I’m scared now I’ve realised this

I was thinking that the US public wouldn’t vote for Trump now that it is so apparent he is such a fascist. It’s terrifying to realise that they already know that and that is why they are going to vote for him.
I’m scared for the world.

I really dont understand how so many Americans (a staggering amount!) are so ignorant: like, the latest one I've seen is meteorologists getting death threats because people think they are responsible for the hurricane. Like, some quite senior political figures posting messages online about hurricanes being created and controlled by the "liberal left" or some other such bullshit. And this is just one example. I think there must be something wrong with the education system in the US, I have never seen this level of ignorance anywhere else - there are idiots and imbeciles everywhere, but not on this scale and not that high up in the government.

I must add that I love America, have a lot of friends there, go there a lot and I think its a cool country - but what's been happening there lately scares and upsets me a lot.

Watched YouTube jubilee did middle ground democrat voters all seem educated republican voters seem dumb and stupid. Doesn’t matter what I see they can’t argue for shit it’s usually oh well it upsets the right people. They don’t know policies they just like emoti9ns and sound bites. Same over in this country you know when they ring lbc who you think they vote for . Reform voter and some Tory types really cannot argue their points at all

Your sneering generalisation (and dumb is regarded as an ableist slur ftr) illustrates perfectly the appeal/motivation behind 'upsetting the right people' (they're talking about you. And the countless others who'll proclaim everything right of centre as 'far right').

Reform and the Conservatives are two entirely different entities. In the same way the SNP for example and the Labour party are. Both left of centre, both poles apart in much of their policy.

First of all I am working class and northern I do not have money so I don’t look down up on people but trust me when you watch people speak and listen to how they evaluate their opinions and based on so-called untruths and facts on the other side, then I think they are stupid. It’s not a disabled term or anything like that they are damn right dumb. While you say that reform and the Conservative party are two separate parties unfortunately the Conservative party and not the Conservative party of old that Margaret thatcher would probably be turning in a grave about because they have to become like far right agitators. There’s a difference between right of centre and what we have now.

This has been quite a topic debated on various programs in which his views, his own words, are shown as fascist/fascist leaning. People that worked closely with him have said this recently as well.

Much of US media is very biased indeed. I would take anything claimed with a very large pinch of salt.

I read this article in The Guardian (of all papers!) just today:

These are the first two paragraphs, you can read the rest online

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/oct/29/trump-rally-fascism-politics

No, Trump is not a fascist. But that doesn’t make him any less dangerous

Trump is similar to far-right populists like Modi and Orbán. But fascist? No

Trump’s former chief of staff has just confirmed the ex-president is a fascist. The former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff went on record saying the ex-president is a fascist. Historians of the highest stature say he’s a fascist – shouldn’t all this be enough to settle what has come to be known in the US as “The Fascism Debate” – a debate that has long been acrimonious and surprisingly personal?

There’s no disagreement among the participants in this debate that Trump must be stopped. Any yet disputes around the F-word have made leftists and liberals assemble in a circular firing squad. Those using the fascism analogy have found themselves attacked for ignoring that all was not well with US politics before 2016; those refusing historical parallels are faulted for complacency. Yet it is perfectly possible to find the label fascism inappropriate (and possibly counterproductive), without in any way minimizing the dangers Trump poses, or turning a blind eye to fascist strands in US history, such as the KKK.

[EDIT]

I also found it amusing that she references the KKK when, in fact, it was the Democrats who invited the KKK to take part in their National Convention in 1924

So anyone who votes for a party I don't support is "dumb and stupid"?

I would suggest that this is probably not a good stance to take if you wish to win over people to your point of view.

Not at all but if you are coming across like you are stupid and you cannot argue with actual facts and not lies and made up shite that looks like conspiracy theories then yes she was stupid if I listen to somebody that is quite educated on the opposite side. I will say but so far listening to Donald Trump supporters unfortunately they are not intelligent.

Onlyonekenobe · 29/10/2024 19:54

I hope he wins, just to piss his highfalutin opponents off.

Also he upsets all the right people 🤣

Millions and millions of Americans are voting for Trump for these reasons alone.

Marjorie Taylor Greene. Elected member of the House of Representatives. Supports gun rights, doesn't believe in the theory of evolution or a woman's right to choose. Wikipedia says this:

After Hurricane Helene caused destruction in several American states, Greene in October 2024 posted online "a map of hurricane affected areas with an overlay of electoral map by political party shows how hurricane devastation could affect the election", showing many Republican-leaning areas affected, then she wrote later that day: "Yes they can control the weather … It's ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can't be done."[291][292]

She's an utter nutter. Believes Trump won the last election, of course.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 29/10/2024 20:01

I can imagine how disenfranchised you'd feel if you are in a strong republican or democrat state if you don't follow the majority. Your vote basically doesn't count. So why bother even casting it. It's like the opposite of democracy that they speak so proudly of.

I wonder how difficult would it be really to have a numbers only system, highest count wins. It would really empower a lot of people.

Onlyonekenobe · 29/10/2024 20:02

Noisylass · 29/10/2024 19:55

Calling these people "dumb", whether it's true or not, is exactly why they vote for Trump. They know you look down on them, they think you're elitist, you vote Democrat hence they will vote Republican just to get at you - it's the only power they have in a country where the cultural, economic, social majority ignore or disdain them. Trump will be gone in 4 years or fewer. These people and their problems will remain. This is all bigger than Trump (although he would have it that nothing is bigger or better than him).

NomenNudum · 29/10/2024 20:02

It really pisses me off that we are having to spend the last few livable years on this planet fighting off fascism rather than focusing so our kids don't all die in the drought wars of 2040

Taytoface · 29/10/2024 20:04

The democrats are losing this as much as Trump is winning it. Instead of focusing on things that really matter to working people, like workers rights, healthcare, reproductive rights etc they have been too busy insisting that men can be women and that everyone is racist. The urban experiments with law around drug use and vagrancy in San Francisco and Portland have been catastrophic. Their core supporter based just does not trust them any more.

Waitingforfriday75 · 29/10/2024 20:07

I have never been happier that the majority of women on Mumsnet can't vote in the US elections. It is scary how brainwashed the majority of you are. Donald Trump was the president 2017-2020 and the world went on. Turn off the news, and enjoy your life.

Remember that Hitler was voted in.

Never underestimate someone who leads people who are blind to their failings whatever they do.

And thinking of what happened there and how a Trump presidency will influence the right across the world doesn't bear thinking about. The only plus point is that tends to be quite isolationist (I think).

Sorry, 1924? Are you talking about something that occurred 100 years ago as though it carries relevant weight today? Respectfully, the history of the KKK is not straightforward and has had members of all political stripes.

Also, the Democrat party was essentially the party of the south and of segregation in 1924. This all changed with the New Deal and the civil rights legislation of the 1960s.
So it was a totally different party.

I am furious Donald Trump keeps being compared to Hitler or the Nazi Party. They are nowhere near the same. Such comparisons not only trivialise the atrocities committed during the Holocaust but also fail to engage with the unique complexities of contemporary politics. Equating the two disregards historical context and diminishes the horror and scale of Nazi crimes. Criticising political figures should be done thoughtfully, without resorting to exaggerated analogies that only hinder constructive dialogue.

NomenNudum · 29/10/2024 20:12

The world did not go on for an awful lot of Americans who died because Trump tossed out Obama's pandemic planning strategy and told them to inject bleach 🙄

Put a great, talented, charismatic, intelligent, GOOD woman in the mix.

How is Kamala Harris not like that?
Respectfully, your post shows a sentiment that is quite prevalent in the US: no Dem woman candidate will be enough. Ever.
Harris, and Clinton for that matter, far exceed Trump yet the criticism levied against them is quite disgusting. It wouldn't matter if they walked on water, would it?

I would totally disagree with you and I think that @FupaTrooper makes very good points.

Have you seen Harris speak? She does not come across well at all.

Regardless of her lack of coherence, her apparent changes of policy and introduction of new pledges part way through the campaign are all very confusing and, quite frankly, rather unbelievable.

Frankly, she really isn't very good at all.

And then you raise Clinton? She really is one of the most deceitful people in politics.

You say "no Dem woman candidate will be enough. Ever." I disagree. Find a candidate who is more centrist and who can actually speak unscripted and Trump would be nowhere.

Well load of shit I have been watching the big massive rallies that Kamala Harris has been doing and the last one as I said had 30,000 people in Texas and they are talking about workers rights healthcare reproductive rights they’re not talking about other things you’re talking about that’s a load of shit.

Try watching some Conservative channels too for balance.
I've seen lots of Conservative channels where they interview democrat/biden/Harris supporters on the street who make crazy accusations but when questioned or given facts, cannot back up what they are saying. Most are just repeating things they've heard on the news or have been told to hate Trump and blindly do.

They also put a Trump supporter into Harris crowd and they get verbally and physically attacked, then they put Harris supporter into Trump crowd and they are welcomed. Obviously both sides do these things to make the others look bad or stupid.
I can't comprehend why anyone would have voted for Biden or vote for Harris but have to assume they do it with good intentions.
