Ever rewatched a series and realised you dislike a character?

Maybe a character you liked originally or were indifferent to? I'm rewatching Dexter and, omfg, Debra is so damn annoying and pathetic, not to mention bad at her job!

Carrie in SATC is hideous years later

Just what I was going to say

Original or replacement Pippa. Pippa the second annoyed me!

Original. I loved her and thought she was warm and motherly when first watched it as a child. But as an adult, I realised she was quite rude to people, and her parenting wasn't great at times.

ZwarteZwaan · 20/10/2024 21:44

Gillian in Last Tango in Halifax. She’s annoying as hell.

Totally.

There's a point where you realise "Shit! He was evil from episode 1"

I'll have to rewatch it. I remember losing all sympathy with him in that scene (trying not to do a spoiler) with Jesse's girlfriend when he is by her bedside. But I'd love to see it again, knowing what happens, to spot how awful he is from the start.

Pippa Fletcher in Home & Away.

There’s an Instagram account called “Early Years Home and Away” that features a video of Ben Lucini (Julian McMahon’s character and Pippa’s son-in-law). It’s called “Unintentional Villain?” He was portrayed at the time as a bit pig-headed, but basically decent and hardworking. Carly (his wife) was portrayed as a silly young girl who needed to grow up, realise she was married now and listen to the good sense her husband was talking. Yet when you watch the video, he comes across as really controlling and gaslighting; you see Carly trying to explain, but being dismissed.

Not a specific character, but I recently rewatched Cutting It on iplayer and....good grief!

It's ridiculously messed up, a huge amount of unhealthy relationships/just plain old shagging - I was shocked!

Watched it when I was much younger so think a lot of it went over my head the first time.

Have you ever seen Age Before Beauty by the same writer (Debbie Horsfield)? Made about 10 - 15 years later, the plot and setting are incredibly similar - only it’s nowhere near as good. I wonder if I’d find Cutting It had aged poorly if I watched it again.

FionnulaTheCooler · 20/10/2024 21:59

JD in Scrubs. He is a whiny, ridiculous man child. If I was Dr Cox I would have snapped and strangled him after 8 years of the puppy dog eyes and constant need for validation.

Greys. Started it again last year and they’re nearly all fucking awful. I always thought Meredith and Derek were a gorgeous lovely couple in a beautiful romantic relationship but they’re monstrous. He’s a shit.

Yes!!! Derek is an arse and Meredith is a self obsessed whinge bag! Alex though is actually (mostly) quite lovely even though he’s portrayed as “evil spawn and we’re all supposed to hate him in the early seasons.

So many characters I love(d) have been mentioned on this thread. I need to make a list of shows not to rewatch! 😂

ColdinNovember · 20/10/2024 22:04

@BeMintBee I thought we were supposed to think that about Piper. She was kind of there to act as a foil against the other characters, a middle class, white woman who got pretty lightly for her crime compared to others (e.g Poussay )for her crime but still feels she’s the victim of it all. I don’t think I’ll be able to rewatch OINTNB especially the last season heartbreaking.

custardcreamsies · 20/10/2024 22:06

Derek Shepherd. DM rewatched greys all the time and I have to leave her house as soon as she puts it on, he really really rubs me the wrong way.

Shodan · 20/10/2024 22:08

Definitely agree with Lorelei (spoilt brat) and Carrie (vacuous).

And Melinda's son in series 5 of Ghost Whisperer. I don't watch series 5 if I ever rewatch it.

Currently rewatching Call the Midwife and don't find any characters too annoying, but something is bugging me: there's a couple of episodes in about series 5 or 6 where there's SO MUCH BLUE!! The walls are blue. Nearly all the women are wearing blue dresses (apart from the midwives, obviously, whose uniforms are always blue). Curtains are blue. Cushions are blue. WHY???

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 20/10/2024 22:11

@SpiggingBelgium I've just had a google and it's ringing a bell - there was actually a part I was waiting for in Cutting it that didn't happen, I wonder if it happens in age before beauty and I've misremembered??
Will have to watch!

MsNeis · 20/10/2024 22:16

MonCoeur · 20/10/2024 21:26

Rory is even worse, but actually I’m not entirely sure I ever liked her in the first place!

Rory became gradually obnoxious, I agree, with the peak being that last season they made a couple of years ago 😱 I put it to being raised by her mother, though 😆

Tinkerbellflowers · 20/10/2024 22:16

@SpiggingBelgium Absolutely. I have noticed so much wrong with 80s/90s Home & Away watching it through the eyes of an adult now in 2024.

TennisWithDeborah · 20/10/2024 22:18

The Duckworths in Classic Corrie. Good acting and chemistry but a toxic couple, with Jack having very little respect for his wife. He’s idle, he wastes money, and he has been unfaithful. And he makes unkind public jokes about her appearance and sex appeal despite being an overweight slob in a grubby vest.

catin8oots · 20/10/2024 22:18

Tinkerbellflowers · 20/10/2024 21:35

Pippa Fletcher in Home & Away.

That's niche 😀

Goryrilmore · 20/10/2024 22:19

Agree with Walt from breaking bad. Another one that comes to mind, I’m not sure if anyone here has seen it as I’ve never heard anyone in real life talk about it, but Californication. I watched it for a third time last year and really couldn’t stand Karen. I couldn’t believer that I ever watched it and liked her in the past

MsNeis · 20/10/2024 22:21

Really?? I won't rewatch it, then 🤫

PurpleFlower1983 · 20/10/2024 22:21

MonCoeur · 20/10/2024 21:23

I still love him, but rewatching The X-Files over the years, I’ve come to realise that Mulder is a maniac - there’s even a podcast called Mulder is a Maniac!

@MonCoeur I agree with you! And he’s awful to Scully at times! Shouting her down or dumping her without a word! Still love him but still! She deserved a medal!

WateryBottle · 20/10/2024 22:22

A film rather than a series, but Elsa in Frozen is a complete bitch

Autumnweddingguest · 20/10/2024 22:24

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 20/10/2024 21:31

Many of the above, especially Carrie from SATC and Ross from Friends. Also Ally McBeal. She’s so self-involved and moany!

I always hated Carrie and Allie McBeal. Awful self-absorbed vacuous characters that made professional women out to be so shallow and vain.

littlefireseverywhere · 20/10/2024 22:24

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/10/2024 21:04

Yes.

Lorelei Gilmore!

She's not the cool mom

She's TERRIBLE

I've rewatched it enough to sympathise with Emily

I’m with you on this. I’m totally on Emily‘s side now

Printedword · 20/10/2024 22:26

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 20/10/2024 21:07

Ross from Friends. He is a walking red flag of a man. I’ve told the kids he is practically a what not to do manual for dating so pay attention and don’t do anything he does.

Surely the other 2 male characters are worse. Ross is kinda victim like

Im rewatching ghost whisperer, I think I’m on series 2 or 3.

I didn’t notice the first time around but she spends most of it not wearing a bra with her large breasts in very low cut outfits with thin straps, even at events like funerals where it’s noticeable in comparison to every other person who has dressed more conservatively.
I actually like a lot of her characters clothes except that particular element.

I’m not a judgmental person generally and I didn’t notice it the first time around but I spend a big chunk of time watching her thinking put a bra on, that dress/top really would look better if you were more supported or at least put a cardi over that!

I feel bad even thinking it but it really is so noticeable and distracting when everyone else around her are dressed normally.

unstableunicorn · 20/10/2024 22:30

Another vote for Rory Gilmore! I never did like Lorelei. Derek and Arizona from Greys, but on the flip side I liked April a lot more on the rewatch
