Can't believe what happened... was l in the right?

Oktagrammata · 22/10/2024 22:32

Went to IKEA today... hardly any trolleys in the trolley bay .. but just manage to get last one.
I put my walking stick in the trolley.
Needed loo.. went to disabled loo..( l have a stoma). left my trolley outside with my walking stick in.. thinking surely no one will take my trolley.
Comes out of loo and trolley is gone.
Asks the security guy and a member of staff I'd they had seen it/ moved it.. they hadn't.
So l start walking... to look for it..
See a woman in the next section pushing my trolley .. with some items she had put in.
I explain she has my trolley with my walking stick in.
She looks at me like I'm mad but doesn't say a word. Takes out my walking stick and hands it to me.
I say.. " can you please take your items out of my trolley and let me have it back please".
She huffs and puffs.. but doesn't speak. Put her items into her friends trolley and pushes my trolley to me so hard it bangs into me.

She took it with a walking stick in it???????

Of course it wasn't still your trolley if you just abandoned it outside the lavatories.

Edited

She hadn’t abandoned it, she had left it outside the toilets while she went in as you can’t take it in with you. I’d never take a trolley left outside the toilets (especially not with someone’s belonging in it!!!) even empty as they are usually left their so someone ca pop to the loo!! Thought that was fairly obvious.

MummyMags3 · 23/10/2024 18:46

My husband uses the disabled loo’s as he has a stoma. If it needs emptying it needs doing fairly quickly and you cannot really do it anywhere but a disabled loo as you need a private wash hand basin for one thing. However, most disabled loos are fairly big , and I feel certain that you can get a trolley in there with you. Especially if it’s the smaller type of trolley. I use a four wheeled walker as I have mobility issues and that goes in with me and I have once or twice taken my wheel chair in there. So I can not see why you couldnt take a trolly in with you.

It doesn’t matter though really. You don’t take a trolley outside a loo, and certainly not one with someone’s belongings in it.

FlipFlopVibe · 23/10/2024 21:12

I’m dying that there’s some defending the trolley thief 😂 can you imagine the actual conversation between said thief and the friend

”Oh Bertha, didn’t know you had started using a walking stick, are you alright?”

”Me? Noooo, I just lifted it from a disabled person, came with a free trolley”

Lucy25 · 23/10/2024 21:30

@MummyMags3 You should be able to leave a shopping trolley, outside a toilet, without someone taking it, with belongings in.It’s different if you take your own personal shopping trolley in, to a toilet area, not a supermarket one though, that’s just unhygienic because other shoppers will be using that same trolley.

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 23/10/2024 21:38

Attelina · 22/10/2024 22:43

You left the trolley unattended and a walking stick is not a right to claim it as being yours.

The woman took it believing it had been discarded.

She gave it back to you when you told her what has happened.

Hardly worth creating a big drama out of it.

In future, go to the toilet before collecting a trolley.

So the walking stick thief was in her rights to steal the OP's walking stick too? What if she couldn't walk unaided and was then left stranded at the toilets? Would that have also been her right?

The ppl on the thread who think taking a trolley outside the loo with a walking stick in it is ok, are halfwits

JohnTheRevelator · 23/10/2024 22:52

What kind of person walks off with someone's walking stick?!

your comment is deeply offensive

No it isn’t. Maybe it offends you and your view of Christianity but it doesn’t offend everyone, not even every Christian. I’m a Christian and what offends me on this thread is the deeply un-Christian attitude exhibited by some of the posters to a disabled person. I reckon Jesus would agree with me too.

That’s flattering them. They are in fact fuckwits.

That’s as bad as the people who sit down at Costco meal courts because a family member is placing an order. Bugger to those who already have their food and looking to sit down and eat it while still hot/warm.

That's why a lot of food courts and cafes have signs saying please find a table before you order. They don't want people wandering around with food with nowhere to sit. It's a perfectly reasonable thing to do, to make sure you'll have somewhere to sit and eat instead of hovering around and staring at people for 10 minutes.

Gosh reading these comments has made me realise how 'naice' my local sainsburys is - I did exactly this this very morning (minus the walking stick). Got a trolley, pushed ot to the entrance to the toilets, went in and trolley was waiting for.me when I returned.

Agree that the ignorance on this thread re disabled people is grim

This is normal, I do it all the time (try fitting a power chair, a shopping trolly and a child in a toilet cubical!)… I’ve never known some twat take the trolly.

BeNavyCrab · 24/10/2024 11:49

Some people are just rude and ignorant. I'm a wheelchair user and I was unfortunately in a situation similar. I was shopping with my husband and suddenly needed the toilet but when I got to the disabled toilet, it had been partly used as a storage area, with large plastic bins in it. There wasn't enough space to manoeuvre my wheelchair inside, so my husband helped me to walk the few steps from outside the cubicle to the toilet. It's severely painful and difficult for me but it was the only way I was getting to a toilet. It meant leaving my wheelchair unattended outside the room, as I need help from another person while using the loo.

On coming out of the toilet, about two minutes later and being supported by my husband again, I was desperate to be seated in my chair, only to see it wasn't there. A young boy of approximately 11 to 13 years old was rapidly wheeling in it down the long corridor and trying to tip it backwards and balance in it. Meanwhile his mum was stood there watching him, carrying a toddler on her hip. She was waiting to come into the changing room to use the baby change table, I think.

When I asked the boy to please stop playing with it and bring me my chair back, the mum looked at me and said "Well you shouldn't have f**cking left it outside if you didn't want anyone to use it!!"😱

The boy smirked, really slowly wheeled it back towards us, got out and then deliberately tipped it over backwards with a crash.

The Mum marched off with her kids, giving my husband a long mouthful of abuse, when he'd said that a wheelchair isn't a toy! She yelled at the top of her voice "Disabled C*nts like should stay home and stop getting in everyone's way!!"

By this point I was struggling to stay conscious from the pain and my husband couldn't let go of me to be able to right the wheelchair and get me seated. Luckily another customer had seen and heard the problem and came over to do it, before I fainted.

I was in too much physical distress to be able to go get help from a security guard or even process what felt like hate from her. I was more relieved that my wheelchair wasn't damaged because it's expensive and custom made.

To whom do you believe this comment to be deeply offensive?
If you find it offensive then I'd suggest you say "I find your comment offensive" rather than a blanket statement saying that 'your comment is deeply offensive' as you don't speak for everyone and the latter is speaking for more than just you.

I'm a Christian, was brought up in a Christian faith and I thought it was very funny.

I am so sorry you experienced that. It's appalling behaviour.

I can understand your inability to process/act on what had happened at the time.

What shocks me is that nobody intervened (apart from the person who rescued the wheelchair).

Had I been there I'd have been calling the Police never mind giving mother an absolute tongue lashing.

There are some right dicks out there.

What you can absolutely do is leave a really shitty one-star review of that place because they shouldn't be using the accessible loo as a storeroom and have discriminated against you by doing so. Also, report them to Trading Standards because they have failed to provide the services you are paying for.

BeNavyCrab · 25/10/2024 15:09

@BreadInCaptivity Thank you, I'm one of those people who always wants to be polite and avoid embarrassment, so some times like that I am busy looking for a rock to hide under. It does hurt though, obviously or I wouldn't post it on a forum years later. I do wonder what had happened to her, to make her respond so aggressively.

@MaidOfAle You are absolutely right, there's no point in a disabled loo that's been made unusable. We certainly won't be returning in a hurry.

JFC what is wrong with you? You cant take a trolley in the toilet, it isnt unreasonable to expect a trolley not to be taken by someone else when it quite plainly has been taken?
