Sorry it is random! Just been watching a documentary on Lucy Letby and one of the people of there was pronouncing 'insulin' in a way that was making my teeth itch! 😂

How do you pronounce it?

Well they should stop it.Grin
Think 'insular' and 'insulate'. Does anyone feel the need to put 'sh' sounds in those?

😁
What a challenge the English language is!

Nikitaspearlearring · 30/10/2024 13:31

I think the problem comes with the U - pronounce it like the U in Music.

But I was taught by a real stickler who insisted that Susan is pronounced Syoosan 😆( much to Susan's dismay!)

Sorry if I missed this but how did the person in the documentary pronounce insulin?

GoodGriefGordon · 30/10/2024 13:38

Ins-lin which is probably wrong

In-syuh-lin

The same way I’d pronounce insulate but “in” instead of “ate”.

(I’m Scottish if that makes a difference)

Edited

This. I'm not Scottish! I'm near London.

Ince- you- lin although I’ve heard In-sir-lin too.

Marshbird · 30/10/2024 13:43

RitaIncognita · 30/10/2024 13:28

@Marshbird

I say IN-sur-lin

I'm a rhotic speaker so this would be an odd way for me to say it as the word has no "r" in it.

As I say, the sue bit is not emphasised, the u bit is more, but emphasis is on In and Lin

we had 40000 employees world wide. Stick any 50 in a room and they’d say it 6 ways slightly differently. And we made the stuff and talked about it all the time.

it’s just a flipping accent and dialect…it matters not a jot really.

I’m sure Sean Connery would have pronounced it “ inch-shall-in”.

I pronounce it “in-suh-lin”

amoreoamicizia · 30/10/2024 13:45

To add to my previous post, think of the inserted "y" in "super". It sounds "s[yoo]ooper" old-fashioned, but it's characteristic of very much older RP speakers . The trend is towards dropping.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2024 13:46

I've just had a few nice moments finding how Dorothy Hodgkin pronounced it, this one has an American too (Linus Pauling) - a little different but not much.

blackpooolrock · 30/10/2024 13:46

for those that say in-shuh-lin - Do you all speak like Sean Connery?

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 30/10/2024 13:46

I’ve said it so many times reading this, I don’t know how I pronounce it any more!

MeMyCatsAndI · 30/10/2024 13:47

In- sa - lin

I say it around 20 times a day so I'm pretty sure I'm right 😂
