Toothbrush holders that don't become disgusting

In my mind I can imagine the perfect toothbrush holder that doesn't slowly fill up with a pool of disgusting mouldy water. But does such a thing exist?
It basically needs to let any water completely escape in order to easily evaporate. The one we have is a "nice" one from Brabantia that even with its "removable easy clean base" gets disgustingly mouldy after a few weeks/months of use.

Any recommendations? TIA!

We are a hard water area, does that make it worse?

Yes, mine have been stuck on tiles about a year with no sign of movement. Love them, think we get over a month charge on them too. We send back the heads to recycle.

Is it a sticky pad thing that holds it on?

Riverswims · 27/10/2024 07:51

just lay them on a dry face flannel on your shelf/window sill then change the flannel daily/when you see wet you can put your washed ID brushes on there too. or if you're so sold on the idea of a toothbrush holder then put the whole lot including manual brushes into the dishwasher often it'll be clean and dry when it comes out 🤷🏽‍♀️ obv don't put your electric toothbrush in dishwasher

Do people not shut the toilet lids when they flush?

Surprisingly not many people do, we're a lid down household, majority of guests we have leave the lid up.
I was always taught to leave things as you find them too!

What do you want it to do? Either it will collect the water in which case you have to drain and clean it, or it won’t and the water will drain on to whatever is below it.

Blossombaby99 · 27/10/2024 08:45

I can relate! Currently have IKEA tasken ones stuck to tiles, above a wipeable surface. They hold two electric brushes each, they look cheap and are cheap, but dont get as horrid, as water drips through the base. I also have taught kids to rinse and dry toothbrush handles when finished (DH refuses hence the need for this solution!).

I’m really struggling to understand why drying them isn’t an option. It would be quicker to dry them for the dc at this stage

Singleandproud · 27/10/2024 08:49

We keep toothbrushes in the kitchen, the cup still gets a bit grim but there is less water in the atmosphere to condense into it from the shower, and easier to remember to chuck it in the dishwasher

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 27/10/2024 09:19

Just stick it in the dishwasher every week or so.

I personally don't use a flannel so would have nothing to dry it on... same for OP?

I really do like those Muji holders. Just wondering though,

Do you need to use a skinny handled toothbrush? The hole looks a bit narrow.

As it has no base do you just stand them on the sink surround?

Many thanks 😊

Darls3000 · 27/10/2024 09:40

I attach mine to the wall and it allows drainage and is always clean and dry as a result.

Jollyjoy · 27/10/2024 09:43

We have this, which sticks to our bathroom mirror. It was a game changer as kids were getting toothpaste everywhere. I don’t seem to have a problem with drips!

I put our JosephJoseph one in the dishwasher

Then use a hand towel or assign a tea towel to the bathroom and keep it in a drawer

TribulationPeriwinkle · 27/10/2024 09:59

We have the Muji rings. They still get completely grim and require washing, though.

I don’t keep my toothbrush in the same room as the toilet. I let it air dry in a more hygienic place and don’t use a holder.

Don’t you have a clean bathroom?

Whereabouts is it stored in your bedroom?

This sounds pretty grim to me. A used tea towel in a steamy bathroom festering germ and you will have a tea towel to wash instead of a toothbrush holder so the same work.

Hi beetr00 - my sink is built into a cabinet so it is on the top of the cabinet next to the sink but could sit on the sink surround. You can get a normal toothbrush in there. I also have a skinny toothbrush from the dentist for cleaning a wisdom tooth and that fits in alongside the normal toothbrush. You couldn't get two normal toothbrushes in it though. I'm really happy with it. Not the cheapest for what it is at £4.50 but no more looking at the scummy stuff at the bottom of the toothbrush mug. I'm using bamboo toothbrushes these days and the end of the handle was just going black in the mug but doesn't now.

It is basically just a small napkin ring. If I hadn't have got this I would have got something to stick on the wall that holds the brush end of the toothbrush so that any drips would fall down.

This is exactly why I put the lid down while flushing!! But as a microbiologist I can tell you there is fecal matter pretty much everywhere. 😂

Yeah well I don’t do that…as I said I use my flannel 🤷‍♀️

I'm looking to save myself time. I have messy children and don't really want to add "dry your toothbrushes" to my eleventy million items long list of instructions for them! That is also why the holders get water in them.
I also don't want to have to clean it every week.
C'mon people, we can send humans to space, surely we can crack this problem!

I have two identical ones we put the heads on and they are swapped weekly and can be thrown into the dishwasher.

The handle is rinsed and dried after use. Even my teen is able to do so.

I honestly think you make a mountain of a molehill.

I use ceramic holders and put them in the dishwasher. Why are they getting so full of water??

i use a ceramic one, don't have a dishwasher so I regularly remove the toothbrushes and toothpaste and put a few drops of thick bleach in the base , leave it for about an hour and then rinse it out with very hot water. It is spotless and clean after that.

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 27/10/2024 11:33

Just any toothbrush holder and tip it out/wipe it down each day or so?
