Ever rewatched a series and realised you dislike a character?

Maybe a character you liked originally or were indifferent to? I'm rewatching Dexter and, omfg, Debra is so damn annoying and pathetic, not to mention bad at her job!

Yes to Tom in Desperate Housewives! I recently re-watched it all and he put Lynette through so much! The last season when he left her and was seeing another woman who he allowed to go to penny's birthday party and bring a photographer 🤦🏼‍♀️ Do love the scene though where Lynette photo bombs every picture to spoil them 😆

I thought and still think she is amazing, shows how different we all are 😂
I used to love Walter White but with every watch I hate him more.

Also Billy in Ally Mcbeal! Ally was just a quirky loopy character but Billy was awful watching it back! He treated Georgia badly and turned into an arse when they divorced. And to think at the time I was really sad when he died!

Lorelei in Gilmoe girls - loved it/her when I first watched it.
Horrendous when I started watching with my teenage daughter.

Many of the above, especially Carrie from SATC and Ross from Friends. Also Ally McBeal. She’s so self-involved and moany!

I recently re-watched Ally McBeal and discovered there wasn't a single character I liked or could relate to. Ally in particular is a whiny flake. And don't get me started on John Cage!

OilyTussle · 21/10/2024 13:41

Jim in the US Office. Constant low level bullying of Dwight, was a shit to Karen and Katie the bag girl, and manipulated Pam
(buying his parents house without telling her, the way he took off to his dream job).
Dwight on the other hand, was always loyal to his friends and genuinely cared (even if he was meant to be a bit weird)

Dontlletmedownbruce · 21/10/2024 13:43

I think I'm alone in this but I always disliked Rachel in friends. She was a type that I couldn't stand in real life, the girl that got by on her looks and expected adoration everywhere she went. Really shallow and spoilt and vain, even when she grew and became more confident and independent she was needy and self obsessed. I also couldn't look past the attitude of I'm too cool to learn to cook or clean up after myself and then she'd make fun of how useless she is, like everyone is supposed to forgive her incompetence because look how cute she is.

Also Julie from Desperate Housewives - she was just so SMUG

I loved Friends when I watched it in the 90s. I was about the same age as the characters are supposed to be, and in about the same stage in my life as they were (20something, just started work, living in a shared house with friends etc). At the time it seemed like Friends was almost aspirational- they were living a version of our lives but in a cooler city, with more excitement etc and they were better looking etc.

A few years ago it seemed to become popular again with teenagers and I rewatched some of it with DD. Even apart from the homophobia etc, on rewatching all the main characters are cliquey, judgmental and obnoxious. I was particularly struck by how unpleasant they are to people any of them dates outside their very tight group of friends.

We should have a thread on the opposite. There are tons of characters I hated on the first watch who I've warmed to as I've gotten older.

I have been on a couple of Jane Austin threads on here where we all agree that Mrs Bennett has been very hard done by. All she wanted was for her 5 daughters to marry so they would escape poverty, as they would inherit nothing and she is roundly mocked for it. Mr Bennett married her for her looks, then spends all his time putting her and his younger daughters down, while doing nothing to keep any of them from the workhouse when he dies.

peachescariad · 21/10/2024 14:26

Emily from Emily In Paris....second time round I just found her irritating and her constant false 'Yay!' boiled my piss! - Gabriel too 😆

evilharpy · 21/10/2024 14:31

Rayanne Graff's mother Amber in My So-Called Life. When I was 15 I thought she was the ideal parent - reading tarot cards, allowing her child to drink and have a house party. Rewatching years later I realised how completely dysfunctional their relationship is and that she is an utterly shit, neglectful parent who went on a date while her daughter was obviously ODing.

MrsKeats · 21/10/2024 16:16

Wow noah
People are weird.
I think Celia reminds me of my mum's friends.
Generous they are not.

I feel similarly about Mrs Joe in Great Expectations. At first sight she is nasty, naggy and shrewish to Joe and Pip. But when I re-read as an adult I felt a lot more sympathy for her. As a fairly young bride she was forced to become a "mother" to her husband's little brother. She had no children of her own and toiled away as a domestic drudge. I think I would have ended up bitter and nasty!

To cap it all off, the reader only finds out her actual first name, Georgiana Maria (I think) after she is dead and buried.

OnlyheretovoteonAIBU · 21/10/2024 16:53

Yes to Rachel Green. Shallow, vacuous and entitled.

Never could stand Bernadette from big bang theory, horrid character with he most irritating voice

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 21/10/2024 17:02

I never liked Logan in Gilmore Girls! Lorelai parentifies Rory, but Emily and Richard are awful and manipulative. (Currently watching with ds.. he prefers Jess to Dean.. especially after Dean cheats on his wife with Rory..)

AdviceNeeded2024 · 21/10/2024 17:18

Carrie Matheson from Homeland.

Season 1 and 2 is brilliant. First time round I was rooting for her and disliked Brody and wanted her to catch him and thought she was really determined and good at her job.

Second time round I cannot unsee her constant whining and trembling lips as she overreacts to everything, with the same watery wide-eyed startled expression on her face. Also, constantly making the most ridiculous decisions that would fuck everything up or at least get her fired.

I was really willing Brody to do anything to escape her clutches 😂😂

I also couldn’t stand his daughter Dana the second time round, found her really self centred and constantly complaining!!

Yes! She was a terrible actress too, only had one expression to everything; widening her eyes whilst frowning and moving her head to the side (if that makes sense). Telling her mum off/house burnt down/gets attacked and strangled/guy cheats with her friend/pregnant and gonna give up the baby for adoption; out comes the same expression!

Mapletreelane · 21/10/2024 18:55

I started to rewatch Ally McBeal but had to stop as she is so whiny, weak, self obsessed and indecisive. I used to want to be her and was genuinely upset I wasn't a lawyer in a trendy firm in Boston. But watching back her character is awful.

I started watching Gilmore Girls about 2 years ago with my daughter but couldn't as both Rory and Lorelei were so awful. Lorelei thinks she's so cool and witty bit she's just annoying.

And Friends...I know what people think but I re watched it with my 15 year old (she's very left leaning) recently and we both loved it!

I think it must be an American producers idea back then of putting a female character first! Shocking really!

One of the worst things about Carrie is that every episode she makes at least one week pun and her friends / latest shag fall about laughing and there are lots of references in the script to get being some great wit 🤦🏻‍♀️

I actually don’t mind Meredith. Yes, she can be a bit of a pain but she does care about her patients and being a good doctor. Also she has dealt with a lot before Grey’s even starts, what with never seeing her father, witnessing her mum’s suicide attempt at 5 and then dealing with Ellis being in a home for dementia when she was, what, 26?

Than allll the death. So much death.

After the The Sound of Silence episode I was rooting for Meredith. George on the other hand...

Carrie is apparently Sarah Jessica Parker’s self insert, hence why (particularly from series 2 onward when SJP got creative control) everyone on screen treats the character as being wonderful despite most viewers realising she’s actually awful.

In real life, Samantha and Miranda would either have never become friends with her or (if she wasn’t always so bad) dumped her a friend years ago. Doormat Charlotte might have lasted longer but IMHO, even she would have got tired of the constant mememememeeeee.

If it’s true SJP and Carrie do have a lot in common it makes you realise Kim Cattrell probably has a point.
