Ever rewatched a series and realised you dislike a character?

Maybe a character you liked originally or were indifferent to? I'm rewatching Dexter and, omfg, Debra is so damn annoying and pathetic, not to mention bad at her job!

Thing is, most of these are from a time when TV writers knew how to write realistic, interesting characters who were believably human, not ciphers mouthing fashionable moral platitudes. That's why many of these shows were and are beloved. That's why the 90s up to around 2015 or so was a golden age for TV, just tons and tons of amazing dramas and comedies with messy, fascinating, beautifully drawn characters. Tony Soprano is a racist, sexist thug who relentlessly cheats on his wife and oh, yes, murders people. He's also one of the best characters ever committed to the small screen. You might not want to be his friend or even meet him, but you want to watch him and you care what happens to him.

People have flaws. They don't always say or think the "right" things. They don't all agree with each other or have the same aims and motivations. Good writers know this and use it to construct compelling stories.

There would be no Breaking Bad if Walter White was a lovely guy. That show is literally about a seemingly normal guy gradually giving in to complete amorality because he likes how it feels, so it's funny people are here saying "Oh, he was horrid!"

If Ross was the perfect man, there'd have been no story after he and Rachel got together. If Lorelai Gilmore was never a bit selfish or impulsive, and if her parents were more emotionally open and empathetic, she wouldn't have left and cut off contact and there would have been no story. That IS the story.

Thank you for your sensible post. Honestly people, these are TV programmes, the writers realise the characters have flaws - because they are supposed to be flawed. I would be bored to tears watching programmes where everyone behaved perfectly.

I enjoy watching ‘The Nanny’ reruns but I feel I am not a huge fan of Niles. Years ago I thought the dynamic between him and CC was funny, but I think it isn’t so funny anymore. Maybe he would be seen as a workplace bully these days.

piscofrisco · 21/10/2024 06:42

I never much liked Carrie Bradshaw, but now I find the whole thing unwatchable.

Elena from The Vampire Diaries. She is so moany and does totally stupid things that put everyone else at risk, plus she is pretty awful for chucking Stefan and then going on to date his brother. I don't know what either Stefan or Damon saw in her tbh.

Joey in Friends - far worse than Ross IMO - I’ve just watched an episode where he says ‘take my date from last night for example, she was YUUCCCCKKKK…. but shhh, don’t wake her up, she’s in the next room’ - he’s utterly vile.

Obsessed with sex/porn/threesomes

Normalises sexual abuse, even when it’s happened to him:

  • Only got the part on Days because he agreed to sleep with the director (Harvey Weinstein vibes)
  • Went to Spring Break when he was 13 and had sex with a lot of ‘drunk college girls’
  • Creepy way he treated his roommate, smelling her clothes, sneaking around her bedroom (Elle Macpherson)
  • ‘Thats how they do pants!’ in reference to being groped by his tailor, who he has been seeing since age 12
  • ”Couldn't I just sleep with the director” during audition with Jeff Goldblum character

Currently rewatching it and am gobsmacked it’s still streamed without some scenes being removed.

Friends has aged terribly. I gave no idea why it has enduring popularity I can’t rewatch.

I'm watching it at the moment, seven days a week, and am loving it. Compared to the current crop of TV programmes it's a gem.

Amy in the West Wing. So very annoying.

värskekapsas · 21/10/2024 07:20

Ted in how i met your mother. He was so wrapped up with finding the one that he a bit delusional

Rene in Allo Allo.

I first watched it as a teenager, thought he was a worried, put-upon, hardworking, reluctant hero. Watched the series again years later and realised what a sleazy, self-centred, lazy coward he is!

I got that from watching as a child in the 80s. What surprised me when I rewatched a few episodes recently is I still.enjoyed it.

Edingril · 21/10/2024 07:23

Any of those crime dramas where the main character is over the top obsessed and way too intense, The Jetty was one recent example but there is lots more

Printedword · 20/10/2024 22:26

Surely the other 2 male characters are worse. Ross is kinda victim like

It was sweet when he bought Phoebe a bike. I think ge was insecure because Rachel was out his league looks wise.

I've very proud of my teenage self that I thought most of these were toxic at the time. I don't think I could watch Dawson Creek again incase Pacey lets me down. I did get a shock at my Greys rewatch to see George is such an asshole. I remember thinking Christina was amazing from the start, dh thought she was a wagon and didn't get my obsession. And on the rewatch he realised she was the best part of it.

Cristina is definitely the best character in Greys!
Derek is awful to Meredith.
George and Izzie are dreadful.
Callie and Mark are great!

I’m surprised so many have said Ross from Friends, I think Joey is much worse. He treated women so badly! I loved him when I watched as a teen and I do still love the show but he’s awful.

I agree with you about how Joey treats women but actually as a friend I would say he is the best one. I can't remember him ever doing anything bad to the others.

BonzoDogDooDahBand · 21/10/2024 07:47

Mildred from George and Mildred- what a nag! That said Yootha Joyce was a superb actress.

Elmo from Sesame Street. Annoying little red git.

Mac (Christopher Timothy) from Bbc Doctors. Arrogant, condescending . Loved Christopher Timothy as James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small, though.

Marsha in The Brady Bunch. Annoying.

Zac in Saved By The Bell. Loved Screech, but something about Zac ended up setting my teeth on edge.

Quagmire from Family Guy.

Randy Marsh from South Park. Gives me the ick for some reason!

Daisy and Makka Pakka from In the Night Garden.

CaptainCallisto · 21/10/2024 07:48

Phoebe in Charmed. As a teenager, when it first came out, she was my favourite, but rewatching as an adult (dug the boxset out after Shannen Doherty died) she's a petulant, whiny, narcissist who is insanely jealous of her sisters and makes ridiculous decisions that frequently put them all in danger because she thinks she knows better.

Sheldon in Big Bang Theory - what an utter knob - I don’t why everyone put up with his shit.

Loced big bang thoery to begin with, but it was Leonard that doesn't hold up for me. He got nastier and nastier as things went on. He knew who Sheldon was and constantly put him down for it. I stopped watching before it finished, but was actively sad when i heard that he and Penny got married as she definitely could have done better.

I later heard that it was mentioned in Young Sheldon that Sheldon and Amy had kids. I was genuinely angry about that. He would make a terrible father and there is no way he could have put the needs of children first. Amy (who I love) would have ended up having to do everything, despite being a brilliant scientist with a glittering career herself. It's possible I am overly invested in here though!

That's niche 😀

I'm guessing you're younger than me (50) as Home & Away was really popular when I was a teenager - definitely not niche 😁

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/10/2024 21:04

Yes.

Lorelei Gilmore!

She's not the cool mom

She's TERRIBLE

I've rewatched it enough to sympathise with Emily

She made me so uncomfortable with how inappropriate she was!

I liked Emily more than her husband.

BonzoDogDooDahBand · 21/10/2024 07:53

Jessica Wakefield from Sweet Valley High. I guess I'm thinking of the books more than the very short lived tv series. In the Twins series of books when they younger Jessica wasn't that bad, a bit of a materialistic snob but by the time the Twins reach high school she becomes an out and out bully, and seems determined to step on others to get what she wants. Mind you those books are problematic and haven't aged well at all! They were fun to read though!

I always disliked Pippa Fletcher. For some reason I never could put my finger on. She irritated the hell out of me.

I've just started binge-watching House from the beginning and I've realised how much I dislike Foreman. There are a lot of episodes so it's going to be interesting to see how the characters develop.

Okbyethen · 21/10/2024 07:55

Agree with others who have said Raymond from Everybody Loves Raymond. He is awful!!!

I didn't mind him when I first started watching years ago but my god he is insufferable! So lazy, whiny and pathetic I can't stand him!

Newsenmum · 21/10/2024 07:55

poorbuthappy · 20/10/2024 21:38

God yes. I watched 2 episodes this afternoon trying to get into it and she absolutely did my head in.

I remember when she woke Rory up on her birthday. Awful!

Rory became gradually obnoxious, I agree, with the peak being that last season they made a couple of years ago 😱 I put it to being raised by her mother, though 😆

I also hate Logan. But I think I’m still alone in that view.

Re: Sheldon, I couldn't see him as husband material for anyone to be honest! Love the character but imagine being married to someone like that in real life! Howard Wollowitz I now think looking back was really creepy. Ughh! Would make my skin crawl. And is that haircut meant to be Beatles or Star Wars?
