A loud bang looked at and the house across was on fire.

DH farting in bed.

I once nearly called the police because I could hear a baby screaming and it sounded hurt.

It was a fox in heat. If you haven't heard it before, it freaky as hell.

I heard what I think was a pair of foxes mating outside when I was on a night shift, once. The nurse on duty and I also wondered about calling the police but we couldn’t see anyone being hurt outside when we looked out of the windows and we weren’t allowed to leave the premises at night, so couldn’t investigate.
I tried to pick my mum’s little rescue dog up once when she wasn’t expecting it (bad idea to begin with, but she screamed so loud it scared the crap out of me!).
Last one I can think of, off hand, was during high winds and some of the roof tiles got torn off and smashed on the ground.

vitahelp · 21/10/2024 22:33

Foxes screeching in the night. I was certain once it was a woman screaming outside the house!

Elzzup · 21/10/2024 22:34

A rabbit screaming that the cat brought in.
Barn owls sitting above my window (they don't make the lovely owl sound you would like to think all owls make- it's awful)

As per a previous poster we can hear peacocks in our garden and they tend to get quite noisy at dusk and it is an incredibly eery sound although I quite like it now

TheWholeShackShimmies · 21/10/2024 22:35

Similar to you op. Sitting in the lounge one evening watching TV and there was an almighty loud bang then it was really bright through the curtains and suddenly realised next door but ones garage was alight.

We also live next to a main road and sadly have seen too many motorbike and car accidents, the noise is unmistakable we know in an instant what has happened. Last one was a man coming off his quad bike, it was not a pretty sight.

Please tell me you are joking

No, absolutely not joking.

It sounds like either a baby or a woman in serious trouble.

I know it sounds implausible but that's exactly what it sounds like.

Frith2013 · 21/10/2024 22:37

A car being shunted into the end of our row of tiny cottages. One death.

My dad humming to himself when he came to help me when my son was very ill. Humming up the stairs, obviously trying to look calm. When he saw my son and stopped humming. (He had sepsis).

We live semi rural and I can confirm that foxes make the most awful noises, I'm regularly woken through the night in the summer when the windows are open.

Agree. When I first moved to this house I thought a woman was being attacked. Nope, just a fox. Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Dotto · 21/10/2024 22:39

In lock down, outside in the garden in the sunshine, suddenly and randomly, it seemed like all the neighbourhood children were outside all at the same time and the combined panoramic sounds of their laughing / screaming / crying felt so loud and intrusive, swirling around my head it made me want to scream myself. I went inside and started looking at Rightmove. Bought noise-cancelling headphones instead, in the end.

The noise that came from my throat when I answered the phone to my brother early one morning and he said "it's Dad" I know exactly what keening sounds like now... it's such a devastating sound
I miss my dad so very much I was always a daddy's girl and the loss of him 13 years ago still hurts

I’m sorry, that sounds really tough Flowers

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/10/2024 22:40

The kitten screeching her head off right now because she wants to go in DD’s room and DD is fast asleep
closely followed by DD when an earring got stuck in her ear and I was trying to get it out. I was surprised no one called the police. We had to go to a tattoo parlour in the end
followed by me when an earring was stuck in my ear.

Hurricane of 1987. The wind was screaming, it was utterly terrifying.

Totally agree, the sound of part of our roof being ripped off was tremendous! I was 8 months pregnant, my daughter was 13 months old with tonsillitis and my 3 year old son slept through! My husband was working in Scotland that week and my lovely next door neighbour came round to sit with me until it got light. The garden was full of broken tiles and pieces of wood from the trees but no one was hurt.

Frith2013 · 21/10/2024 22:42

Also a storm c2002 where the wind somehow got in the roof of our cottage and the gutters thrummed, the whole house vibrated and it made the loft hatch lift up and down! Lasted about 30 seconds and it was dreadful.

Errolwasahero · 21/10/2024 22:52

@Ratfinkstinkypink I’m so sorry. Please find a way to forgive yourself. I’m sure he would if he could.

PollyValente · 21/10/2024 22:53

The sirens the night of 13th novembre 2015. And then the ambulances lined up in my street.

XenoBitch · 21/10/2024 22:59

I love foxes but my god, the noises they make! Sends chills down my spine.

The worst sound I heard was in the middle of the night. It was a 'ppfffftTHPTHPTHP' noise from my elderly cat's arse. Explosive diarrhoea and I ended up standing in it barefoot too.

TheVeryAngryCaterpillar · 21/10/2024 22:59

I once woke with a start in the middle of the night to the sound of all the little bottles on my dressing table rattling and clinking against each other. This was nothing new, as we lived next to a railway line and freight trains often rumbled through in the early hours and made the house shake.

This time though, it was different, and it took me a while to realise why I felt such deep, primal unease.

Then I realised that everything else was silent. There was no freight train.

I proper shit myself and had to sleep with the light on the rest of the night. (Until the morning, when I saw the news about an earthquake in the Midlands and not, you know, a ghost train!)

A barn owl is responsible for knocking at least a year off my lifespan. I was home alone in those carefree times before kids. Had treated myself to pizza and a horror film (DH not keen so I used to do it when he was away). Went to bed mildly jittery....and then heard, through the partly open bedroom window, an unearthly grating screech like a demon summoned from the nethermost pit. With shaking hands I parted the curtains, only to see the wretched owl perched on the conservatory roof below the window. Feathery twat.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 21/10/2024 23:12

Foxes. I thought a dog was being beaten to death outside my house at about 3am, and like a total weirdo I threw my dressing gown on and ran outside to help said dog.

I was relieved when I noticed the fox, further ahead, running up our street.

TickingAlongNicely · 21/10/2024 23:15

This was actually a pleasant sound. But freaky.

I was woken at 6am by beautiful singing from a male voice choir. I thought I was hallucinating. I asked DH later on... he hadn't heard as he was asleep.

A week later... the same thing. I was getting a bit concerned now...

A few days later, I found out the cause. A bizarre tradition where the the local craftsmen went around the town before dawn in December to serenade the residents.

StrongbutTired00 · 21/10/2024 23:17

Home alone as a teen and taking a bath. I heard claws scratching on the landing carpet directly outside the bathroom door and a loud screech like from a cat. We had no pets. I got out the bath and looked in every room, no cat anywhere in the house and all windows and doors were closed. I still have no idea what this could have been.

SingingSands · 21/10/2024 23:17

Would have to be the flapping of a wood pigeon which had fallen down the chimney and was stuck in the living room chimney (which was capped off). Only happened once in 21 years though! And we did manage to rescue it!

ForGreyKoala · 21/10/2024 23:18

A big earthquake. The noise was terrifying.
