Can't believe what happened... was l in the right?

Went to IKEA today... hardly any trolleys in the trolley bay .. but just manage to get last one.
I put my walking stick in the trolley.
Needed loo.. went to disabled loo..( l have a stoma). left my trolley outside with my walking stick in.. thinking surely no one will take my trolley.
Comes out of loo and trolley is gone.
Asks the security guy and a member of staff I'd they had seen it/ moved it.. they hadn't.
So l start walking... to look for it..
See a woman in the next section pushing my trolley .. with some items she had put in.
I explain she has my trolley with my walking stick in.
She looks at me like I'm mad but doesn't say a word. Takes out my walking stick and hands it to me.
I say.. " can you please take your items out of my trolley and let me have it back please".
She huffs and puffs.. but doesn't speak. Put her items into her friends trolley and pushes my trolley to me so hard it bangs into me.

Of course it wasn't still your trolley if you just abandoned it outside the lavatories.

Edited

she had her walking stick in it and was using the disabled bathroom!

AlwaysTheRenegade · 23/10/2024 00:52

She didn't steal it though, did she? OP asked for it back and the woman gave it back...unless I missed part of the post? And op got the last trolley, there must have been a few abandoned inside. I get it was annoying but no more than that...she gave it straight back..?

So if you get caught, having stolen something, and you give it back, you aren't a thief?

She wasn't "hogging it", she got to the trolleys first and took one, as is customary! I imagine someone who needs a walking stick has more need for a trolley anyway. Do you expect a disabled person to walk back outside to get a trolley after going to the loo? So stupid.

The person who nicked it was being unreasonable and she didn't like being caught.

It had her walking stick in it. If it was outside the loo it was obviously taken 🙄

Seymour5 · 23/10/2024 07:19

The loos in our local Ikea are a long way from the trolleys. You pick one up on your way in. Reading this thread suggests there must be people who go into the store without a trolley in case they need to visit the loos, then come back to the carpark level to get a trolley later.

Most people wouldn’t. Especially people for whom walking may be difficult. Anyone with half a brain seeing a trolley, with a walking stick in it, by a loo (especially a disabled loo) would grasp the most likely scenario, wouldn’t they?

She thought someone had discarded their walking stick after being magically healed by IKEA Jesus and thought she could maybe take it home with her?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm so sorry you've had this experience.
It does remind me of a time last year when DH had a bad back injury meaning he needed a lot of support for a few weeks and we were in our local Tesco one day and fully grown adults were gawping at him. I was well practised in a very scathing look at those individuals.

Oh my goodness that’s disgusting, so sorry you went through that. You wonder what these adults are teaching their own children if they have the capacity to behave like that!

Geranen · 23/10/2024 07:23

Nutcases defending this nasty chancer who took someone else's trolley and couldn't even admit with a good grace that she'd been a wanker. So odd.

cofefefela · 23/10/2024 07:26

I think everyone is in the wrong here:

Firstly you can’t “reserve” a trolley with your walking stick, you totally made this “trolley reservation” rule up yourself. You therefore can’t be surprised if another person didn’t understand your self-made reservation rule and thought the trolley was discarded instead, so used it. Never leave your belongings unattended, ever. That’s common sense. You knew the trolleys were in high demand, as there weren’t many trolleys left as you took the last one - you should have considered that someone may want to use the trolley you left unattended. I personally wouldn’t leave any of my belongings unattended like this where someone else could take them. You have to take some responsibility for what happened here.

The other shopper was clearly annoyed at you and put out when you confronted them. It isn’t on to push the trolley into you.

However chances are if there were free trolleys left at the trolley rack, the other shopper may have used those instead. So the store needs to sort itself out too. I think in future if you were in this situation you’d be better off taking your walking stick into the bathroom with you and leaving the trolley, and if the trolley wasn’t there when you leave the bathroom, ask staff for help in getting another trolley. It’s just a trolley, and ikea would have loads of them at their self checkouts. I’m sure seeing someone needing a mobility aid, they could get someone to bring you one.

LoveTheRainAndSun · 22/10/2024 23:47

That's more a marker that someone is still there and has just got up, so no, I wouldn't sit there then. Would wonder if someone had forgotten their coat, but wouldn't assume it.

Just leaving food on the table - risky.

ps - you're more trusting than me. I'd not trust that someone wouldn't steal my coat. I'm not getting up till I'm done unless someone is with me to keep an eye on things.

Edited

But sometimes people have medical conditions where they urgently need the toilet. You say the coat is a marker do you not think op leaving a walking stick in the trolley is also a marker

AuldSpookySewers · 23/10/2024 07:37

Fuck me! 😱😱

I can’t believe the number of selfish entitled arseholes who would see a trolley OUTSIDE THE DISABLED TOILET , with a WALKING AID inside it and decide that they can steal it away because they can’t be bothered to WALK easily without needing an aid and go and look for another one.

You people should be thoroughly ashamed of your selfish ways! 🤬

How many staff actually hang around the IKEA toilets? And how can the trolley thief have known that the OP (who left the trolley outside a disabled toilet) was able to move around without her stick or a trolley to lean on? Come on now.

PandoraSox · 23/10/2024 07:41

This thread really has brought out some gobsmackingly unpleasant posters.

CappuccinoChocolate · 23/10/2024 07:42

Is it a 'thing', a sport even, that perhaps members like to come on threads like this and deliberately give contrary views? This is getting ridiculous. Some of you must be on a wind up!

SidekickSylvia · 23/10/2024 07:43

There is no way that I would see a trolley parked outside a disabled toilet, with a walking stick in it and think 'Yeah, that'll do, I'll have that one'.

I can’t believe some of the awful comments. They are clearly the arseholes we encounter.

This !
However, there's no way I would have taken it.

MushMonster · 23/10/2024 07:45

You are 100% right and well done for standing up for yourself!

I cannot believe that there are some people claiming a trolley left outside the toilets WITH A WALKING STICK IN IT is not taken!

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/10/2024 07:46

If I needed the toilet I personally would get my trolley after I’d been. But still this woman sounds horrible! I hope you’re ok.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 23/10/2024 07:47

Obviously the 'opportunist' was not a seasoned criminal, otherwise she'd have ditched the walking stick pronto to make herself difficult to trace. I do think a bike alarm attached to the walking stick might have been a wise addition - it would have scared the be-Ikea-jesus out of any would-be thieves.

FrostFlowers2025 · 23/10/2024 07:48

Well done for standing up for yourself!

She knew what she was doing. She huffed and puffed because she was disappointed she wasn't getting away with it.

2Old2Tango · 23/10/2024 07:50

Attelina · 22/10/2024 22:43

You left the trolley unattended and a walking stick is not a right to claim it as being yours.

The woman took it believing it had been discarded.

She gave it back to you when you told her what has happened.

Hardly worth creating a big drama out of it.

In future, go to the toilet before collecting a trolley.

Fine in a perfect world. However, the toilets aren't always near the entrance and in this instance the OP has mobility issues. Also, she has already mentioned it was the last trolley. If she'd gone to the toilet first she'd have missed out.

you shouldn't have taken a trolly with a disabled person's stick in it. Especially when you were with a friend who had a trolley.

You need to learn some manners.
