Went to IKEA today... hardly any trolleys in the trolley bay .. but just manage to get last one.
I put my walking stick in the trolley.
Needed loo.. went to disabled loo..( l have a stoma). left my trolley outside with my walking stick in.. thinking surely no one will take my trolley.
Comes out of loo and trolley is gone.
Asks the security guy and a member of staff I'd they had seen it/ moved it.. they hadn't.
So l start walking... to look for it..
See a woman in the next section pushing my trolley .. with some items she had put in.
I explain she has my trolley with my walking stick in.
She looks at me like I'm mad but doesn't say a word. Takes out my walking stick and hands it to me.
I say.. " can you please take your items out of my trolley and let me have it back please".
She huffs and puffs.. but doesn't speak. Put her items into her friends trolley and pushes my trolley to me so hard it bangs into me.

It was left just outside the disabled toilet, in a trolley. It does not mean that the holder could not manage to walk a few steps into the toilet unaided. It would be a problem for the OP, no doubt, to have taken it in with her, only for it to fall on the floor. So no, I would not argue as to why it was left in the trolley.

Thank you. This would have been exactly the situation with my late husband.

After his stroke, he only had one good hand, so couldn't take his stick in with him. He could manage a few steps without falling over.

Can only hope the people defending this appalling behaviour are in fact random 12 year olds.

As my late husband used to say, they might find out for themselves some day.

Of course it wasn't still your trolley if you just abandoned it outside the lavatories.

And the prize for today's tone-deaf post goes to......

Possibly the trolley thief assumed trolley had been abandoned by someone and had forgotten to remove their walking stick.
I don't think anyone would callously steal a trolley if they genuinely thought someone was using it!

Very true.

rainfallpurevividcat · 23/10/2024 14:29

My DM (85) has a stick but I would definitely hold it for her while she goes to the loo.

IKEA Jesus was probably busy stuffing meatballs thinking "fuck this - didn't die to save sinners who steal a disabled persons trolley and walking stick. I'm gonna have to tell Dad I'm done saving people with more front than a row of Billy Bookcases".

your comment is deeply offensive

DizzyBumble · 23/10/2024 15:09

gosh i've been an accidental trolley thief. Got to the till & suddenly realised when DH started to unload onto the belt that it wasn't our trolley

More offensive than the comments blaming the disabled OP and taking the side of the woman that stole her trolley and walking stick and then pushed the trolley into her in a fit of temper?

But would you have huffed agd puffed, refused to give the trolley back agd then rammed into the person??

A mistake is a mistake. Not a problem.
The way those women reacted? Utterly wrong

I don’t know a lot of people who ‘forget’ their walking stick tbh Not just next to the toilets and the cafe.

Unless you expect that many people who use a walking stick don’t need them??

ComingBackHome · 23/10/2024 17:07

You could argue that if the person needs to use a walking stick why have they left it in the trolley?

@Soontobe60 because they wanted to leave a sign that the trolley was someone’s trolley, not just dumped?
And many people with mobility issues will use the trolley as a mobility aid (a bit like a walker) instead of the stick so having a ‘do not take’ sign was even more important.

It had her stick in it, how could it not be hers.

Not entirely true: women can also suddenly acquire the "pregnancy and maternity" Equality Act protected characteristic against their will.

Gosh reading these comments has made me realise how 'naice' my local sainsburys is - I did exactly this this very morning (minus the walking stick). Got a trolley, pushed ot to the entrance to the toilets, went in and trolley was waiting for.me when I returned.

Agree that the ignorance on this thread re disabled people is grim

angela1952 · 23/10/2024 17:48

I once had a trolley taken in Tesco when I was half way through my shop, I’d done all the fresh food. Staff told me that it isn’t unusual for this to happen. I had a good look round but no luck. They obviously fancied my meals for the week.

itsgettingweird · 23/10/2024 18:03

What kind of ignorant fucker takes a trolley with a walking stick in it from outside a disabled loo?

Well done you for standing up for yourself - I'm I'm so Angry on your behalf you had to.

Being able to leave a trolley outside the loo and it’s there when you come out is a mark of a civilised society. As is offering one’s seat to someone who obviously needs it, holding a door open for the person behind, or letting a shopper with only a couple of items through the checkout first when you have a full trolley. Little unselfish gestures that make daily life a little more pleasant.

Nightjar33 · 23/10/2024 18:14

I think it’s shocking that someone who can clearly see a walking stick would take that trolley.
cant understand why some posts support the person who did
glad you confronted her

MummyMags3 · 23/10/2024 18:46

My husband uses the disabled loo’s as he has a stoma. If it needs emptying it needs doing fairly quickly and you cannot really do it anywhere but a disabled loo as you need a private wash hand basin for one thing. However, most disabled loos are fairly big , and I feel certain that you can get a trolley in there with you. Especially if it’s the smaller type of trolley. I use a four wheeled walker as I have mobility issues and that goes in with me and I have once or twice taken my wheel chair in there. So I can not see why you couldnt take a trolly in with you.

So she assaulted a disabled person with a trolley? It will be on CCTV

Deeperthantheocean · 23/10/2024 19:14

Plain disgusting, it's obvious it belongs to someone who had gone to the loo and needs a stick to help with walking. Either completely stupid or rude/selfish.

Oktagrammata · 23/10/2024 19:17

Ikea don't have small trolleys.
The disabled toilet also had a bed and hoist in..
I did look if was room for trolley.. why wouldn't l?
But there wasn't
