Storm Ashley. Where is she?

We’re west coast of Scotland so very exposed.
Husband planned to make a trip to B&Q to collect supplies for current building work. I talked him out of it as didn’t think it wise to drive with items on roof of car during a storm. Forecast predicted wind gusts of 40mph from 4am.

I’ve been awake on and off since then and so far, no gusts!

Husband now making frantic dash to B&Q!

Has the wind picked up for anyone else yet?

Wild here in NI through the early hours. I was awake from about 3am onwards. (We live right by the sea) It’s definitely died down a fair bit now. Haven’t looked out toward the beach yet so don’t know what state it’s in, nor how high the waves still are, but they are quieter than they were earlier. Some localised flooding out the other side of the house, and from what Twitter says there is flooding elsewhere too

maldivemoment · 20/10/2024 09:10

@FerminRomeroDeTorres glad it’s died down for you. I’m aware of the seriousness of the situation & hope my post didn’t come across as too petty.

We also live right by the sea and are hoping it’s not too terrible when it hits. Everything crossed…

Not at all @maldivemoment! We have had plenty of times when a predicted storm hasn’t come to much and it’s bizarre - esp when you are prepared. I’m surprised it’s died down here as much as it has - weather warning for wind continues into tomorrow morning, and it’s ok right now. Hoping for a lot less disruption than anticipated.

LuckysDadsHat · 20/10/2024 09:16

According to the weather forecast this morning it won't hit till mid afternoon.

maldivemoment · 20/10/2024 09:17

@GrandesRandonnees
I had no idea such a thing existed! Very cool. Thank you

@LuckysDadsHat indeed. When we went to bed last night the forecast was for the wind to ramp up from 4am onwards. Even at 4am that was still the forecast.

Tis actually weirdly quiet here. The literal ‘calm before the storm’ I guess.

The windy app is quite good for tracking winds.

WhoStoleMySpoons · 20/10/2024 09:27

Pretty windy here I am in Scotland, noisy but not too bad yet. I've just been out and put the wheely bins in the garage because the Met Office forecast is predicting gusts of up to 69mph this evening.

notimagain · 20/10/2024 09:27

If it’s any help the weather forecast for Shannon airport has the winds starting to pick up from about 1000 hrs BST onwards, building up to really windy lunchtime/early PM.

FWIW it’s supposed to be a southerly there ATM, just under 25 MPH.

Anybody out there confirm.

Great isn’t it, you can also look at things like wave height, sea surface temperature etc. A weather geek’s paradise!

That certainly appears to be the case for places like Prestwick…according to the forecast it could be a fairly wild there at times late PM> evening.

Still out in the Atlantic at the moment: https://earth.nullschool.net/

Wow!
That together with the met office map animation gives a pretty good idea of what's going on and how it will probably develop. It's quite windy in Lancashire but we're pretty well tucked in behind Ireland really.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/10/2024 09:45

Outside my house in Somerset. It's mental at the moment. My apple tree is almost bent over. I didn't think it was affecting us.

FYI wind recorded at about 35 mph at RNAS Yeovilton about half an hour ago….can’t help with a forecast, sorry.

101Kittens · 20/10/2024 09:51

You must be on the inner bit of the coast, it's throwing bins around the street on the sticky out bit 😂 The ferries aren't sailing, it's 💨💨

MeMyCatsAndI · 20/10/2024 10:12

I've got it here in north east. 50mph gusts and going up. It's pouring. The house is creaking.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/10/2024 10:13

She's definitely arrived in W Yorks!

flapjackfairy · 20/10/2024 10:15

it is raging outside my window here in the midlands!

notimagain · 20/10/2024 10:29

FWIW looking at the forecast charts and some of the pressures being reported right now (1030 UK time) the actual centre of the low pressure system i.e. the storm itself, is still sat off the west coast of Scotland, that’s why locations such as Prestwick are forecast to get clobbered by the storm itself later today.

Places like Birmingham and the south of England are not going to be hit by the centre of the storm, but they are right now suffering effects of a frontal system, wrapped around the low and slightly leading it, that is sweeping across central England about now

DeathWinsAGolfish · 20/10/2024 10:42

@GrandesRandonnees thank you what a fantastic link!

DoublePeonies · 20/10/2024 10:47

Picking up here!

hopeishere · 20/10/2024 11:05

Calm and sunny in Belfast! It was windy during the night but it died down.

Beaverbridge · 20/10/2024 11:10

All calm in Central Scotland so far!.

I’d still keep hatches battened down.

If the airport forecast (which is now about 6 hours old so may change) is still correct you could well get whacked again this PM/early evening with some heavy showers and winds associated with those up to 50-60 MPH.
