A loud bang looked at and the house across was on fire.

Driving piles for our extension - horrendous for us and the whole street! Made our teeth chatter!

In lock down, outside in the garden in the sunshine, suddenly and randomly, it seemed like all the neighbourhood children were outside all at the same time and the combined panoramic sounds of their laughing / screaming / crying felt so loud and intrusive, swirling around my head it made me want to scream myself. I went inside and started looking at Rightmove. Bought noise-cancelling headphones instead, in the end.

Edited

Not children for me but our two next door neighbours (who were and are great mates) taking it in turns to play music throughout that sunshine-filled, unseasonably warm lockdown. And we couldn't escape because lockdown

In this house it was the bang when the gas bottle exploded in the caravan that was in the woods near us. It didn't end well for the poor man that was living in it. In my old house it was the screams of rabbits being killed by foxes, it sounds surprisingly human.

Ours, an end of terrace, was struck by lightning and by fuck, it was loud. It blew all the electrics, melted the phone and killed the telly, but the ancient video recorder survived. All the neighbours came out, it was very early hours, 1990.

Was this in a village beginning with L?

A 3am pah-hah-erhh-aaaaa right on top of my head/over my forehead. You know the furball sound in your sleep.

The biggest sound was an underground explosion half a mile away, but that was more feeling it than hearing it, except for the squawking of thousands of birds taking off in fright just afterwards.

The loudest, longest and most soul destroying sound was when they decided to build on some old garages a couple of doors down. The area is part of an old river system (still runs deep underground and pops up as a winter bourne occasionally) and part of the initial prep for the building was pile driving about 30 foot down. It took five months, mostly starting at 6am Mon-Sat, and not only were things falling off surfaces and pictures falling off the walls, the ceiling developed a large crack and part of the garden sunk a foot.

Can you not sue the developers for damage to your property?

During the first COVID lockdown I was in bed and the windows were open. I saw the lights of an ambulance and then after a while, a lot of screaming and people shouting 'No.' Then some of the family were outside smoking waiting for a private ambulance.

Coming home to a strange noise open the back door to the full force of DDog screaming because he'd broken his back (freak accident) Truly scarred me. Thankfully he's a tough little boot and survived the spinal surgery and is still keeping on 5 years later.

XenoBitch · 21/10/2024 23:44

Actually, I just remembered another one.
I have no interest in the Air Tattoo event things, but there was one not that far from me. During that weekend, the Red Arrows were scheduled to go right over my town. I did not know this.
I was having an early afternoon snooze and was awoken by what I thought were bomber jets letting loose on my neighbourhood. I genuinely thought we were being bombed. It wasn't until heard kids in the street 'oohing' over it all, that I calmed down a bit.

Idontlikeyou · 21/10/2024 23:45

Weaning calves/cows (can hear them at moment), it’s a sad sound. Ditto the sheep/lambs in Summer.

Toseland · 21/10/2024 23:46

Coming home and opening the front door to the sound of a waterfall. The kitchen was a small lake.

GreengrassofW · 21/10/2024 23:51

Sand paper exploding as i sanded the floor today (belt sander)

It's a toss up between my alarm on a morning and DD9's auditory reaction to finding a spider. This means it's over to me to remove the bloody thing and I'm more scared than she is

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/10/2024 00:01

Concorde taking off. I grew up on the housing estate next to where it was built and tested. It was the only plane, apart from the Red Arrows fleet, that would make the windows rattle. There were a lot of windows. It was a 60s house. It also looked like it was taking off at the end of the road due to the way our house faced in relation to the runway.

My cat, the first time she started making her new wailing sounds. I've always had cats but never heard anything like it! It is horrendous and everyone comments!

4am, and suddenly woken by DH leaning over me, hand over my fucking mouth, brandishing his cane at the door.

"Listen."

She was two floors below and it sounded like some kind of fucking demon! And we're not woo. 🤣 He hobbles down a flight of stairs expecting to see the girl from The Ring, me behind him with a bloody bit of wood, and next minute this fat old ginger cat appears and wails. Could have murdered her if she wasn't so cute!

Thepossibility · 22/10/2024 05:01

DH with a vomiting bug last weekend. He scream sneezes and scream coughs and scream vomits. My son was sobbing in terror at the sound of it.

XChrome · 22/10/2024 05:05

The miserable sound of my ex husband's voice when he comes to pick up my daughter.

Shhhthedogssleeping · 22/10/2024 06:07

I was woken at 6am by beautiful singing from a male voice choir. I thought I was hallucinating. I asked DH later on... he hadn't heard as he was asleep.

That reminded me of my DM telling me that after she had her appendix out when she was 9, she was half sleep after being brought back to the ward, and heard ‘angels’ singing. She thought she was dead and was up in heaven bless her. It was nuns ( Catholic hospital) walking round the wards singing.

Kittensat36 · 22/10/2024 06:10

My rule of thumb when I hear the cats freaking out in the night followed by a crash is: "can I smell burning? No? I'll deal with it in the morning then."

The worst sound though was the sound of the key being slipped in the front door lock at one in the morning while I was home alone while my parents were away. My Dad had left the front door open a couple of days earlier and someone had taken my DSis's keys from the hall table. The next sound heard was a large woman hitting the back of the door like a rugby player.

The sirens the night of 13th novembre 2015. And then the ambulances lined up in my street.

I can't imagine how awful that must have been x

This is quite insensitive. There are plenty of other posts describing upsetting situations, and you come across as if you think your discomfort matters more than @Pinkypup sharing what she heard.

Also, your username could be considered quite triggering to some.

You can't leave us hanging like this!! What happened next?!?!

NOTANUM · 22/10/2024 23:55

Sonic boom from a military plane that woke the south east of England up about 5 years ago!
