Can't believe what happened... was l in the right?

Went to IKEA today... hardly any trolleys in the trolley bay .. but just manage to get last one.
I put my walking stick in the trolley.
Needed loo.. went to disabled loo..( l have a stoma). left my trolley outside with my walking stick in.. thinking surely no one will take my trolley.
Comes out of loo and trolley is gone.
Asks the security guy and a member of staff I'd they had seen it/ moved it.. they hadn't.
So l start walking... to look for it..
See a woman in the next section pushing my trolley .. with some items she had put in.
I explain she has my trolley with my walking stick in.
She looks at me like I'm mad but doesn't say a word. Takes out my walking stick and hands it to me.
I say.. " can you please take your items out of my trolley and let me have it back please".
She huffs and puffs.. but doesn't speak. Put her items into her friends trolley and pushes my trolley to me so hard it bangs into me.

This thread shows both the best of MN and the worst of MN, and demonstrates why society is fucked. Who would see a trolley outside the disabled toilet with a walking stick in it no less and think I’ll have that, and who in their right mind would defend them?

Cunts, that's who Grin

You are absolutely right and the awful thing is, that I am no longer surprised at people who behave in this way

Yeah, imagine giving people the benefit of the doubt. It's an awful way to behave 🙄

Then you should understand the problem.

When I was a middle manager in a Scottish high school, we made specific toilet provision for a pupil with Crohn's, because there was no guarantee that he'd be able to get through an exam or a lesson without needing urgent access to a lavatory.

I only have IBS, and that's bad enough when I have a flare up.

I understand some people can't wait but I'm lucky enough to generally not be one of them. I also know that if I have to go to the bathroom, I gather up my stuff to take with me and pack up my food because I'm not that trusting. Not that any of this is really relevant.

If you really have to run and can't take that time, then I guess you chance it with your food and table. I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to think the table just hasn't been cleared (it takes ages if you don't clear your own at our IKEA and some cafes) or for a member of staff to come along and clear it. Maybe they can wait a while if it's obvious the food hasn't been touched much. Maybe a good technique is to get a coat you don't mind having stolen and leave it on the table with your food?

crumblingschools · 23/10/2024 01:51

@EatingHealthy so let’s give this person the benefit of the doubt, and they accidentally took the trolley thinking it was abandoned. Do you not think they would have apologised and not pushed the trolley so hard it hit the OP

Apologise for what? Giving the person the benefit of the doubt, means that, from their perspective, they're just using a trolley the OP has forgotten her walking stick was in. What is there to apologise for?

In spite of that, they've acquiesced to the OP's demand that she has some kind of supreme right to this ikea trolley and returned it to her (OP's own words "pushes my trolley to me"), in so doing OP gets knocked by the trolley, it's hardly proof of intent.

GoldenLegend · 23/10/2024 02:46

it a thing in Germany that if you leave your trolley unattended, people will take stuff they want out of your trolley!

Thedogismybaby · 23/10/2024 03:11

I just want to say op, as a fellow crip, I am sorry this happened. You're either ignored or you're mistreated, its enough to make you never want to leave the house. Well done for challenging the CF. Well done.

Rocketmanjan · 23/10/2024 03:12

Of course you’re not being unreasonable OP! A trolley with someone’s personal belongings surely means it is being used? They don’t sell walking sticks at IKEA either!

Why on earth would you walk away with a trolley with walking stick in it anyway, surely you would realise someone needs it for their mobility?

Genuinely surprised at the posters thinking the other party are in the right!

Attelina · 22/10/2024 22:43

You left the trolley unattended and a walking stick is not a right to claim it as being yours.

The woman took it believing it had been discarded.

She gave it back to you when you told her what has happened.

Hardly worth creating a big drama out of it.

In future, go to the toilet before collecting a trolley.

What an unpleasant post

People really are arseholes sometimes, sorry you encountered one today.
Of course you were right.

Some of the people on this thread as well.

Probably. Hard to believe some of the ridiculous replies on this thread.

The trolley thief was totally in the wrong.

I had this recently in IKEA. Was half way round the marketplace with several items in my trolley. Parked it at end of aisle to get some bits, came back and trolley was gone.

A staff member helped me look for it but said it happens all the time. People forget to get a trolley, can’t be bothered to go back and just take someone else’s!! He found the contents of my trolley dumped on a nearby display. So bloody rude!!

You're one of those annoying people who leave their trolley cluttering up the aisles and wander off, I'm glad it was taken. Maybe take your trolley with you!!

ILoveMyCaravan · 23/10/2024 03:52

I use disabled toilets but take the trolley in with me, there is usually room to do this. Unless of course I have items in it that I haven't yet paid for.

She shouldn't have taken it if it's parked outside a disabled loo but to push it into you is disgusting. That would have caused me terrible pain that would last for days.

Your reply hits the nail on the head. Either deductive reasoning skills are nonexistent or a “me first” attitude controls their thinking.

At my nearest IKEA the trollies are in the middle of the underground car park. Toilets are up the escalators on level 1.

No one in their right mind would lock the car, walk straight past the tonnes of trollies right there, all the way to L1, then turn around and go all the way back down to the carpark 😂

Thanks - I needed a new username!

I can sort of understand that someone might think someone might have accidentally left their stick in a trolley, but surely you’d ask a nearby staff member not just walk off with the trolley?

For IKEAJesus 😊

Shushquite · 23/10/2024 04:15

I'm sorry op, she was 100% in the wrong. First for stealing your walking stick and then to bang you with the trolley. Next time either threaten or actually call the police on evil people like that.

She hitting you with an object is not legal, neither is stealing your walking stick.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/10/2024 04:46

TheShellBeach · 22/10/2024 22:38

Of course it wasn't still your trolley if you just abandoned it outside the lavatories.

Edited

There is always one on here isn't there.
What's she supposed to do....take it into the cubicle with her?
She left her stick in it. Would you just randomly walk off with someone's disability aid?
Grow up for God's sake.

Actually I think walking off with someones walking stick is a very big deal. The op had to walk around without it. Presumably she needs the stick so walking without it was probably difficult/painful/risky.

Marchitectmummy · 23/10/2024 05:13

You came across a pretty ignorant woman unfortunately, pleased ypu got your trolley back.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/10/2024 05:20

AlwaysTheRenegade · 23/10/2024 00:52

She didn't steal it though, did she? OP asked for it back and the woman gave it back...unless I missed part of the post? And op got the last trolley, there must have been a few abandoned inside. I get it was annoying but no more than that...she gave it straight back..?

Op had to spend time looking for it and during this time she didn’t have use of her stick

initially the woman didn’t give the trolley back

the woman begrudgingly gave it back later

CameronStrike · 23/10/2024 05:38

At most supermarkets the toilets are inside and the trolleys outside. The toilets usually have some space outside them where people do leave trolleys when they are using the loo. Also trolleys usually need a coin or token to release. Anyone with any common sense knows a trolley outside a toilet (especially one with something as obvious as a walking stick in it) is waiting for its 'owner' to use the loo. Grabbing a random trolley (again, with a walking stick in it!!) is either utterly gormless or selfish behaviour.

Copperoliverbear · 23/10/2024 05:56

You were right and I would have knocked the trolley back into her as I was turning around.
