Toothbrush holders that don't become disgusting

In my mind I can imagine the perfect toothbrush holder that doesn't slowly fill up with a pool of disgusting mouldy water. But does such a thing exist?
It basically needs to let any water completely escape in order to easily evaporate. The one we have is a "nice" one from Brabantia that even with its "removable easy clean base" gets disgustingly mouldy after a few weeks/months of use.

Any recommendations? TIA!

We are a hard water area, does that make it worse?

You buy two copies of a design you like and swap them over/pop the old one in the dishwasher once a week.

Even something that drains well needs cleaning regularly.

That is the kind of elegant and simple design I am looking for! I just need one for an electric toothbrush too...
Although our toothbrushes live on a windowsill above the sink, so I would need to consider how much of a pool of water it would create.

We use these - the problem is that water still collects at the bottom. So we lay them down sideways on top of the holder to dry - you have to be a bit more careful not to knock them off but they stay dry and clean.

Do people not shut the toilet lids when they flush?

I always do this, it avoids the bacteria shooting out into the bathroom.

@InvisibleRadiator I fold a piece of kitchen roll and put it at the bottom of the toothbrush holder, and change it every few days. It works a treat

This is so simple, it’s genius. I might start to do this.

I got one from Ikea recently. It's bamboo with a plastic removeable bottom that has holes for drainage. So far so good.

HerGorgeousMajestyArabellaScott · 27/10/2024 13:22

Same. A vase/jar/jug works fine, and goes in the dishwasher.

Interestingly* there are certain small wormy creatures that live only in the liquid found in toothbrush holders.

*I find it interesting, ymmv

We have two and just swap them out every few days when we put one in the dishwasher.

i use a ceramic one, don't have a dishwasher so I regularly remove the toothbrushes and toothpaste and put a few drops of thick bleach in the base , leave it for about an hour and then rinse it out with very hot water. It is spotless and clean after that.
Best approach I think, certainly for my household.
No dishwasher and I'd feel the need to have a dedicated toothbrush holder cloth /sponge/narrow brush to clean yucky holder.
Electric brushes require heavy/chunky based mug to prevent toppling over.

Clean it weekly when you clean your bathroom and make sure when you put toothbrushes back after use, that you've rinsed it so there's no crusty toothpaste building up

I use ceramic holders and put them in the dishwasher. Why are they getting so full of water??

That's what I do.

viques · 27/10/2024 17:36

Seems like I am the only person who buys toothbrush covers to cover the brush bit from random flies. Thank you Flying tiger.

DancingNotDrowning · 27/10/2024 17:37

I use mugs that go in the dish washer weekly.

pavementgerms · 27/10/2024 18:03

I just put the Joseph Joseph holder in the dishwasher. It's super easy.

DingDongDell70 · 27/10/2024 20:17

For years I’ve used a metal pot that has decorative holes cut out. We bought it in Ikea.

Aposterhasnoname · 27/10/2024 20:29

Just rinse it under the tap everyday when you clean your teeth. Takes literally ten seconds.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 27/10/2024 20:41

I got a bamboo one full of holes. Drains well.

Toothbrush covers make toothbrushes less sanitary because they trap moisture in.

pestowithwalnuts · 28/10/2024 03:02

I have a chrome toothbrush holder that gets washed twice a week in the dishwasher .
I couldn't leave it for weeks..urgh.

mogtheexcellent · 28/10/2024 10:18

I got a cutlery drainer from dunelm. it has an insert with holes in so toothbrushes not sitting in water.

TENSsion · 28/10/2024 14:19

Suri electric toothbrushes

ManchesterLu · 28/10/2024 14:21

Just rinse it out every so often and it'll be absolutely fine. Also, if you wash your brush properly before you put it back in, the water won't go mouldy.

I'm looking to save myself time. I have messy children and don't really want to add "dry your toothbrushes" to my eleventy million items long list of instructions for them! That is also why the holders get water in them.
I also don't want to have to clean it every week.
C'mon people, we can send humans to space, surely we can crack this problem!

Cleaning it every week isn't a big deal if you have something that doesn't have a lot of corners. If you're wiping down everything else in the bathroom, it's just one more thing. Empty it, fill with hot soapy water, swish and wipe. Or as others have said, have one in use and another clean waiting, so they can go in the dishwasher once a week.

Autumnweddingguest · 28/10/2024 15:58

Every other day I just rinse mine out with hot water, once a week I put a bit of steradent solution in it and when I remember (about once every two months) stick it in the dishwasher. But if you rinse it very regularly, it doesn't get that rotten water build-up.
