Ever rewatched a series and realised you dislike a character?

Maybe a character you liked originally or were indifferent to? I'm rewatching Dexter and, omfg, Debra is so damn annoying and pathetic, not to mention bad at her job!

OP posts:

Catherine Janeway and Chakotay. Worse than Neelix.

Stoneyellow · 21/10/2024 20:35

Jim and Pam in The Office, nasty bullies, just deeply unpleasant people.

FabulousPharmacyst · 21/10/2024 20:48

Ann Perkins! from Parks and Rec. no discernible personality beyond that which is mirrored from whichever guy she is dating.

Massive Buffy fan..but yeah, Xander seemed likeable and fun as a teen, but rewatching it’s cringe. Also Angel seemed mature and so romantic…now I think creepy, love bombing, going after a young woman who’s over a hundred years younger 🤢 If he looked his age, no-one would think it was romantic!
I think Spike is different. You’re meant to want them to get it on because of the chemistry but they were never meant to be together. He’s fundamentally flawed, even with his soul. I love that the end of Buffy is not about him ‘ending up’ with a guy, it’s just about her, contemplating her future. Riley - just ugh.

Yeah, but sexy David Boreanaz. Say no more. 😁😀

blessedarethequichemakers · 21/10/2024 21:49

House. I know you are meant to dislike him but be charmed by his genius but he's a sexist piece of shit and is enabled by everyone around him!

AdviceNeeded2024 · 21/10/2024 21:50

Speaking of Carrie from SATC who I also find to be an awful character, I did recently re-watch some episodes… anyone else noticed the HIDEOUS over the top high pitched squeal
she does whenever she’s surprised etc… like nails on a chalkboard!!

Didn’t he cheat on his wife and got accused of being pest on the set of Bones? Puts me off him a bit 😬

BonzoDogDooDahBand · 21/10/2024 22:00

Yes I couldn't stand Ally MacBeal's character either. She just annoyed me. Whiny, insecure, irritating. Bridget Jones on the other hand, also extremely neurotic and self obsessed like AM, was somehow much more relateable and funny.

Carrie in SATC is hideous years later

I actually think all the characters are! The whole programme appears so dated and cringe in the present day.

She was more whiney in the beginning and annoying, but that's when Big was being... Big. She was awful from the affair in season 3... but season 5 she was just annoying/sqealy/full of herself. I think SJPs ego was in full swing!

A cringing line though, I think maybe season 3 was when she met the guy in LA who said he was an agent, slept with him etc. Then when caught by the real owner of the house, Carrie Fisher (!) she said "oh I'm not a prostitute, I'm carrie Bradshaw!" Cue a puzzled look as if Carrie Fisher would know of a sex columnist for a minor newspaper from NY. Then Carrie was all "I'm Carrie, you're Carrie. You write, I write". Cringe as fuck!

It is! I’m also very ashamed to admit I got roped into watching the films… both bad but the second one… OMFG so cringeworthy and also perpetuates a lot of bad stereotypes….

This. No wonder Kim did a runner - frankly the fact she managed to portray on screen that Samantha liked Carrie is a tribute to her acting in light of SJP’s behaviour on and off camera. Some of the nude scenes SJP had Kim do were just deliberately degrading.

Apparently the whole set was like that - https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/sex-and-the-city-charlotte-kristin-davis-sarah-jessica-parker-b1977645.html

if anyone is interested.

I was Charlotte’s stand-in on SATC. Some of the behavior I saw still shocks me

They took Polaroids of me with my feet tied to the bed like it was a big joke. I wanted to flee. But I needed the paycheck. I needed the Screen Actors’ Guild healthcare

Thanks I’ll read this with interest. I’d heard they’d fallen out but not seen accounts from people on set.

I don’t think the stand in is blaming SJP but she was in charge. If people were being sexually harassed / abused on set she either knew and didn’t care or was just negligent.

I feel the same about the BBC and Jimmy Savile. Esther Rantzen admits she knew. You would think someone who cared about abused children would have done more to stop it . Or am I being unfair?

You should watch the video of Mark Kermode’s review of it, it’s hilarious.

HRTQueen · 21/10/2024 23:43

Carmela from The Sopranos, she was always annoying but it was unforgivable that she ignored Adriana’s murder as her project kept her busy

Carrie from SATC and I find Charlotte extremely annoying only character I really like is Samantha

Agree about Debs from Dexter and Walter White

Just watched it… “An orgy of dripping wealth that made me want to be sick” 😂😂 brilliant!

I hope I misunderstood somebody criticising Tony Soprano. The best ever TV character bar none. I was actually sad when James Gandolfini really died. That man was sex on wheels , and the best actor. 😞

Seinfeld is irreplaceable but there were a couple of wrong castings. Both of George's parents weren't great, though the father was worse than the mother ( yes I know it's Ben Stiller's dad. ). Susan was miscast totally. Just did not fit.

Worst was Frasier and "the Moon family". Shocking. the main one was Australian ( couldn't they find an Irishman?) and all the scenes particularly with Daphnes mother were awful. Was there a different writer? One of my favourite shows ruined!

Christmastinsel78 · 22/10/2024 05:13

Mandy Ellis in Seal Team. She gets on my nerves and I find her a pointless character.

ladyditaverner · 22/10/2024 06:14

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit after I wrote that I then thought actually, Mandy was worse!

I don’t think you’re being unfair. But for all we know she did speak out. But without solid evidence is unlikely to have gone anywhere.

SheilaFentiman · 22/10/2024 07:31

Re Esther Rantzen - many people knew something. The police investigated and dropped inquiries on two occasions. A couple of celebrities made on air allegations, which then were not aired. Saville took action against the Sun for libel in respect of some allegations about a children’s home in Jersey. Lynn Barber of The Independent asked him about allegations in 1990.

The chair of Children in Need refused to have Saville do anything with them - maybe that’s because he heard something “unproven” from Esther Rantzen and/or others.

It’s wrong to think that one more person raising concerns could have stopped him. Because some did, and he wasn’t stopped.

We should have a thread on the opposite. There are tons of characters I hated on the first watch who I've warmed to as I've gotten older.

Michael Scott from the (american) The Office anyone? 🤣
(That's what she said)
