Ever rewatched a series and realised you dislike a character?

Maybe a character you liked originally or were indifferent to? I'm rewatching Dexter and, omfg, Debra is so damn annoying and pathetic, not to mention bad at her job!

I’ve had the opposite experience. When I first watched Malcolm in the Middle when I was youngish and child free I thought the mum character was too shouty and stressed out to be a realistic character. Now I AM her! 😂

likeitallagain · 20/10/2024 23:20

Opposite - Just finished 'Joan' the series and realised I would probably run away with Boisie to Spain Blush He's gorgeous! But sadly the actor is only attractive, to me, playing that part. His google search pictures were a disappointment!

I didn't like Hermione in HP films. Stuck up her own arse and lots of performative nonsense going on

NoahsTortoise · 20/10/2024 23:24

Both Doug and Carrie in King of Queens.

She's just mean ans rude a lot of the time, and he's constantly trying to sabotage her career every time she tries to do better.

So many.
Lorelai obviously, but also Rory and Dean. Team Emily all the way.
Carrie is hideous.
Grace in Will and Grace.
Stacey in Gavin and Stacey.
Jonah and Amy in superstore.
Baxter on Downton.

I'm sure there are others.

I have always loved Baxter from Downton, so I would love to know more why you feel that way . Not a criticism at all, I love threads like this because I find them fascinating as to how we all see things so differently.

dayswithaY · 20/10/2024 23:36

Roland from Schitts Creek, I love that show but he’s a basic, annoying creep who ruins every scene he’s in.

Karen from Will & Grace is a nasty piece of work with no redeeming qualities and her voice just got squeakier every show.

Pam from Gavin and Stacey. She dismisses Stacey’s feelings, looks down on Nessa and walks all over Gwen, she also flirts with Smithy.

Olivia Pope from Scandal is a humourless bore with no people skills, what did Fitz and Jake see in her?

Stopped watching Gilmore Girls due to Lorelei.

BonzoDogDooDahBand · 20/10/2024 23:50

Kelly (Ruth Jones) from Fat Friends. I loved her sassiness and her bubbly persona (I get that It's probably bravado as one other character pointed out but I'm bigger than her at her biggest and I'm shy, so I admired it a bit albeit she v cheeky and a bit of a slag). Then as the seasons progressed I saw how she denigrated poor Kevin constantly. I thought after their wedding at the end of season one she would realise what a decent man her husband was, ok he isn't rich or handsome or slim, nor is he all that bright IMO, but he was decent, and if she didn't think he was good enough for her she should not have gone down that aisle to start with.

AngeloMysterioso · 20/10/2024 23:52

Sybil in Downton Abbey. Ugh god she’s just such a whiny twat, and what she puts poor Mrs Drew through is absolutely despicable.

whynotwhatknot · 20/10/2024 23:52

i never rally changed my opnion stacey from gav and, i thhink shes a whiny spoilt madam

Thing is, most of these are from a time when TV writers knew how to write realistic, interesting characters who were believably human, not ciphers mouthing fashionable moral platitudes. That's why many of these shows were and are beloved. That's why the 90s up to around 2015 or so was a golden age for TV, just tons and tons of amazing dramas and comedies with messy, fascinating, beautifully drawn characters. Tony Soprano is a racist, sexist thug who relentlessly cheats on his wife and oh, yes, murders people. He's also one of the best characters ever committed to the small screen. You might not want to be his friend or even meet him, but you want to watch him and you care what happens to him.

People have flaws. They don't always say or think the "right" things. They don't all agree with each other or have the same aims and motivations. Good writers know this and use it to construct compelling stories.

There would be no Breaking Bad if Walter White was a lovely guy. That show is literally about a seemingly normal guy gradually giving in to complete amorality because he likes how it feels, so it's funny people are here saying "Oh, he was horrid!"

If Ross was the perfect man, there'd have been no story after he and Rachel got together. If Lorelai Gilmore was never a bit selfish or impulsive, and if her parents were more emotionally open and empathetic, she wouldn't have left and cut off contact and there would have been no story. That IS the story.

Agree about needing complex characters to create dramatic tension BUT this thread is about characters that people thought were heroes the first time they watched the show. They didn’t think Ross was a whiny manipulative shit, or that Walter White was a nasty piece of work, or that Carrie Bradshaw was an almighty bitch with a horrible boyfriend. They are only seeing all that on rewatch.

And I’m not convinced that the writers of friends/SATC were deliberately writing shows about a group of deeply unlikeable people….The writers of the Sopranos and Breaking Bad obviously did know their main characters were villains.

Sybil in Downton Abbey. Ugh god she’s just such a whiny twat, and what she puts poor Mrs Drew through is absolutely despicable.

Wasn't that Edith? Sybil died before Edith had Marigold and the business with Drewes. That said although I never disliked Edith she was a flawed character. Not only did she put the Drewes through hell, but what about that first adoptive family in Switzerland? That whole thing was so badly handled. Poor Little Marigold....

Autumnlovelove · 20/10/2024 23:59

In a film - Dirty Dancing.

Im completely on the parents side now. Would never let my teenage innocent daughter go off 'dancing' with the 20 something year old dance teacher and his dodgy mates.

likeitallagain · 21/10/2024 00:01

I forgot Penny from Big Bang Theory. She was really nice to Sheldon in the first series and then turned against him, using sarcasm all the time when he didn't understand it, and belittling him

BonzoDogDooDahBand · 21/10/2024 00:07

The reverse here but in a film. The mother from Madame Doubtfire. Now I never disliked Robin Williams character and I still think the mum was wrong to deny him visitation (unless the father is at risk of harming his kids in some way or exposing them to harm/risk of harm I believe children have a right to see their parents if they wish) but as a child I was just like "urgh what a fun sponge" . Now I realise how infuriating Daniel's behaviour must have been at times, he was a nice person with a heart of gold, but oh, such a man child!

Raymond and Robert but particularly Raymond

Oh yes! Raymond is painted as a loveable buffoon but he's actually an annoying, whining, pathetic, mummy's boy manchild.

Ahhh, you’re right, I did mean Edith. I quite liked Sybil. Edith on the other hand has pretty much no redeeming qualities.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 21/10/2024 00:19

Gosh, I go do a few hours work and BOOM! 😂 Quite a few mentioned Riley from Buffy. Now I can't decide if to rewatch it or if to protect and cherish the memory. Maybe some things are not meant to be rewatched.

Another vote for Rory Gilmore! I never did like Lorelei. Derek and Arizona from Greys, but on the flip side I liked April a lot more on the rewatch

Agree- love April

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/10/2024 21:04

Yes.

Lorelei Gilmore!

She's not the cool mom

She's TERRIBLE

I've rewatched it enough to sympathise with Emily

Also Rory Gilmore.

I admired Edith after her jilting when she picked herself up off the ground and turned her life around, so to speak (the Dowager's advice for her to "stop whining and find something to do" was the making of her. But yeah. The self pity at times was very tiresome (trying to remind myself that Patrick dying and the fact that if Patrick had lived he was promised to Mary (who hated that and it would have been a horrid marriage no doubt but that's another thread, I'm sure), Anthony Strallen dumping her at the alter and Michael dying would have pushed an reasonable woman over the edge, but yeah). I am glad Edith got her happy ending finally, Bertie being such a gem , but on the whole I preferred Mary, even with her own quite horrendous flaws. I admired her spirit . I like a feisty difficult character. Loved the fact that in some ways she is
Like an upstairs parallel to Thomas Barrow character wise (the Orange scene with George at the end of series 6 was done so beautifully).

I'll have to rewatch it. I remember losing all sympathy with him in that scene (trying not to do a spoiler) with Jesse's girlfriend when he is by her bedside. But I'd love to see it again, knowing what happens, to spot how awful he is from the start.

DP had conveniently forgotten the scene where Walt tries to rape his pregnant wife in the kitchen.

We get it, he’s going through some stuff, but even before he becomes Heisenberg he’s an arsehole.

neepsa · 21/10/2024 02:23

Joey in Friends - far worse than Ross IMO - I’ve just watched an episode where he says ‘take my date from last night for example, she was YUUCCCCKKKK…. but shhh, don’t wake her up, she’s in the next room’ - he’s utterly vile.

Obsessed with sex/porn/threesomes

Normalises sexual abuse, even when it’s happened to him:

  • Only got the part on Days because he agreed to sleep with the director (Harvey Weinstein vibes)
  • Went to Spring Break when he was 13 and had sex with a lot of ‘drunk college girls’
  • Creepy way he treated his roommate, smelling her clothes, sneaking around her bedroom (Elle Macpherson)
  • ‘Thats how they do pants!’ in reference to being groped by his tailor, who he has been seeing since age 12
  • ”Couldn't I just sleep with the director” during audition with Jeff Goldblum character

Currently rewatching it and am gobsmacked it’s still streamed without some scenes being removed.

HelterSkelter224 · 21/10/2024 03:01

Both of the Gilmore girls, and Pam and Jim from the US office - smug fuckers, and bullies to boot.

I cant bear Meredith in Greys.

Nor me!

Why are there so many of these whiny self-involved women playing leads in US tv series?
