Can't believe what happened... was l in the right?

Went to IKEA today... hardly any trolleys in the trolley bay .. but just manage to get last one.
I put my walking stick in the trolley.
Needed loo.. went to disabled loo..( l have a stoma). left my trolley outside with my walking stick in.. thinking surely no one will take my trolley.
Comes out of loo and trolley is gone.
Asks the security guy and a member of staff I'd they had seen it/ moved it.. they hadn't.
So l start walking... to look for it..
See a woman in the next section pushing my trolley .. with some items she had put in.
I explain she has my trolley with my walking stick in.
She looks at me like I'm mad but doesn't say a word. Takes out my walking stick and hands it to me.
I say.. " can you please take your items out of my trolley and let me have it back please".
She huffs and puffs.. but doesn't speak. Put her items into her friends trolley and pushes my trolley to me so hard it bangs into me.

How many staff actually hang around the IKEA toilets? And how can the trolley thief have known that the OP (who left the trolley outside a disabled toilet) was able to move around without her stick or a trolley to lean on? Come on now.

Edited

OP clearly mentions being able to find staff after she left the bathrooms so I’m not sure what you mean. By any of your post actually.

I think some people need to take a look in the mirror and ask am I really that person

Kilve · 23/10/2024 08:04

doodleschnoodle · 22/10/2024 22:45

She thought someone had discarded their walking stick after being magically healed by IKEA Jesus and thought she could maybe take it home with her?

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

But sometimes people have medical conditions where they urgently need the toilet. You say the coat is a marker do you not think op leaving a walking stick in the trolley is also a marker

I never said it wasn't. And I have one such medical condition myself.

DreamW3aver · 23/10/2024 07:12

Do you lead a sheltered life? Your bar for being horrified must be at almost floor level.

There are CFs all over, the Mumsnet demographic is so not representative of the real world it's funny.

No one even knows if the person clocked the stick in the trolley before they wheeled it away, they could be unobservant and rude when challenged or simply an uncaring wanker but we are always going to encounter people who don't behave as well as they should, they won't ever change

Yes I'm horrified that people are defending someone who stole a walking aid from a disabled person from right outside the disabled toilets.

Where the fuck is your bar set?!

So then surely you understand that some people need to go to the toilet urgently and that it's not ok to take their things while they are in the toilet as they are theirs not yours

Ariela · 23/10/2024 08:15

How rude!

However, I would have shoved some random nearby items in the trolley before going to the loo given the trolley shortage, and replaced them once out myself.
Not that I like shopping in Ikea, I have been known to drive and hour and a half to one and turn round in the car park due to the queue.

iNoticed · 23/10/2024 08:17

Attelina · 22/10/2024 22:43

You left the trolley unattended and a walking stick is not a right to claim it as being yours.

The woman took it believing it had been discarded.

She gave it back to you when you told her what has happened.

Hardly worth creating a big drama out of it.

In future, go to the toilet before collecting a trolley.

I’m interested now - what would lay a claim to the trolley in your mind? I thought it was any item…

Would a full shop of items show it was being used? How about ten items? 5? A handbag? Personal but empty shopping bags? A child?

Or would you have taken it in all those instances unless OP’s hands were physically on the trolley?

As I was pointing out, I'm not that trusting and grab my coat and bring it with me.

Even if we gave them the benefit of the doubt over taking the trolley, shoving the trolley at OP is unreasonable. In some ways, the worst part is that they didn't think anything of running off with someone's much needed mobility aid (and they had no idea how much they needed it).

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 23/10/2024 08:21

Blimey. If I was in need of a trolley, the one with someone's mobility aid parked outside of the toilet would definitely not register as available. Exactly how closely do I have to stick to my shopping trolley in future? If I take two steps away from it in a crowded aisle, will I hear a "YOINK!" from behind me, and turn fo find someone sprinting off with it, shouting "you snooze, you lose, sucker!", scattering the items I already put in it in their wake?

Is this what people are trying to prevent when they sprawl in front of the shelf I need to get to, with their trolley held at arm's length, clogging up as much of the aisle as possible? I always assumed it's just thoughtlessness, but maybe these people are genuinely concerned that if they take their hand off the trolley, it will be gone 🤔

Littletreefrog · 23/10/2024 08:22

AlwaysTheRenegade · 23/10/2024 00:52

She didn't steal it though, did she? OP asked for it back and the woman gave it back...unless I missed part of the post? And op got the last trolley, there must have been a few abandoned inside. I get it was annoying but no more than that...she gave it straight back..?

Oh I didn't realise if someone took something without consent then only returned it when challenged its not stealing. I'll have to remember that defense for the police next time I fancy a bit of shop lifting.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 23/10/2024 08:22

The replies on this thread are depressing. The OP wasn't reserving a trolley with her stick, she had a trolley then needed to use the loo right then because she has a stoma. All the people saying she should have gone to the loo in advance or, should have somehow planned it better are ableist and need to educate themselves. All the other people saying a full trolley with a walking stick left outside a disabled toilet is fair game...and telling the OP she is mistaken that the woman pushed it into her, are really rude in my opinion

Matronic6 · 23/10/2024 08:24

I am both sad but not surprised at some of the replies on this thread. How is a trolley with a walking stick in it outside the toilets not to be perceived as anything other than in use by someone with mobility issues.

Even if you were a complete idiot and couldn't come the to the conclusion that it was clearly being used by someone and assumed someone had just left it behind, surely you would give the walking stick to a member of staff?
Why would anyone just walk off with it?

And for those saying you 'can't claim a trolley as yours by putting your belongings in it' when exactly does it become clear that a trolley is in use? I've seen plenty of people leave their trolleys for a minute or two whilst they go and grab something from another aisle or at the line for the till. Does that mean anyone else who comes along and sees it's not with someone can just take the trolley and whatever is in it?

Bubblybits · 23/10/2024 08:25

Some people really showing their true colours on this thread, and they’re not pretty 😬 I can’t ever imagine taking a trolley outside a disabled toilet, with a walking stick in it. And I’m really glad that it wouldn’t even cross my mind to do so - if I even considered it, I’d be so disappointed in myself.

Thenose · 23/10/2024 08:27

You were in the right. Some people are so unfuckingbelievable, they can make you question your own sanity.

Willwetalk · 23/10/2024 08:28

Oktagrammata · 22/10/2024 22:49

Go to toilet before collecting a trolley?
Do you have a stoma?.. do you go to loo when you don't really need to.. just in case?
Get real and educate yourself.

I have a stoma and use a walking stick. I couldn't be arsed to get so angry at the loss of 'my ' trolley and certainly would not be able to walk around looking for it - because I now don't have a stick, which is far more annoying.

PennyApril54 · 23/10/2024 08:30

Is there any chance she didn't see the walking stick? I suppose sometimes they do kind of blend in. Might explain why she looked so baffled when you asked for it back?

InfiniteTeas · 23/10/2024 08:31

There are some really unnerving replies on this thread. If a lot of posters aren't just trolling, then a worryingly high number of people have a complete 'fuck everyone who isn't me - if I want to do something, I will' attitude. The trolley had a bloody walking stick in it. What level of selfishness and entitlement is required to waltz off with a disability aid because 'finders keepers' and 'you snooze - or wee - you lose'? And then to be an arsehole when challenged by the owner of the disability aid you've just removed?Good job the OP didn't have a guide dog and leave it with the trolley, or they would presumably have been fair game too.
I can only assume the mental gymnastics involved in coming up with justifications for the behaviour indicate how attached people are to the view that they should be able to do what the fuck they want, no matter what impact it has on others. I can't imagine functioning like this.

AnellaA · 23/10/2024 08:34

op that is awful , what a cow!

I think I’d have wailed and fallen down and said, “oooohhhh the lady pushed my trolley into my hip, oh please help I’ve been attacked… her , her that fat lady over there with the awful bleached hair and !” And made a right fuss.

Highly unlikely, unless, of course she has very limited sight, which is always a possibility. I have not read the whole thread, so do not know if the cubicle was big enough to hold the trolley. I have had to do the same, and take the trolley into the disabled toilet with me. The lady was totally in the wrong to push the trolley into the OP though. She could have really hurt her.

diddl · 23/10/2024 08:38

Even if she hadn't noticed the stick or for some reason thought that it had been left behind there was no need to be so rude.

She had a friend with a trolley so it's not as if taking her stuff out left her carrying it!

^ Astonishing. Did you not read the OP explaining she has a stoma and uses the disabled facilities? Do you know what life is like with a stoma? How would you feel if this was you?

LBFseBrom · 23/10/2024 08:40

I am gobsmacked. Honestly, some people! The walking stick would have been a clue but what would she have done at checkout, paid for what you put in? I'm glad you found her.
