that either?

Redflagsabounded · 30/10/2024 12:23

There's no h. Why are people adding one to make sh?

I can understand different accents making suh or syou, but can't get my head around sh.

Edited

Same as in the word 'tissue'

IN SIR LIN would be pronounced IN SUH LIN.

MN is very non-rhotic centric, and lots of posters don't realize that there are quite a few of us that pronounce the "r" so the insertion of an "r" to change the vowel sound doesn't work in our accents.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 30/10/2024 14:38

I would say in-syuh-lin or in-shu-lin.

@OhshutupSimonyounobhead
I would say it similar to you as well. Mostly.

JennyBG · 30/10/2024 14:44

Ins-you-lin. The "U" in insulin is always pronounced as the letter itself.

GameOfJones · 30/10/2024 14:58

Ince-you-lin

I can understand in-suh-lin as well but I've never head anyone pronounce it with a "sh" sound.

Like this.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 30/10/2024 15:15

I would expect cockneys and those with estuary accents are more likely to have the 'sh' sound.

Maybe their teeth don’t fit properly.
