A loud bang looked at and the house across was on fire.

We get rats in our attic every winter (only momentarily until they are dispatched, we live on a farm so always rats somewhere). When we hear them, it sounds like they are rolling a ball up and down the floorboards. I can’t help but imagine it’s the skull of one of their ancestors. Grim. 😂 Hope your neighbours were okay!

'Mummy, DD2 has the Sudocrem'

Ours, an end of terrace, was struck by lightning and by fuck, it was loud. It blew all the electrics, melted the phone and killed the telly, but the ancient video recorder survived. All the neighbours came out, it was very early hours, 1990.

Oh god this happened in our house, too.

Me. Trying to get out of bed in the morning. Those Wimbledon tennis players whisper their grunts in comparison 😬

rockingbird · 21/10/2024 21:50

I was once woken up by an earthquake and that was the scariest thing ever with two babies in the house 😳

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 21/10/2024 21:51

When the kitchen ceiling came down in the night. Oh god the dust!!!

MissCherryCakeyBun · 21/10/2024 21:52

The noise that came from my throat when I answered the phone to my brother early one morning and he said "it's Dad" I know exactly what keening sounds like now... it's such a devastating sound
I miss my dad so very much I was always a daddy's girl and the loss of him 13 years ago still hurts

Ha, I see that and raise you, DD2 has got the metanium

Otherwise, the Canary Wharf bomb, honestly thought a couple of HGVs had somehow had a collision outside my house on a residential side street

Dartmoorcheffy · 21/10/2024 21:53

The sound of the very new tv and unit crashing to the floor when our idiot dogs decided to go nuts at the postman last week.

toomuchcardboard · 21/10/2024 21:53

Hurricane of 1987. The wind was screaming, it was utterly terrifying.

romdowa · 21/10/2024 21:54

I lived in a bungalow on top of a hill during a red warning storm and hearing the eaves in the roof creaking from the force of the wind has to be the most frightening noise I've ever heard in general. Never mind from my house.

HappiestSleeping · 21/10/2024 21:55

I had a curry once, and .........

15 years ago the sound of a transit van driving into my living room window/ wall

Richelieu · 21/10/2024 21:58

A huge bang that woke everyone up in the small hours - we had family visiting and everybody was out of bed blearily asking 'what the hell was that?' We had no idea but could see what seemed like the glow of a fire in the sky in the far distance; we thought there might have been a plane crash.

Later that morning we discovered it was the Buncefield oil refinery a few miles away from us that had exploded and caused the gigantic noise and fire.

Pinkypup · 21/10/2024 21:59

When Buncefield oil depot blew up - as the crow flies we lived about 8 miles away and we felt the boom which woke us up. You could see the glow of the fire from the window as well. We got up and put the news on and there was nothing about it, which was so weird. We thought we were being bombed!

Justwantosay · 21/10/2024 22:00

The Paw Patrol theme tune after one of the DCs sat on the remote sending the tv volume to max!

Omg that’s so freaky!!! What are the odds?!

my mum was on the next room and didn’t hear a thing 😂

GrowAndGreen · 21/10/2024 22:01

Hailstones the size of golfballs smashing car windows and coming in the house through the vacant air conditioning ducts on the not-quite-finished newbuild we'd moved into 2 weeks prior (AbuDhabi 1981)

Shhhthedogssleeping · 21/10/2024 22:02

Was woken up by my downstairs neighbour hammering on my door early morning, to tell me water was leaking into her flat from mine. I heard what sounded like Niagara Falls from inside my airing cupboard. The large and ancient water tank had completely corroded. I opened the door and was horrified at the volume of water gushing out. I’d not long since moved in (had just been homed by council after being homeless for 2 years ) and had no clue where the stopcock was. Neighbour below ran to her Mums over the road to ask her, as she had no clue where stopcock was either. Thankfully both our flats weren’t badly damaged. After that I really feel for people whose homes are repeatedly flooded. This was at least a one- off and was clean water, but felt scary enough.

StrictlyNumber1 · 21/10/2024 22:03

When a fighter jet flew over our house. I have never known a noise like it. It was terrifying

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/10/2024 22:03

A 3am pah-hah-erhh-aaaaa right on top of my head/over my forehead. You know the furball sound in your sleep.

The biggest sound was an underground explosion half a mile away, but that was more feeling it than hearing it, except for the squawking of thousands of birds taking off in fright just afterwards.

The loudest, longest and most soul destroying sound was when they decided to build on some old garages a couple of doors down. The area is part of an old river system (still runs deep underground and pops up as a winter bourne occasionally) and part of the initial prep for the building was pile driving about 30 foot down. It took five months, mostly starting at 6am Mon-Sat, and not only were things falling off surfaces and pictures falling off the walls, the ceiling developed a large crack and part of the garden sunk a foot.
