Do people use teapots in real life?

DYIDIY · 29/10/2024 16:48

I see them all the time on insta reels and in cafes obv but haven’t seen people using them in real life for ages. I’d love a nice one for myself but I think it migjt just be a waste of money and will never get used. Do you have one and use it? Any recommended ones in terms of practicality but also beauty? I quite like the clear glass ones or the black japanese looking style, not sure what they are called.

Yes me! You need loose tea to make a decent cup of tea and that needs a teapot. I have several with infuser inserts that keep the leaves contained so you don't need a separate tea strainer when you pour it.

For those using loose tea, do you have a teapot with filter or do you have a separate tea strainer you put in?

Not a strainer you put in the pot. Just tye traditional kind of strainer that sits over the cup while you pour the tea in.

@AllProperTeaIsTheft but if the strainer is in the cup, what do you need a teapot for, just pouring water?

@AllProperTeaIsTheft ah sorry I understand, you mean loose tea inside the pot as opposed to inside the strainer

Every day in our house.

HangingOutInRaccoonCity · 31/10/2024 23:00

Those cast iron teapots look really nice to me.
I've been thinking of getting one.
Does anyone have one?

Apolloneuro · 31/10/2024 23:14

Every one of my cups of tea is made in a teapot, using loose leaves.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 31/10/2024 23:43

Yes, my husband does every morning, after emptying the dish washer. He then brings me tea in bed.
He does not do lots of other household tasks which I have to do, but making tea in a teapot he does every day.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 02/11/2024 11:01

Did anyone's family have the 'funeral teapot' we had a massive brown teapot that was only used for funerals and copious amounts of tea.

TragicMuse · 02/11/2024 11:02

Yup. Often.

DreamW3aver · 02/11/2024 11:07

Always, tea made in a cup is horrible. Years ago I had a job where the other staff would test me and I could always tell the difference

DYIDIY · 02/11/2024 15:59

Ok here is my shortlist, can someone please help me choose:

I figured I can start with a small one and if I get into the habit of using it every day I can buy a fancier one for when I have guests.

I have found that metal lidded teapots get hot lids. I personally would go for 1 or 4.

reluctantbrit · 02/11/2024 20:27

Electric kettle and metal filter. I don't like a strainer as I hate having my tea getting too strong with the leaves remaining in the pot. I drink my tea black, so I am quite fussy about it.

If I don't use my glass pot with the filter, I use paper tea bags you fill with the loose tea and a small metal holder which is secured at the spout. Works also great for herbal teas where the leaves/flowers are too big for the metal filter.

I found that the paperbag works better than the ball/egg-shaped thingies.

Violinist64 · 08/11/2024 16:28

I use one all the time. Tea tastes much nicer because it has time to brew and infuse. I prefer loose tea, but usually use teabags because they are easier. One teabag for 1-2 people and two for 3-4 people. It is also a cheaper way of making tea.

DYIDIY · 23/11/2024 21:30

@Violinist64 I am convinced.
Which tea brands are the best ones to try for a beginner? I don’t think super cheap teabags and don’t mind spending up to £10

Violinist64 · 24/11/2024 10:57

Yorkshire, Twinings and Whittards are my go-to brands. Clipper is another expensive, good quality brand that many people like, but it is not to my taste. Waitrose and Marks and Spencer are very good own brand teas.

GlomOfNit · 24/11/2024 11:05

I do! I love teas and buy loads of loose leaf (Bird and Brew do very well out of me) and use them often, though to be honest, I go through phases of being arsed to do this! It's undeniably an extra hassle to remove the tea leaves, rinse out the filter, wash the pot, etc.

Because DH just drinks bog standard red label any-brand-will-do black tea (heathen) and I prefer poncy teas, I use a small one-person pot - I've got a Stump teapot with internal filter (actually I have two) and it's great. I keep meaning to knit a cosy for it as it cools down fast, but most teapots do. If you have more than one, they stack, which I suppose is handy.

Glassyk · 21/06/2025 14:17

I have my morning & afternoon tea cuppa brewed in a china tea pot every day. Can't beat a decent brew!
Favourites are looseleaf: Earl grey and English lavender ( had this cold over ice yesterday! .mmmm....Earl grey and English lavender Earl grey and English lavender, Refreshing in this heat)
& Bourne valley Breakfast tea (If you like M&S classic gold, you will love Bourne Valley breakfast tea)
Had various teapots over the years, many dribble from the spout. Seems to be the shape of the spout that effects the dribble as you pour. Found my perfect one now.

My parents use one all the time. Mostly for economy reasons, you can make more cups from a bag 😂

Swirlframe · 21/06/2025 14:20

BeMintBee · 29/10/2024 16:49

MIL does. I like the idea but it’s one more thing to store and wash up.

You never was a teapot! The experts will tell you the tannin srains improve the flavour!!

aCatCalledFawkes · 21/06/2025 14:26

Yes 100%, always tea in a teapot, My daughter and I share making rounds every morning. I have a London Pottery One at the moment but would of stayed with my old one if the lid hadn't been dropped to many times.
We have tea bags but I grew up with pots of tea so wanted to carry it on.

Glassyk · 21/06/2025 14:28

I just top up the brew of Green tea,or Earl grey and English lavender with water at recommended temperature, then you get value for your money. More cups from one pot☕
