I’m scared now I’ve realised this

I was thinking that the US public wouldn’t vote for Trump now that it is so apparent he is such a fascist. It’s terrifying to realise that they already know that and that is why they are going to vote for him.
I’m scared for the world.

I have never been happier that the majority of women on Mumsnet can't vote in the US elections. It is scary how brainwashed the majority of you are. Donald Trump was the president 2017-2020 and the world went on. Turn off the news, and enjoy your life.

Sounds to me like you need to have the news on a bit more.

What a blinkered attitude.

Oh well fuck the rest of the world then! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Can you honestly say that when you voted in the recent General Election that you gave any care to what the rest of the world felt about the results of the UK election?

Oodiks · 29/10/2024 20:18

independencefreedom · 29/10/2024 19:11

What do you mean by 'identity politics'?

They mean that they see Kamala Harris as a 'diversity hire' who isn't there on her own merit. Never mind that she has got there by sheer hard work.

Basically @CustardCreams2 is confirming that they are a racist who can't believe a non-white person could achieve anything without affirmative action.

ChocolateGanache · 29/10/2024 20:21

CustardCreams2 · 29/10/2024 17:07

Trump isn’t taking away women’s reproductive rights. He said he would leave it to the states to decide themselves re abortion.
Trump isn’t great but Harris is intellectually challenged enough that many worry no one would take her or the US seriously anymore.

She was the bloody attorney general for California! She's very much NOT intellectually challenged 😂😂😂

"...and a fascist"

That's interesting. How do you "know" that he is a "fascist"?

Serious question btw.

This was a serious question to a professor of a related topic on BBC world service I think, it might repeat. It was good, worth a listen.

It was a no from him btw, but still some good analysis

I am furious Donald Trump keeps being compared to Hitler or the Nazi Party. They are nowhere near the same. Such comparisons not only trivialise the atrocities committed during the Holocaust but also fail to engage with the unique complexities of contemporary politics. Equating the two disregards historical context and diminishes the horror and scale of Nazi crimes. Criticising political figures should be done thoughtfully, without resorting to exaggerated analogies that only hinder constructive dialogue.

I didn't mention Hitler.

Since you have though, he was aided and abetted by other right wing leaders at the time. He didn't exist in a vacuum, the general political mood was right wing and everyone thought it was ok. And see what happened..

America's influence is huge in the world.....the way Trump behaves, the things he says, the lies he tells. We don't need that kind of influence. You can accept that because of whatever complex situation you like but I can't.

Choosenandenough · 29/10/2024 20:27

Oodiks · 29/10/2024 18:54

It's entirely obvious that we judge countries by their current leaders and America under Trump was a laughingstock!

I don’t think it was ‘killing’ it’ under Biden either to be fair. My point was neither are actually running the country.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/10/2024 20:28

Another2Cats · 29/10/2024 20:13

I would totally disagree with you and I think that @FupaTrooper makes very good points.

Have you seen Harris speak? She does not come across well at all.

Regardless of her lack of coherence, her apparent changes of policy and introduction of new pledges part way through the campaign are all very confusing and, quite frankly, rather unbelievable.

Frankly, she really isn't very good at all.

And then you raise Clinton? She really is one of the most deceitful people in politics.

You say "no Dem woman candidate will be enough. Ever." I disagree. Find a candidate who is more centrist and who can actually speak unscripted and Trump would be nowhere.

I apoteciate your opinion, but we're at odds. I find both Harris and Clinton thoughtful and well-spoken.
Trump's bizarre ramblings are indisputable. His proposed economic remedies, ie massive tariffs ("My favourite word is "tariff"" he said)might sound good on the surface, but will have disastrous consequences.
The Dems are not perfect, but inflation has decreased by approx 5pts under their administration.
It won't be enough to clinch it for the Dems, though. I think the race is tighter than the polls show.

Taytoface · 29/10/2024 20:29

Noisylass · 29/10/2024 20:15

Well load of shit I have been watching the big massive rallies that Kamala Harris has been doing and the last one as I said had 30,000 people in Texas and they are talking about workers rights healthcare reproductive rights they’re not talking about other things you’re talking about that’s a load of shit.

That is a very late development. They have belatedly realised how much of a vote loser is the legislation that strips girls of their right to accessing to sporting opportunities in school. The democrats signed that into law. People do not like it, so they have been noticeably silent on this. But words are cheap. Look at their legislation. It has done nothing to improve the lot of working Americans and this has fucked them.

Well I have been listening to actual facts and again not true because the economy is doing so much better. The interest rate is getting better and things are better but a lot of false narrative has been suggested by Donald Trump. https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/4956904-the-biden-harris-economic-record-is-much-better-than-critics-claim/

its fucking terrifying to be an american right now.

I feel a strong uncanny valley feeling that these people are walking around in my world and so full of hate and just plain batshit crazy to think trump is good to reelect. I'm avoiding most social media and broadcast tv tho realized last night that children tv programs have little to no political advertising so reduced to watching cartoons which is an improvement over the news I guess.

Thinking of him reelected makes my stomach churn

thinking of ms harris winning and violence/non-acceptance makes me want to puke.

I'm in turmoil until its over then it might get worse.

Oh god, I hadn’t even thought about the unrest that will be stirred up by Trump if he doesn’t win. Still preferable to what will happen if he wins though

No need to look as far as the US public. In the UK we still have people voting Labour despite them creating a dodgy dossier of lies to take the country into an illegal war in Iraq to kill 500,000+ people and mass migration still going on today.

I'd worry far more about those people supporting such a party here in the UK rather than Trump who in fact started no wars and set up the Abraham Accords, reached out to North Korea, Russia etc.

I'd say UK Labour voters have far more blood on their hands than any Trump voter ever will.

hamstersarse · 29/10/2024 20:42

If I were American I would have voted RFK Jnr, and given he has now teamed with Trump, I'd be voting Trump.

I often feel people who still go on about Brexit and Trump being Hitler are just behind the times and somewhat in denial. They can't see what is going on around them, they just want to drink a Chardonnay with their friends on a Friday and talk about the latest Netflix drama, they don't want to face the conflict that is brewing in our societies due to immigration and widespread government over reach and corruption.

I hear people defending Starmer for his literal and provable lies, and it seems to me that it is just too much to think about, they have their Chardonnay to drink on a Friday and can't be bothered with all this upset. They voted for him because he seems nice so that was the end of it. Don't want to hear any more.

Fair enough, but I kinda think stay out of it completely and just actually drink your chardonnay.

Trump has been treated very unfairly, most of the stories that you hear about him are vastly exaggerated and taken out of context. He has been prosecuted for things that are ridiculous, and when you hear people say he is a felon with 34 convictions, most people can't even explain what those convictions are for, and if they bother to find out they are surprised it is something so very odd. And ridiculous. He is a threat to the Establishment, and in the US, the Democrats are the party of war, capture by big corporations and censorship, so if that is your bag, cool. Trump is not captured by anyone, and that is his main appeal (and threat) and there is absolutely no reason to be scared by him. I would definitely be more scared by the Democrats, just take a listen to RFK Jnr who was a Democrat through and through, and see how they treated him and what he thinks of the current Democrat party.

U say starmer lies and yet you don’t mention anything about what Donald Trump has done you realise in the four years of him being a president this is the amount of lies that he was fact checked on by the Washington Post. Trump’s false or misleading claims total 30,573 over 4 years

Emmascout1774 · 29/10/2024 20:59

The argument that we shouldn’t call Trump a fascist because it undermines the holocaust is a totally nonsensical argument to me.

  1. if somebody says what they’re going to do, believe them. hitler/franco/mussolini etc all said these crazy hateful things when they were on the rise and people just thought ‘oh they don’t mean it.’ Turns out they did. Why are we assuming, when trump says that it’s America for Americans, that it will be any different with him?
  2. it’s BECAUSE of what we all know what hitler and his ilk did that we’re so worried about Trump. Far from undermining it, we’re actively recognising what humanity is capable of when a bigoted madman gets to power.
  3. hitler destroyed the democratic system (the Weimar Republic) that he took over. Trump has already tried to do that once (January 6) so why on earth do we think it’ll be any different.

What do you actually think Trump is going to do? I find it absurd when people compare him to Hitler. You know Trump supports Israel. Please tell me what you actually fear or is it just blind hate?
Do you not see the extremes that the democracts and the establishment have gone to to try and silence Trump and remove their opposition?

Echobelly · 29/10/2024 21:12

GreekDogRescue · 29/10/2024 19:09

Trump has Jewish grandchildren and supports Israel.
How on earth can he be described as a ‘fascist’.
Younare being ridiculous.

Doesn't work that way. Fascist does not always equal antisemitic, although as it is I think Trump's policies and the direction he's sending the party in will ultimately be dangerous to Jews. I'm the descendent of Holocaust survivors and I can tell you that people like Trump are not good for us. Any support for Jews is as fake as Trump's 'Christianity'

Supporting Israel also doesn't mean you support Jews. He likes it because he sees it as anti-Muslim and the Evangelicals behind him like it because they believe the Jews of Israel need to all convery so the Messiah will return (good luck with that, most Israelis fall into either Ultra-Orthodox or totally irreligious, but there you go)

What staggers me are the number of women that will vote for him

I'm of the opinion now that everyone just deserves what they vote for now. I'm done trying to make people see sense.

Women voting for removal of their reproductive rights? Go for it. Voting in a convicted criminal? Why not.

I mean, look at us. Voting to leave the EU to regain control of our borders? It went so well for us.

Having said all that, I think it's a travesty that Kamala hasn't come out fighting for herself as a candidate. Being "not Donald Trump" isn't enough. She needed to campaign stronger for her policies and be clear on where she stood on key issues and I don't feel she's been strong enough on that front, to the point it will lose her the election.

GettingStuffed · 29/10/2024 21:15

I think a lot of Americans don't want a black female president. I'm more scared of Vance than I am Trump. He could break up the USA and it's looking like Gilead is a real possibility.

Have you seen publicly filmed footage of him at his own rally mocking a man with a disability? Or at a publicly filmed debate saying 'THEY'RE EATING THE DOGS'?

This is actually who he is. Publicly. On film. And I've never drunk chardonnay in my life 🤣

Biden didn't start any wars. He actually ended one.

Do you mean the withdrawal from Afghanistan? Because that was an utter catastrophe.
